California Sea Cucumber

This spiky animal is deceivingly soft. Its many spikes are mimicry that makes the California Sea Cucumber look like a dangerous animal, when in fact it is as soft as an earthworm. Like all other sea cucumbers, this animal breathes through its butt. The California sea cucumber is sometimes known as the dust mop of the seafloor. It eats detritus that has fallen to the seafloor with its fluffy “mouth”. It also filters food out of the water when it breaths. So the California sea cucumber eats, breaths and poops through its butt!

The California sea cucumber can sense their predators, the sunflower star, through the chemicals the sea star lets off as it approaches. To escape it flexes its body muscles to wiggle up into the water and swim away from danger.
