INTRODUCTION TO FIRE PROTECTIONFire-prevention systems can broadly be classified into two catego-
ries: Active Fire Protection and Passive Fire Protection. Any well-
equipped fire-fighting network should be a synthesis of these two
systems, both complimenting each other to prevent loss of life and
property.
Active Fire Protection (AFP) systems require a certain motion and
response to combat fire and can be either automatic (water
sprinklers, fire alarms, hypoxic air suppression systems, etc.) or
manual (emergency evacuation, fire-extinguishers, fire-fighters,
water hoses, etc.). These systems require periodic maintenance and
audits to verify their workability and response to fire. Juxtaposed
with AFP systems are Passive Fire Protection (PFP) systems that
creates compartmentalisation (or compartmentation) of the building
floor plate through fire-resistive walls and floors. The purpose of
these systems is to prevent the spread of fire by creating barriers to
its passage for a specified duration, enabling occupants to assemble
in a relatively safe compartment and eventually be pulled out to
safety.

FIRE RATED GLASS TYPESConventional soda-lime silicate glasses (with a coefficient of
-6expansion of 9 x 10 ) do not offer much resistance when exposed to
fire and shatter within minutes. Heat-treated glasses would last
slightly longer but not significantly enough. Special glass types such
as wired, borosilicate and intumescent inter-layered glasses are
available that offer varying levels of protection when amalgamated
with fire-resistant doors and framing systems. To understand the
performance levels, the European standard (EN 13501-2) defines
three classifications: E, EW and EI. The American UL standard
requires all five resistant materials to withstand the hose-stream test.
The glass prevents flames,
smoke and hot gases from
passing through. The fire
remains contained.
The glass restricts the
amount of heat passing
through it to the side which is
to be protected (radiation 2does not exceed 15 kW/m ).
The average temperature of the
glass on the protected side
remains below 140K which
eliminates the risk of self-
combustion of exposed materials
either due to radiation or convec-
tion of exposed materials and
means that buildings can be
evacuated safely and calmly.
Underwriters Laboratory (UL)
standard has a further requirement
that any fire-resistant glazing
should have the ability to with-
stand the hose-stream test, which
tests the assemblies' ability to
remain intact after a jet of water is
blasted on its surface when
exposure to fire. The test assesses
hose stream impact, erosion and
cooling effects in a consistent
manner. It is not intended to
replicate conditions that firefighters
might create when attacking a fire.

FIRE RESISTANT GLAZING IN BUILDINGS
Fire Doors with
Vision PanelsFire-rated doors are now a critical safety
feature in creating fire-barriers for
staircases, building entrances and exits
and internal applications such as
communal areas, foyers and corridors.
Facades and WindowsIncreasing focus on fire-safe facades is
mandating use of fire-rated glazing in
commercial and residential applications.
These facades stop the fire from
transmitting from inside-out or outside-
in as per the safety and regulatory
requirement.
FloorsFire-safe floors utilise glass and other
glazing materials to stop the flow of
fire between floors. As per many city
municipal codes, fires need to be
contained within the floor it
originated from and fire-rated floors
serve as an important barrier.
SkylightsFire-rated glazing can be used in
skylights to prevent the fire from
spreading through the building roof.
Specially important if there are
adjacent structures that need to be
protected against fire from inside the
building.
06
Fully Glazed Fire
DoorsA glass-glazed option to regular
fire-doors, these provide complete
transparency and better aesthetics
and are becoming increasingly
popular as use in fire-door barriers.
07
Lift Doors and EnclosuresProtection of lifts and elevators against fire is of paramount
importance and fire-rated glass doors are becoming preferred
to service this requirement. Apart from its visual appeal, these
doors help in identifying potential survivors on either side as the
glass remains transparent throughout the fire and can greatly
help rescue efforts.
Stairs EnclosureStaircases are the fastest and safest exit
routes in most constructions and it is
important to protect their access points
with fire-rated doors with inbuilt vision
panels. These vision panels greatly
assist in understanding the extent of
fire and helps facilitate coordinated
getaways from fire-affected areas..
Data Storage
and Server Room
EnclosuresPreservation of electronic data against risk
of fire is critical and almost all server and
data room enclosures are now designed
with fire-rated glasses. With its dual
benefits of integrity and transparent views,
glass serves as a mandatory, yet desirable
solution for these cabinet constructions.
PartitionsCompartmentalisation of floor plates to create fire-safe refuge spaces
are now a mandatory architectural feature in all commercial,
hospitality and residential developments and are dictated as per the
local civic regulations. Fire-rated glass serves as an exceptional
material of choice for creating these compartments due to its
transparence, longevity and almost zero-maintenance.

