WELCOME TO CUBITT SESSIONS 2018, A FREE MUSIC FESTIVAL AT KING’S CROSS
This year our programme features a fine selection of artists presented with local partners Tête à Tête, Roundhouse, Tileyard Studios (Platoon), Kings Place, and classical music curator Anthony Whitworth-Jones.
Cubitt Sessions include a specially curated series of classical delights featuring the superb London Brass, a world-class classical recital from Daniel Lebhardt, and an evening courtesy of young singers from English National Opera. There’s also a more contemporary offer of music from the West End, folk music from Thom Gould & Saachi, and the virtuosic, versatile and prize-winning traditional Balkans and Turkish band She’Koyokh.
King’s Cross favourites, Tête à Tête Opera, return with a selection of quirky and wonderfully modern shows programmed by Bill-Bankes-Jones. In addition, we have our Family Sundays celebrating street culture and the talents of PanGottic, Circus Geeks and Acrojou.
‘Cubitt Sessions grows as a festival each year, and I am thrilled to be involved in the programming for this fourth season. My aim is to provide the audience with concerts of the highest quality, and to make the evenings fun! King’s Cross has become a thriving urban centre with so much on offer to suit all tastes, and these concerts are designed to appeal to a wide cross section of society, to the young at heart of all ages.’ — Anthony Whitworth-Jones

Resident at Kings Place, Aurora Orchestra is the first orchestra in the world to perform whole symphonies entirely from memory, without music stands or sheet music. For this special free performance at King’s Cross, Aurora invites you to experience this electrifying performance style at close quarters, including a chance to get physically inside the orchestra and experience a symphony from within. Featuring excerpts from Mozart’s 40th symphony, performed ahead of a major concert at Kings Place later the same day.
‘Marvellous… Playing from memory, Aurora created an organic sense of community, dynamism and inspiration.’ — The New York Times

PLATOON PRESENTS: TAKEOVER
TALULAH20 year old Post-Soul artist Talulah was raised on a Spanish island by British parents before relocating to Dalston just over a year ago to learn production and immerse herself in the East London live music scene. Talulah blends live instruments and analog electronic equipment as a back drop for some classic soul song-writing (think Solange meets James Blake).
SIPPRELL South London singer/songwriter Sipprell combines the raw beauty of live instruments, soulful vocals and enchanting electronic production to take you to a new level of spacey neo-soul. Fluent on the violin, piano and guitar, Sipprell pours everything she can into her music. Her strong yet sensitive identity can be felt in her production and her sincere lyrics. Sipprell has has wide industry support on earlier singles and her most recent release looks set to do the same, as the new track 'Personal', invites the listener into a more private side of Sipprell.
LUKE MARZECLuke Marzec’s muddy tone, Polish-British twang, and unconventional delivery is astonishingly inimitable. Avidly interested in culture, from Miles Davis to Kendrick Lamar via James Blake, he borrows from hip-hop, jazz, electronic, and dub. Having formally trained in classical and jazz sax, he’s a multi-instrumentalist whose self-produced tracks feel universal and timeless yet contemporary and London.

We’re proud to present three talented Platoon artists for this years’ Cubitt Sessions — it’s a great platform to showcase our artists to King’s Cross audiences at this free event for the public.’ — Lucie Watson (Platoon)

In this work, Bishi takes a personal and intersectional journey reflecting on her experiences. As a British-Bengali daughter of immigrants, adopted by London’s community of alternative queer nightlife, she has lived through a unique cross section of London’s contemporary urban landscape. Bishi’s former albums, ‘Albion Voice’ and ‘Nights At The Circus,’ have dealt with finding a cultural voice between polar opposites and being energised by its tensions. The Good Immigrant seeks to further these debates and to explore the universal themes of identity, belonging, and finding unity in a divided world.

‘It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to programme an evening of Cubitt Sessions for the 2nd year in a row and it’s a great opportunity for us to share the young talent we have emerging from the Roundhouse, and within such a professional and high quality environment. Our partnership with Cubitt Sessions gives some of our incredible resident artists the opportunity to perform to audiences beyond the Roundhouse.’ Collin Hills — Music Programme Producer (Roundhouse)
DM FARLEYOriginally hailing from Scotland, DM Farley moved to London to study film production during which time his passion for music came to the fore – both through writing scores for films and being in and out of various bands.
His journey into contemporary music began age 9 when he began playing saxophone and was introduced to the sounds of Cannonball Adderley and Herbie Hancock. By 15 he was both an accomplished saxophonist and pianist and was exploring the sixties through The Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones, and The Doors. This combination of influences lets him enjoy an eclectic sound that continues to evolve with each release.

MORE INFORMATION↪ saachimusic.com↪ facebook.com/ saachimusicofficial↪ @saachiofficial
7PMRUNNING TIME: 30 MINUTES
SAACHISaachi is an Indie-Pop act with Jazz influences playing exciting, eclectic, original music. Featuring keys, kit, brass and bass, with high energy vocals, the band has played to packed out audiences at venues like the iconic Camden Assembly, Upstairs at the Garage and the Cambridge Junction, and supported Irit Dekel at the Roundhouse on her national tour.
6:30PMRUNNING TIME: 30 MINUTES
JOE WINTERA singer and song-maker who leans to the electronic left, Joe Winter creates music evocative of his hometown of London, as well as a few other places in between. But his voice evokes nowhere you’ve ever been. Winter has embraced a vast array of far-flung influences and is using his rich baritone vocal to sing of injustices at home and elsewhere, personal and public. Winter makes assertive use of percussion to both harmoniously and contrastingly juxtapose his arresting vocal, which, with its rich textures, ascends and descends somehow with both weight and lightness. The result are tunes full of soul, deep in meaning, and yet with a lyrical wit that doesn’t fail to raise eyebrows. With all of that, it’s impossible not to bob your head along to the beat.

TÊTE À TÊTE PRESENTS: MUSIC FROM THE SHOW NIGHTSHADE: AUBERGINE(MUZIEKTHEATER TRANSPARANT)
RUNNING TIME: 1 HOURNO INTERVAL
Nightshade: Aubergine was originally conceived as a ‘music theatre road movie’. Together with documentary maker Lisa Tahon, soprano Claron McFadden went in search of the common roots among different cultures, based on the spectacular migration history of an age-old nightshade plant: the aubergine. Together they travelled to countries around the Mediterranean sea: Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain and Morocco. They stayed with host families, cooked local aubergine dishes and learned traditional songs. This concert is the reflection of this special series of culinary-musical encounters.

Join Tête à Tête for a nightmare evening as they massacre another classic. Following their disastrous Bohème in 2017, Timothy Burke creates another lousy orchestration to perform with totally inept Bill Bankes-Jones. A shambolic production where stellar singers Gweneth-Ann Rand (Tosca), Ronald Samm (Cavaradossi) and Keel Watson (Scarpia) do their best to survive the mayhem. Will Tosca leap to her death off the Castel Sant’Angelo? Will magnificent singing be ruined by hideously ear-splitting recorder playing? There is only one way to find out...
