Linked Data: The Web of Data

1. Use URIs as names for things. 2. Use HTTP URIs so that people can look up those names. 3. When someone looks up a URI, provide useful information, using

the standards (RDF, SPARQL). 4. Include links to other URIs so that they can discover more things.

Tim Berners-Lee (2006)

BIBFRAME: Why?

“Most felt any benefits of RDA would be largely unrealized in a MARC environment. MARC may hinder the separation of elements and ability to use URIs in a linked data environment.”

Report and Recommendations of the U.S. RDA Test Coordinating Committee. Executive Summary. 2011.

BIBFRAME: Scope

"Demonstrate credible progress towards a replacement for MARC."Report and Recommendations of the U.S. RDA Test Coordinating Committee. Executive Summary. 2011.

“a foundation for the future of bibliographic description, both on the web, and in the broader networked world.” BIBFRAME website.
