I wish to expressmy deep gratitude and sinc
ere thanks to our principal Mrs.Lalitha Thia
garagan for providing the best facilities and
enviroment to carry out this project success
fully.
This project would not have been feasible w
ithout the proper guidence of my Biology te
acher Mrs.Ambika who helped me to choos
e this project and who guided me throughou
t this project in every possible way
I also taken pleasure in acknowledging my
parents for their support
I also thank our Biology lab attender Mrs.Parvathy in herm willingness in providing us

Several studies were conducted to find the effect
of music on plant growth and Dr. T. C. Singh c
arried out one of these earlier research.
In 1962, Dr. T. C. Singh, head of the Botany De
partment at Annamalia University, India, experimented with the effect of musical sounds on the
growth rate of plants and found that balsam plan
ts accelerated by 20% in height and 72% in bio
mass when exposed to music. He initially experi
mented with classical music. Later, he experime
nted with raga music (type of music that improvises on a set of rhythms and notes) played on flu
te, violin, harmonium and reena, an Indian instr
ument; and found to have similar effects.
He repeated his experiment with field crops usin
g a particular type of ragaplayed through a gram
ophone and loudspeakers. The size of crops incr
eased to between 25 to 60% above the regional
average.

The absorption spectra (top) and the action spec
tra (middle) demonstrate which wavelenghts of
light are most important for photosynthesis. Th
e absorption spectra shows that green light is ab
sorbed the least by all three pigments (the peaks
of the lines represent the most important wavel
engths for photosynthesis for each pigment). T
he action spectra shows the rate of photosynthes
is at different wavelentghts of light, which com
bines the activity of all of the pigments present
and is lowest in the green/yellow wavelenghts.
The bottom image summarizes the classic 1883experiment by Engelmann. Engelmann expose
d segments filamentous algae to different wavel
engths of light and mixed bacteria in the solutio
n that cluster near oxygen sources. Engelmann
was able to determine the wavelengths of light t
hat resulted in the highest rates of photosynthesi
s based on the segments that had the largest am
ounts of bacteria clusters around the algae.

Then I built four boxes out of plywood and I fitted sound proof foam insulation. I plant
ed the fast plant seeds in black planters and put together the reservoirs for watering. Iput a planter and reservoir in each box with a CD player out front and headphones insi
de with the plants. Everyday for twenty days I checked on the plants and recorded thei
r growth.
I built three boxes with 5 different colored transparencies on top and front. I planted s
eeds about inch into the pots and let them grow. I recorded measurements every 2-
3 days. The Plants were shown different colored light. There were 3 different plants for
each different colored light. I measured overall height and leaf width for the tallest an
d best plant of each color.

It is visible from the graph and observation that
Red light gives the best result where it had the lon
gest length
In green light it gave the poor result
Yellow gave the nearest height to that of red light
Blue gave the moderate height
In the case of music
The plant grown in the presence of classical music
(Nithyashree Mahadevan concerts)gave the best re
sults. The second best was observed with silence.L
east performance was given by Rock music.
From these we can conclude classical and red give
big growth.Green and Rock gives the least result.
Blue and silence gives the healthy growth

Make sure that the plants are away from their
enemies
Do provide sufficient space
Cut off the weedsProvide the same resouces for all the plants
