Obesity can be hereditary, as some people tend to stay the same weight foryears without much effort, whereas others find they put on weight quickly if theyare not careful about what they eat. This could be due to your genes because somegenetic conditions can affect appetite, determine how much fat your body stores, the rate at which you burn energy and how the body stores fat. These geneticfactors simply alter your eating or energy burning habits.
Obesity is also promoted by deep set psychological and emotional factors, such as distressing events that could include childhood abuse, loss of a loved oneor marital and other family problems. Emotional stress, anxiety, illnesses orchronic pain can lead to depression and overeating. Some people eat as a way tocomfort and calm themselves, to avoid dealing with unpleasant tasks or situations.Such traumatic incidents can contribute to overeating which is easy in our culturetoday because of the availability of a variety of food.
Obesity is a serious problem prevalent in our modern society and steps needto.be taken to overcome this social problem. According to The World HealthOrganization (WHO), approximately 1.6 billion adults were overweight and atleast 400 million adults were obese in 2005. If steps are not taken 1o reduce thenumbers, approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700niillion will be obese bv 2015.