®PYRAN S is a pre-stressed, monolithic, borosilicate single-pane ®safety glass in accordance with EN 13024-1. PYRAN S is far superior
to traditional fire resistant glasses. The secret lies in the interaction
between the material and the production process. Manufactured in
a micro-float facility, which is the only are in the world, the fire
resistant properties of the special float glass surpass those of soda
lime glass by far. The unique combination of borosilicate glass and
the float process result in the special glass type As a component in
fire-resistant glazing that meets the requirements of resistance
classes E 30, E 60, E 90 and E 120, it has proven its outstanding
optical and mechanical characteristics over the years in a wide
variety of buildings. ®PYRAN S as a single pane safety glass meets all requirements for
improved safety. In the event of breakage it displays a typical
toughened glass breakage i.e. into small fragments and meets the
requirements of statutory accident insurance as well as the Health
and Safety at Work Act, thus providing an added plus in terms of
safety and reliability.
The versatile champion in fire protection

As bespoke as your ideas®PYRAN S unites fire protection and decor in a unique way.
The transparency and lightness of glass in buildings and rooms take
on a whole new character through bright colors and attractive
decors. The variety of colors and motifs available is virtually
unlimited. Now planners and architects responsible for fire
protection can also be involved in the overall design creativity of the
planning process.
Design with sandblasting
Sandblasting can be used to purposely modify the surface structure ®of PYRAN S panes. A visually inconspicuous design is the result, the
aesthetics of which are fully revealed with illumination. This process
does not diminish the durability or the performance of these
functional glasses.
When added to the glass surface, extremely thin and nearly invisible
functional layers protect it from corrosion, dirt and other contamina-
tion
Design with screen printing®Entire surfaces of PYRAN S can be printed without restriction on the
degree of printing, so that characteristics such as glass transparency,
energy flow and/or glare protection can be individually managed. ® Even the fire performance of SCHOTT special glass types is not
reduced and two hour fire rated partitions are still possible. With rich
color nuances and an abundance of patterns, screen printing opens
up a wealth of new design possibilities for fire resistant glazing.
Depending on the colors chosen, either screen printing or a roller
process is used to apply them to the glass surface. In the subsequent
thermal tempering process, the colors are burned into the glass
surface. The resulting glasses are as colorfast, abrasion-resistant,
scratch-resistant and weatherproof as unprocessed glass surfaces,
and require the same low maintenance.
®PYRAN S – butt joint glazing with two-color
screen-printed pattern
®Screen printing with PYRAN S – new ideas which go beyond
simple aesthetic considerations
® • Possibility to print entire surfaces of PYRAN S
• Possibility to regulate transparency and energy flow through design
measures such as progressive frit patterns
• Screening and anti-glare protection
• Many different design options with a wide spectrum of brilliant
colours and patterns
®Here is a selection of standard patterns for PYRAN S. All colors and
designs are available as grid or graduated grid screen printing.
Other colors and patterns are available on request.
®The color of printed PYRAN S panes can appear different depend-
ing on the glass thickness and the viewing side. The maximum
pattern dimensions also varies depending on the pattern and pane
thickness. It is always advisable to discuss application conditions
before choosing the final pattern. Just ask one of our experts for
help.

EI 30 to 120®SCHOTT PYRANOVA
BMW World, Munich
Developer: BMW AG | Architect: Coop Himmelb(l)au, Austria
Stay cool, calm and collected ®PYRANOVA special glass is a clear, laminated composite glass that
is made up of several thin panes of float glass. A transparent, fire
resistant layer that foams up in the event of a fire has been placed
between the panes.
®When used in fire resistant glazing, PYRANOVA special glass
prevents the passage of fire, smoke and heat radiation. Due to its
®structure, the standard construction of PYRANOVA special glass
provides protection from either side.
®PYRANOVA special glass when used as a component in fire
resistant glazing meets the requirements of fire resistance classes EI
15 to EI 120, or EW 30 to EW 60. For fire barriers, it meets the
requirements of T 30 to T 90.
®Fire resistant glazing with PYRANOVA special glass acts as a barrier
against the spread of fire, smoke and heat radiation in the event of
fire. The float glass pane facing the fire shatters. The enclosed,
transparent fire resistant layers then foam up and form an opaque
heat shield, which prevents the passage of heat radiation in case of
fire. The requirements of an EI glazing are met, if the temperature
rise on the non-fire side does not exceed 140 °C (average) or 180 °C
in any one position. Depending on the thickness of the composite,
the fire resistance time can be influenced accordingly.

