Editors Notes
We’ve gone back to our roots. The
magazine is once again focusing on
Artistes, more so than anything else.
However other that doesn’t mean
we’ve written off other sections. In the
coming week’s you will see a greater
expansion of these sections on the
website.
We are excited to be featuring Jackie
Jones this week. We speak exclusively
about her book series the Wardens, as
well as take a look Return of the
Guardian Trilogy.
As a photographer, I’m also giving a
few tips on how to hire a
photographer. A lot of artistes
collaborate with photographers on
projects and these tips should give a
good idea of what to ask for.
Tobenna’s Recipe Book is again here
this week. Don’t forget to check the
site for the full thing.
As always, I want to say thank you to
our loyal fans for continuously reading
the magazine, and supporting us with
your words of encouragement.

PASTA WITH TOMATO BROCCOLI AND MUSHROOM
SAUCE - 4 servings, 294 caloriess per portion.
Before beginning this recipe I'd like to state that according to the
Food Guide Pyramid 1 serving of pasta = 1/2 cup of it, cooked.
However this serving size is very small so i'll do it as 1 cup = 1 serving
and calculate the calories accordingly. Photo credited to: www.blogspot.com
RICOTTA AND QUINOA STUFFED BAKED TOMATOES - 4
servings, 150 cals per serving
I can always recollect of my mum bringing home very nice and fresh
locally grown tomatoes, and that variety can be used very well for this
recipe. Also the quinoa can be sourced from any supermarket and is a
healthy food which I encourage you to experiment with. photo credit to:

Six (6) Things to Keep in Mind
When Hiring a Photographer – By

Recently, I had a consultation with a potential
client who requested the name of the camera
kit I was shooting with. Honestly, this is
something that baffles me. Why are people,
clients and photographers alike, more
interested in what camera a person is shooting
with? Wouldn’t seeing a portfolio with
samples of work be better?
A lot of people seem to think that a better
camera means better photos. That’s a huge
misconception. I’ve seen great shots come out
of disposable cameras and I’ve seen some
horrible photos being produced by people
with thousands of dollars in photography
equipment.
There are a lot more important things you
need to know about than how many mega
pixels (s)he shoots with. Here is a list of the
six (6) things you should look for when
choosing a photographer, regardless of
whether you are hiring them for your wedding
or if you need just a few headshots for that
job application letter.
1. Price – Is the photographer in your
price range? There are many
photographers at varying prices. No
photographer likes when you try to
make them cut their prices to suit you
and many of them will turn the job
down. It’s very impolite.
Instead, you should shop around the
same way you would for a car or
house until you find a few that fit into
your price range.
2. Ask to See Their Portfolio
This is even more important than
price in some, if not all cases. Just
because a photographer is more
WWW.ARTSTECHMAGAZINE.COM

age6
expensive, it doesn’t necessarily mean
his work is the best. Also just because
one is priced lower doesn’t mean the
work is bad. It really varies.
After you have found a photographer
or two that you can afford, ask to see
samples of their work. Not just from
one photo shoot. Ask for a variety.
You can’t really be upset after you
have had your shots taken and realize
this person isn’t that good if you
didn’t look at previous work
beforehand.
3. Ask for References - Yes, you should
always ask for references. There
should be at least two clients or
colleagues who are willing to vouch
for this photographer. This will help
you to get a better understanding of
whether the person is pleasant to
work with or not, and, if you can
depend on them.
4. Ask What the Concept Will be For
the Shoot
You may have an idea of what you
want your photos for and what you
want them to look like, but any good
photographer will be able to
conceptualize even further. You are a
tennis player, then how about a few
shots of you in a shirt and tie holding
a tennis racket? How about doing the
shoot on a tennis court?
Your photographer should always be
able to take your concept a step
further, or come up with one that’s
even better. It shows an artistic and
creative flair. You don’t need your
photos to look like everyone else’s.
5. Ask to See the Contract – A contract
is a vital piece of any agreement with a
photographer. It lets both parties
know what is expected of them and
what they are getting for their mutual
exchange. You pay me money and I
give you great photos.
It should also state what you are
allowed to do with the photos. In
most cases the photographers still
own the rights to the images. It is their
creative work after all. Some
photographers will not allow you to
WWW.ARTSTECHMAGAZINE.COM

