Nikola Tesla

Childhood

•  Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia Southeast, Europe in 1856.

•  As a little boy he became fascinated with electricity.

•  He would pet his cat, and watch as it would produce crackling sparks.

•  He had lots of time to think about electricity, because he was sick a lot and had to stay in bed.

Education •  He was a very good student, and when he

was 19 he left home to study engineering. •  One of his professors showed him an

invention that could be connected to an electrcal generator to act as a simple motor.

•  Tesla studied the motor and told his professor he could make it better. Tesla wanted it powered by alternating current, which is AC/DC.

Coming to New York •  At the time Tesla arrived in New York, Thomas

Edison was building generators and developing an electrical system.

•  Tesla met with Edison and told him about the AC system. Edison told Tesla he wasn't interested.

•  Tesla met with George Westinghouse who was very interested in his AC system.

•  Westinghouse and Tesla developed an AC system that lite up the 1893 Chicago World Fair. 3 years later an AC system began turning the energy of Nigara Falls into electrictiy.

Early Inventions •  Tesla didn't stop experimenting. •  In 1891 Tesla invented the Tesla Coil which

was used in radios and television sets. •  That same year he became a citizen of the

United States. •  He registered over 700 patents, including

flourescent lights, Laser beams, wirless communication, wireless transmtion of energy, remote control, robotics, Tesla turbins, and vertical take-off aircraft.

Later Years •  From 1901-1905 he was working on a project

with G.P Morgan to build a transmition tower of 187 ft tall.

•  It was intend to be able to transmit signals and power to any place in the world.

•  Before it was finished G.P Morgan withdrew the money and it was tore down in 1970 before it was operational.

•  After that Tesla's carrier began to decline. Even though he had alot of discoveries he lived the rest of his life in poverty. He died January 7, 1943 in a hotel in New York.

Inspiration •  Nikola Tesla had many inspirations, but his

main inspiration was his engineer teacher at Yale University.

Family •  Nikola Tesla had a 3 sisters, 1 brother, mom

and a dad. •  2 of his sisters and his brother didn't survive

they all died before they were born. •  They lived with his Aunt and Cousins. •  When he was little he only had 1 friend and

they grew up together, they would consider themselves brothers.

Honors and Awards

•  He recieved a Doctaral Degrees from Yale and Colombia University.

•  He was published in mayjor journals and at one point the New York Times thought that Tesla and Edison were to share Nobel Prize, however neither of them recieved the award.

Nikola Tesla the Explorer

•  Most of his inventions helped the world to become what they are now.

•  He invented the 1st X-ray machine, which now helps everyone.

•  He also invented the AC/DC current, which helped people get the idea of the invention TV.

•  He invented Wireless communication which,is what is in a phone so we can make calls to people for emergencies, friends, and family.
