Technical Summary IntelligentDrillingToolsintroducetheAnnularVelocitySplitfloworAVSelectroniccirculatingvalvewithsplitflowandfullbypasspositions.AVSisanelectronicmulti-positioncirculatingvalve.TheAVStoolsarenotactivatedbydropballsordartsoranyothertypeofmechanismdeliveredfromsurfacethroughthedrillpipe.Thetoolsareelectronicand intelligent,meaningtheyhaveonboardsensorswithlogicandcanrespondtosurfacecommandssentby“Downlinking”acodedsignaltothetoolviaapatternofpumpson/offandspecificRPMaccordingtoafunctionmap.TheAVStoolsreadthesignalsandshifttotheparticularpositionrequested.

TheAVShas3positions:

1. Through Bore–allthedrillingfluidflowgoesdirectlythroughthetool,BHAandBit.

2. Split Flow–Thisisanopenpositionthatcanbenozzledtoallowacertainamountoftheflowtobediverted into theAnnulus,bypassing theBHA.ThiscanbeengineeredusingIDT’sSplitFlowsoftwaretoallowtheminimumflowrequirementtopowerMWD/RSS/Motor/Bithydraulicsetc.,andtheremainderouttotheannulus.ThismaximisesAnnularVelocityforagivensurfacepressureincreasingHoleCleaningability.

3. Full Bypass–ThispositionopensuptheTotalFlowArea(TFA)furtherandthusallowingmaximumflowratetotheannulusforthehighestAnnularVelocityatthelowestsurfacepressure. In addition, if Lost Circulation Material (LCM) is pumped, the tool can pass150ppbcoarseLCM.AballvalveclosesofftheboretoensurethattheDrillingtoolsandBitdonotbecomeblockedbytheLCMmaterial.
