The Mercy Fund
Thank You Mercy Fund Offering for August 21
I want to take a few minutes to thank you for your faithful and sacrificial contributions to the Mercy Fund. Yes – there is more funding needed; but put that fact on hold for now. Thank you – and Praise God for Christ in you and what He has done (is doing)!
I want to thank you:
On behalf of those who have received from the Mercy Fund and don’t have the opportunity to thank you directly for your faithfulness and sacrifice. I’ve had the privilege of being close enough to hear the “Thank you”; but I’m merely the delivery boy. I hope you understand the depth of gratitude to you and praise to God for the tangible care that is provided.
I thank you for enabling me, along with the other deacons, the Financial Counseling Team and others, to walk with some of these saints as they walk through difficult times. I’ve learned, and am continuing to learn, that life is bro-ken even while it is being redeemed and it often doesn’t look like we would hope or dream. The perception of control is a comforting delusion, until confronted with our total lack of it.
God is providing, through your generosity, for the following types of ex-penses: Medical bills, car repairs, glasses, rent, utilities, phone, food, medicine, counseling, gas, taxes, and insurance. Their expenses are no different than yours. However, consider what your life would be like with-out just three of these items (and you don’t get to pick the timing or the duration). No, it’s not fun for others either. When Jesus walked on the earth in bodily form, he healed the sick, fed the hungry and restored sight to the blind. Through his Body, the Church, he continues to do has he has always done. And here is where ‘Thank you’ would not be appropriate. Praise God is much more in order! Praise his name for he does mar-velous works (even including us in the process)! Including the rich and the poor, the weak and the strong, the sick and the healthy, the young and the old, the bald and the beautiful (sorry for the redundancy).
I encourage those of you who participate in providing to continue in the way of sacrifice in which you have so faithfully walked in order to bless your brothers and sisters. If you have not yet participated in this service to the family of Covenant Pres., I invite you to do so as an expanded part of your worship.
We will collect a special offering for the Mercy Fund on Sunday the 21st of August to help fill the gap between now and our traditional Christmas (and then Easter) offering. This August offering will become part of the normal rhythm of special offerings supporting the Mercy Fund (December, April, August). While we have these three seasons as a special reminder concerning the Mercy Fund, you can make contributions at any time by placing “Mercy Fund” in the memo line of your check.
If you have any questions about the Mercy Fund, please contact any deacon.
Grace to you,
Mark Bentz

Small
Groups
Summer
2016
Small Groups are one of the primary avenues in the church for accomplishing our mission to equip disciples for kingdom growth and our vision to grow as a gospel-
centered church in our gathering, giving, and going locally and worldwide.
Small Groups provide an opportunity to gather and know others on a deeper level in the context of study,
prayer, mission, and worship.
If you have any questions about Small Groups, contact Greg Becker, Director of Small Groups and
Adult Discipleship, at 433-3051, orgreg@cov-pres.org.
During the summer, most of our home group leaders will be taking a break to spend time with family and for vacation. We do have one group that will continue to
meet throughout the summer.

PEOPLE PLEASING
I was a young pastor. I was doing everything I could to develop the teaching gift that God had
given me. I knew that my preaching wasn't perfect, and I knew I needed to gain experience, but I
wasn't that bad of a preacher, right?
Wrong, at least for one. There was a critical man in our congregation who never seemed to be
satisfied with my sermons, no matter how I approached them. One evening he came up to me and
said, "Paul, your preaching is killing us." What a way to start a conversation!
It got worse. He handed me a set of tapes and said, "I suggest listening to these. Just mimic the
preacher on the tapes and that will be better that what we've been getting." I was crushed.
I thought my ministry was over.
In the weeks that followed, my preaching got worse. I was fearful and nervous. I stumbled over my
words and had little confidence in my content. I would look out on the congregation, and this man
was the only one my eyes could see. It seemed impossible for me to ignore his disapproving
reactions and avoid his critical gaze.
What had happened to me? I didn't realize it at the time, but I had fallen into the snare of pleasing
people. The Bible also refers to this as fear of man. Proverbs 29:25 says, "The fear of man lays a
snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe."
It was clear - I had become trapped by my fear of this one man's opinion. Finally, the oldest lady in
our church had had enough. She came up to me after a sermon and said, "Paul, I'm convinced
that someone has gotten to you, and that you're preaching to please that person and not the
Lord."
Then she said, "Tomorrow, get up, forget that person, and study God's Word. Preach what God
has given you with confidence and joy or we're all in trouble." And with that, she turned and
walked out of the church.
I was so thankful for her honesty, and obviously am still thankful to this day. Why? Because this
little old lady revealed something significant about my heart: under pressure of criticism, I fell into
the snare of pleasing people instead of trusting in the Lord.
What about you? When you're mistreated by another person, do you get angry and try to prove
them wrong? Do you get intimidated and blindly follow their orders? Do you get wounded and
attempt to avoid all future encounters with them?
There's only one place where your heart can be healed, satisfied, and protected. It won't be
healed by exacting vengeance. It won't be satisfied in human approval. It won't be protected by
hiding.
No, your heart will only be healed, satisfied, and protected when you trust in the Lord and follow
his Word.
God bless
Paul Tripp
