WHAT IS A BOARD GAME?

A board game is a game that involves counters or pieces moved or placed on a pre-marked surface or "board", according to a set of rules.

Games can be based on pure strategy, chance (e.g. rolling dice) or a mixture of the two, and usually have a goal which a player aims to achieve.

SPEAKING WITH A BOARDGAME?

-Speaking skills in English can be effectively developed by engaging students in board games that allow for verbal responses.

-Both listening and speaking skills need to be developed simultaneously. The more listening a student does to the language, the greater the verbal production.

According to Stephen Saylor:

-In the heat of game competition, language learners, [first- or second-language students] will be less self-conscious about making mistakes and as a result will learn more.

TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOARD GAMES

The ones we can make in order to practice/reinforce something in the classroom.

Didactic board games:

The ones that are produced with the sole purpose of providing entertainment.

Commercial board games:

FAMOUS BOARD GAMES

A board that includes cartoon images of 24 people and their first names. The game starts with each player selecting a card of their choice from a separate pile of cards containing the same 24 images. The object of the game is to be the first to determine which card one's opponent has selected.

Cluedo ( Clue in North America) is a popular murder/mystery-themed deduction board game published in Leeds, England in 1949.

The object of the game is for players to strategically move around the game board (a mansion), in the guise of one of the game's six characters, collecting clues from which to deduce which suspect murdered the game's perpetual victim, Dr. Black, and with which weapon and in what room.

The game is similar to Catch Phrase, in which a player tries to get his or her teammates to guess words using gestures and verbal clues.

Taboo is a word guessing party game. The objective of the game is for a player to have his/her partner(s) guess the word on his/her card without using the word itself or five additional words listed on the card.

Dungeons & Dragons (abbreviated as D&D) is a fantasy role-playing game (RPG). It was derived from miniature wargames with a variation of the rules’ system.D&D assigns each player a specific character to play. These characters embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting.