age7
reproduce or copy the photos at all,
while others will allow you to once
you give credit and do not publish
without permission. It’s very
important to discuss Rights of Usage.
In some cases you should even ask a
lawyer to look over the contract just
to make sure it is fair.
6. Ask for Digital Copies
Sorry but in this era of smartphones
and social media, I'd much rather give
a client digital copies than prints. This
benefits both the photographer and
you, the client. It allows you to easily
share them with friends and family
online, as well as get them printed in a
variety of sizes. Just make sure you get
Hi Resolution images.
It would also be nice of you to ask for
a couple of copies with the
photographer's watermark or logo.
I’ve given discounts just for that. Most
photographers get work by referral. I
know I do. No marketing in the world
is better than someone recommending
you from personal experience. The
more people who see your work
online, the better it is for you.
These are only examples but they are all very
important. You may have a few more. Just
remember, a photographer is a professional.
Treat him/her with the same respect and
courtesy you would any other professional.
Not every photographer is the same so don’t
lump all in the same category. However, if you
can agree to everything beforehand, nine
times out of ten, you will end up with some of
the most amazing shots imaginable.
NB: Except where stated, all photographs are

Interview with Local Author Jackie Jones
By Shamar D.A. Prescod
Barbados has a long illustrious history of authors and creative thinkers. George Lamming, Austin Clarke and Frank Collymore are just a few names of internationally recognized writers. This week we are speaking with one of the newer generations of writers, Jackie Jones. She tells us a little bit about her Book Series, the Wardens and Secrets: Book 1 of the Return of the Guardian Trilogy, as well as what it was like writing them. What was your motivation to begin writing the series? For The Wardens Series: I kept hearing this thing in my head like a
silly little mantra ‘Erin and Zach are Sneaks’. Of course in the end they weren’t called Sneaks (thank goodness). I didn’t know exactly where the story was going to go, but I was sure that it’d be about partners hunting supernatural beings with twists that I hadn’t seen before in other books within the genre. Additionally, I really wanted to have the main characters (Erin & Zach) with roots mirroring my own –- Barbadian and British. For Secrets, (Return of the Guardian Trilogy, Book 1): This was my second attempt at YA fantasy and again I really wanted to create a universe using elements I hadn’t seen before in the genre. Thus the Tenari Fae were born and loads of other tidbits of the Fae world that make them rather different in comparison to others. Why an entire series, why not just one book? I have a thing for series and often my books end up being series or trilogies. I love to expand the lives of my characters and see what adventures they will have next. If I feel the story has been told within one book, so be it, as when I’m sure their stories have been properly and completely told, and then I stop. I admit that this is seldom the case *laughs*. How has the response been to the book so far, both locally and internationally? I have loyal local fans and a larger following and fan-base internationally, overall though, the response has been favourable. All the books in The Wardens series and Secrets have received 4 – 5 star reviews and high praise, so I feel very blessed with that. Of course though, I always welcome

new readers dipping their toes and eventually immersing themselves in my worlds. Did you have any doubts while writing the series? For The Wardens, no. It was one of those things that you are creating and you just kind of know ‘hey, this is it, these characters will be loved’. It’s not arrogance mind you; it’s just imagining readers digging in and their response. For Secrets, as it was my second attempt at YA, I was still a little nervous while writing. Additionally, I knew that Emma’s character early on – kind of dust couldn’t touch her if it tried – wouldn’t appeal to every reader, but the character presents in this way purposely and so I stuck with the decision to have her like this. So, that gave me a few nerves when I published, but a writer can’t let those things keep them from pressing on. What comes next for the characters? Is the story over or can we expect some surprises in the future? For The Wardens Series: Yes! Season 2 will be available soon. That’s 5 more episodes in this NA short story, Urban Fantasy/Paranormal series. There will definitely be more thrills and surprises and fans new and old will be able to journey with Erin and Zach on more supernaturally-charged and of course dangerous, expeditions! For Return of the Guardian Trilogy: Books 2 & 3 will be released in 2015 and with those released, readers can expect to be shocked by what unfolds. There will be more action, more adventure, more unbridled teen romance and the unveiling of many elements of the Fae world Ayestra that just might take their breath away.
