Key Issues
1. How do you focus on two speeds at the same time? 2. What initiatives should remain Mode 1 and Mode 2? 3. What initiatives should be focused across the portfolio?

– Sizings.
– HA/DR.
– Vertical and geography.

Bimodal Game Plan: Strategic Windows/Linux x86 Choice, Everything Else a Justifiable Tactical Niche
1. Choose app andDBMS software
2. Choose Linux and Windows on x86 as strategic default
3. Choose virtualization options and consider commercial issues
4. Look for bimodal technologies first to share Mode 1 and Mode 2
5. Only consider other platforms as a bimodal niche/tactical play

Microsoft Hyper-V
Microsoft OSs, Google Kubernetes,
Linux on Power LE, Docker, Linux Containers (LXC),Open-Source KVM
Predominantly Mode 1
Strategic Mode 1 infrastructure limited to Mode 1 use on projects. Ties to tactical legacy platforms and predominantly brownfield (installed base) projects. Traditional IT.
Desirable default and can be deployed Mode 1 and Mode 2.Some brownfield and greenfield use for IT and OT across the portfolio.
Choose only as a Mode 2 choice. Strong across the stack, strongand new business, (greenfield). Can be new IT, but leverage OT.
Predominantly Mode 2
Bimodal Choice

Mode 2Selection
Try to reuse and share bimodal infrastructure, select Mode 2 as
tactical alternative and contain or switch if it is not mainstream.

Bimodal: Mode 1 and Mode 2 Extremes ...
Mode 1 BiasBimodal Mode 1 with strong Mode 2:§ Flexible Mode 1 to integrate with Mode 2.
§ Siloed Mode 2 creates islands of infrastructure for OT.
§ Better than Mode 2 bias.
Mode 2 BiasBimodal Mode 2 with strong Mode 1:§ Easily integrated Mode 2.§ Siloed Mode 1 entrenched legacy platforms.
§ Legacy requires a business case, not new technology.
BipolarSeparate Mode 1 and Mode 2:§ Good Mode1 and Mode 2 optimization.
§ Reuse weak, silos everywhere.§ Desirable but NOT overall, über efficient.

§ Management and integration?§ Look at phase changingthe domains.

BimodalAll bimodal, strong idealistic vision: § Ideal world, not attainable today.§ Not all domains will get bimodal at the same time.

ü Plan to migrate from declining legacy Mode 1 platforms on next reiteration of project going bimodal wherever possible.
ü Consider Mode 2 use of applications for performance and agility of workloads tied to a business case.
ü Look at each Mode 1/Mode 2/bimodal vendor and track the test/development production split with references.
ü Drive your own bimodal infrastructure negotiations, ROI, TCO and roadmaps, not vendors for you!
ü Plan for next year's Mode 2 to make this year's Mode 2 move to more Mode 1 (IT/OT fashion).

Action Plan for I&O Leaders
Monday Morning:§ Understand your niche Mode 1 platforms and dependencies.§ Choose the application and DBMS first, then the best bimodal platform.
Next 90 Days:§ Rationalize the drive to x86 Linux/Windows virtualized environments for the best bimodal dollar/SLA.
§ Look at Mode 2 infrastructure for tactical alternatives.
Next 12 Months:§ Migrate to a strategic mainstream bimodal platform.§ Consider other platforms as tactical niches for controlled Mode 1 and Mode 2.
