Fierro cites her father, who isfrom Mexico, and religiousinspiration was what got herinvolved in bringing the pro-gram to Hobbs.

“My earthly father is myinspiration and my heavenlyfather is my passion for thisproject,” Fierro said. “I knowfirsthand the importance ofeducation. Both my parentssacrificed so much to put theirfive children through school.”

One tutor, MelissaHillenbrand, a senior physicaleducation major from RioRancho, said the tutoring expe-rience has given her a greaterappreciation of what immi-grants to this country experi-ence.

“They work so hard,” saidHillenbrand. “They want tosucceed like everyone else toachieve their specific goals.We take so much for granted inthis country. We have a lot ofthings handed to us.”

Fierro noted the ESL pro-gram is Bible-based. She saidafter the work on the comput-ers, the students read bothEnglish and Spanish versionsof the Bible, with ESL stu-dents reading in English andtutors reading in Spanish.

“In a way, everyone is learn-ing,” Fierro said. “The tutorsget a chance to read in Spanishand learn the language, andthe students try their best toread in English.”

According to Fierro, FirstUnited Methodist Church issponsoring the program. Two

church members, AnitaThomas and David Portillo,volunteer their time to helpwith the program, along withFierro’s husband, Danny.

“We knew there was a need toget this program started,”Fierro said. “We know we are

making a difference in thecommunity, and the studentshave a passion to learn theEnglish language.”

The ESL class meets at 6 p.m.every Monday and Wednesdaynight at First UnitedMethodist Church.
