BATTLE OF THE BRAINS

WHAT IS BATTLE OF THE BRAINS?

A contest sponsored by Burns & McDonnell and Science City at Union Station.

Our task: To design an interactive science exhibit for possible installation at Science City.

We had to: Write a proposal addressing “Big STEM ideas”,

interactivity, age level, etc. Use Google Sketchup to design the floorplan and

layout of the exhibit. Create a budget and itemize expenses. Create a 2 minute video to accompany the entry.

OUR PROCESS

Our first meeting: After a lot of ideas we finally agreed on the “Big Bang theory” and how it ties into chemistry.

We met afterschool for 8 weeks. We read the rubric A LOT!We all did research on our “big idea” but then

we divided up the duties: Janeth-Wrote and typed the proposal Andie-Researched and made the budget Matt-Used Google Sketchup to create the layout Cheyenne-Made the video and helped everybody else

AT THE START OF OUR JOURNEY

THE NUMBERS

35 School districts in the KC Metro area.

128 different schools.456 teams.

2,465 students.560 submissions.

AND THEN…

They released the TOP 20…10 Secondary Finalists and 10 Elementary

Finalists

And we made it!

The finalists were chosen based on the rubric and the judge’s scores.

The winners were chosen based on the rubric score as well as popular vote (30% of final score)

AWARDS CEREMONYAlthough we didn’t “win it all”, we walked away

with backpacks full of goodies, a trophy, and a $2500 check to improve STEM education in our

school! (Then we played at Science City )

The Science and Math departments are working on a plan to improve STEM

education at THS.
