Very few people settled in New Spain, but by the 1550, there were about 100,000 Spanish colonists.

Many people hoped to get rich because gold and silver, and other came to start large farms.

The Spanish needed many workers, so they forced American Indians to be slaves, but thousands were dying from diseases.

As more and more Indians died, so the colonists looked for other workers, so they brought Africans.

Enslaved Americans were working under the same terrible conditions under which the Indians had work.

Some colonists became concerned with how the Indians were being treated.

By the 1500’s several European nations, including Spain had sent explores to claim land in America.

After establishing New Spain in 1535 Spain formed colonies protect its land govern people.

Most of Spain's colonies were govern by Spanish leader in Mexico city.

A colony is a land ruled by another country.

Spain protected its claims to land in North America by building forts.

The Broadlands stretched across what are today's Northern Mexico and Southern of United States from Florida to California.

In 1565 Pedro Menendez defiles and 1,500 soldiers, sailors and settlers sailed from Spain.

However many Indians were forced to work on missions formed and ranches.

Some settlers in the badlands of Northern Mexico built estates called haciendas.

The Spanish and the animals they brought with them changed lire for many Indian groups.

Spanish soldiers lead the way, building presidios of fort in the borderlands.

Spanish missionaries also help settle Santa Fe, the capital of the New Mexico colony.
