What Can I Be?What am I supposed to be?Mamma told me, be a lady.Daddy told me, use your manners.Sister told me, you can’t change the worldbut if you try you’ll be a sweet little girl.Brother told me, take off that superhero costume, there’s already enough muscle without you.Grandma told me you don’t have to be good at math, that’s for men.I shouldn’t be a hero.

What do I want to be?A woman of power and grace.A woman of smarts and dignity.I want to fly and be free.I shouldn’t want to wear high heels and lipstick.I want to be strong and brave.I want to be a hero.

What Can I Be?I can be good at math.Who needs boys to like me?I can like myself.I can keep my high heels.I can keep my lipstick.I can hold my head up and fly.I can save the innocent and wear a dress.I can be a hero.

What am I?A rebel. But I am brave.I am my own girl.I am strong.I am a hero in high heels. By Mia Shenkman

SHADOWSFluttering 'round, my shadows go,

laloping silently, to and fro.Hoping they're friendly, tho'

scared of their powerto vanish sweet joys as

found in each hour.

Passive too long,I've allowed them to grow

from little chimeras refusing to go.Now I must face them

regardless of painfor brighter tomorrows

and loving, again.

A MotleWhen in the southern sun of boyhoodI caught lightly in my fingersA butterfly black and dappled; With fascination, infatuation, I pulledApart each velvet segmentTo find its mystery.Tearfully I found in the tearingThe secret had flutteredAnd gone.I later learned to share their sun,And the mystery was mine.

When We Walk at Night between Nickelodeon DaysWhen we walk at night towardsOur old countryhouse its saffron lampsSeem to inhale, exhale softlyThe sweet ether.Pliable leaves underfoot addA distance to the day’sRinky dink patterns. Now, at last, we can let go!The world won’t rollaway andRun bumpity, bump, crashInto a hedgerow.Tonight…Stars in the oaks, breeze through the pines,The chiffon presence of shad bush and quince,Breathe in…slowly…Breathe out.Yes, we’ll have to put another nickel in,But that’s tomorrow. I Wonder I am a girl-child.Possibilities were tuckedInto the pink folds of my blanketIn the hospital nursery,And woven into my lullabies.Under loving eyes, I grew. Now, I watch everything:Grandma in high heeled sandalsMother in yoga pantsAuntie in business suits. But, it is the super-heroes who mesmerize me.Their costumes seem to transform themFrom ordinary mortals into wonderous beingsAble to do incredible things.I wear WonderWoman’s color-coded outfitHoping its lively symbols speak for meAs I play at being who I’m not,In a suit that I’m outgrowing. Somehow, I know that what I now wearDoes not define me.I wonder who I really am? Where I’m going? And what shall I wear?