Fire Test The Fire Endurance Test for fire-protection rated glazing subjects a
full-size window or door assembly to a controlled time-temperature
profile in a furnace. The test duration is 20 minutes up to three
hours, depending on the desired rating, with temperatures reaching
nearly 2000° F in three hours. The window assembly including
frame, glazing and components must not allow flaming on the non-
fire side, and the glazing must survive the test without breaking or
cracking. This test is performed in accordance with test standards UL ®9, UL 10B, NPFA 252 and NFPA 257. PYRAN Platinum is tested and
certified by Underwriters Laboratories for fire protection up to 90
minutes in windows and 180 minutes in doors.
Sound Transmission The acoustical performance of glazing is described by the Sound
®Transmission Class (STC) measured by ASTM E90. PYRAN Platinum
L effectively reduces unwanted sound transmission and has an STC
rating of 36, making it suitable for installation in LEED-rated school
buildings.
Impact Test In installations where accidental human impact could occur, fire-
rated glazings must also withstand Impact Tests. Impact is tested
according to CPSC 16 CFR 1201 using a 100 lb. weight swung from a
pendulum at 48-inch drop height. The glazing must remain intact ®with no significant openings. PYRAN Platinum F with a surface
applied safety film and PYRAN® Platinum L with an impact-resistant
interlayer meet CPSC Category II impact tests.
Hose Stream Test Immediately following the Fire Endurance Test, the fire-exposed side
of the test assembly is subjected to impact from water blast in a
prescribed pattern for duration appropriate to the specimen size. ®The glazing must remain intact in the frame. PYRAN Platinum fire-
rated glass-ceramic passes the hose stream test thanks to its
superior strength and near zero thermal expansion.
Clean composition plus innovative manufacturing
equals excellent glass properties®In designing the chemical composition for PYRAN Platinum,
®technical experts at SCHOTT gave special consideration for human
health and environmental safety. The glass is manufactured without
hazardous heavy metals, antimony and arsenic normally used as ®refining agents. Instead, SCHOTT uses unique manufacturing steps
to produce high quality glass without hazardous metals. Therefore ®SCHOTT does not contribute to the mining and transport of
antimony and arsenic, and protects employees from handling them.
®PYRAN Platinum is clear and colourless, closely resembling normal
architectural window glass, without the distracting orange/amber
tint associated with competitive glass-ceramics. The neutral colour ®allows PYRAN Platinum to blend in with the surrounding architec-
ture of the building. This unique attribute is a result of carefully
designed de-colorisation agents added to the glass melt. The ®composition of PYRAN Platinum is stable and is not sensitive to
exposure to UV light rays or heat.

Fire-rated glass alone is not effective enough against fire and
heat. Therefore professionals are required to find the best
solution with three core building elements - fire protection
glass, fire protective frames and fire protection accessories. FG
Glass exclusively presents the world-famous Gluske and Rolf-
Kuhn range of fire-rated accessories, components and housing
industry products from Germany to complement our glass and
complete the system requirements.
The fire protection accessories consist of glazing blocks, sealant
strips, silicones and intumescent materials which are used in
frame construction. These elements are suitable for almost
every kind of common or more complex glass constructions.

Higher requirements on different fire protection glazings have mandated a more
frequent implementation of intumescent materials in glazing constructions and
constructions today benefit from a reduced passage of heat and higher
mechanical stability.
Due to their different technical performance, our exhaustive range of intumescent ® ® ®materials such as Kerafix Flexpan 200, Kerafix Flexpan 200 NG-G and Palusol T
allow a comprehensive variety of applications. Use them for fire-rated doors, fire-
rated glazing and applications as varied as fire-rated safes and ventilation and
HVAC systems.
