EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL
It is hard to summarize 2017 with so much good news for the renewable energies sector, for ACERA and its members. The 3,970 MW in operation in November 2016, became 4,766 MW by the end of 2017, which means a 20% increase in NCRE installed capacity; a surprise considering the current economic situation of the country, with an annual growth rate below 2%. Even more: during October we reached -for one month- the goal of 20% NCRE projected for 2025, eight years in advance! Quite an achievement, a fruit of the effort and commitment of our member companies and their collaborators.
Alongside the sector’s growth, ACERA has also experienced an institutional strengthening, becoming one of the largest and most representative associations of the sector, as well as a key actor in political, regulatory and technical discussions, allowing a rapid growth of our industry. An example of this is that our Executive Director was chosen by President Bachelet as a member of the Permanent Presidential Advisory Commission for Climate Change. It is also noteworthy that ACERA’s members represent over 95% of the total installed capacity of the National Electric System (SIC + SING) and that we cover the entire electrical industry value chain, sharing all a common vision: “Drive a 100% renewable, competitive and sustainable electric matrix for Chile”.
NCRE are still the most successful technologies in the market, both on public and private energy bids. In fact, during 2017 large and emblematic companies trusted NCRE sources for
their power supply. All of this in a highly-competitive and attractive-price scenario, which will eventually improve the Chilean industry’s competitivity and reduce the bills of all the consumers. One of the major milestones that will boost our sector is the SIC-SING interconnection, which will allow a greater NCRE flow from Arica to Chiloe, reducing the current transmission restrictions that are facing several solar and wind projects in Norte Chico. This project, together with the new 500KV Polpaico-Cardones line, are key pieces for the medium and long-term electric sector development, allowing an adequate complement of all NCRE technologies, where each one contributes with its attributes for a robust and safe system.
Finally, we ended the year with the presidential election, where ACERA met with the candidates’ programmatic teams, directly and through the #EnergíaPresidencial initiative, driving relevant themes such as the gradual -but definitive- decarbonization of our matrix, the electrification of public and private transport, the increase of the CO2 tax, and the continuity of the Energy Policy, among other subjects.
On behalf of ACERA, I wish you an excellent 2018, and I want to thank you for your support and your strong belief in a modern, sustainable and 100% renewable Chile.

NEWS
Eight months lasted the NCRE and Energy training for Communicators organized by ACERA, ended in November. But the need to know in situ a renewable plant was evident, and so a technical visit was organized to the Quilapilún Solar Park, of ATLAS Renewable Energy, as an official closure to the course.
The solar plant, located in the province of Chacabuco, is the first large-scale plant in the Metropolitan Region, with an installed capacity of 110 MW. Considering the geographical location of the journalists attending the course, there was clearly no better place to learn about one of the most developed NCRE technologies in the country, and, after obtaining the permission of the company, the visit was performed.
About 20 journalists took part in the activity, which was focused on presenting the functioning, operation and maintenance of a solar photovoltaic park through a tour of the facilities. The visit lasted about two hours and the communicators could clear their doubts concerning the technology, the operation and cleaning of the panels, among others.
When the visit ended, the journalists thanked for the opportunity, and expressed that it had been a privilege to get to know personally and in detail a solar park and thus answer all kinds of doubts concerning this technology.
JOURNALISTS OF THE PRESS COURSE VISIT THE QUILAPILÚN SOLAR PARK
On the threshold of a new year, in which, in addition, ACERA turns 15, the Association carried out for the first time a working session with its entire Council, Board of Directors and Executive Team, in order to jointly plan the new stage facing a much more consolidated industry and the new challenges that will come with a new government.
The meeting took place in a hotel which, though located in the heart of Santiago, is as peaceful as the countryside, and therefore granted a quiet and relaxed journey, where the attendees were able to evaluate 2017 and project their concerns and challenges for the next year. In addition, the main subjects to be developed during 2018 were defined, so that ACERA keeps consolidating as the representative of the renewable sector in Chile.
The activity ended with a typical Chilean barbecue, and a quite original race with solar cell-driven cars, built by the participants themselves.

Although electric vehicles in Chile do no exceed 200 units, this trend should change radically in the next few years, following international trends. This is why the Chilean Government developed the new National Electromobility Strategy, to promote this kind of transport and face the subsequent challenges.
The initiative seeks to outline the actions that Chile should take in the short and long terms to achieve a 40% of electrical public transport vehicles by 2050, contribute to the national energy efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigation, and to improve Chilean people mobility and quality of life.
The new strategy is the result of the joint work of the Ministries of Energy, Transport and Environment, supported by different experts, academicians and representatives of private companies.

INTRODUCING THE NATIONAL ELECTROMOBILITY STRATEGY
Several international rankings, among which the Bloomberg (ClimateScope) and EY (RECA) stand out, have positioned Chile in the last few years as Top 10 among the most attractive destinations to invest in renewable energies. The reason is that our country has -as a unique characteristic- every one of the renewable resources for power generation, and at high potentials, so we can provide solar, wind, geothermal, mini hydro, biomass and marine energy.
In view of this favorable scenario, the Executive Director of Imagen de Chile, Myriam Gomez, and the Executive Director of ACERA, Carlos Finat, signed an alliance aimed at working together to strengthen abroad the position reached by our country in Non-Conventional Renewable Energies. In this regard, Carlos Finat stated that “we are very pleased with the agreement signed with Marca Chile. We see a great synergy and the possibility of jointly developing highly potential activities to bring talent to Chile and strengthen our country as a preferred destination for investments in the energy sector”.
The signing of this agreement consolidates a long-term alliance which had already had previous approaches in Expo Astaná, carried out in Kazajistan, and in ExpoERNC Chile 2017, to communicate the potential offered by our country for clean energy generation both to foreign and local audiences.

During the last month of 2017, the Environmental Assessment Service granted the environmental approval to two NCRE projects: one solar photovoltaic (9 MW) and one wind project (51.75 MW), totaling 60.75 MW.
On the other hand, two solar photovoltaic projects were admitted to environmental permit process during this month, totaling 18 MW, of which the “Bellavista” photovoltaic park, of SolarPack (9 MW), stands out.
In the Exempt Resolution Nº 740 dated December 21, 2017, published by the CNE, four NCRE projects were declared in construction, totaling 17.2 MW. Three of them use solar photovoltaic technology (15 MW), and the fourth is a run-of-river mini hydro (2.7 MW).
The abovementioned document also announced that five NCRE projects began their test period, totaling 129.2 MW, of which the “Cabo Leones I) wind project, of Ibereólica (115.5 MW) stands out.

What products or services does your company deliver and to what kind(s) of NCREs?Nordex is one of the main wind-turbine manufacturers in the world, with over 18GW of installed power, contributing to wind energy generation across the whole world.
Which have been the latest new services or changes introduced by your Company?Nordex Group resulted from the purchase in 2016 of the Spanish wind-turbine manufacturer Acciona Windpower, by Nordex SE, a German wind-turbine manufacturer. We have faced several organizational changes since then, aimed at fostering our product portfolio, with the purpose of delivering the best customer service. Most notable of this merger has been the synergy between both companies.
What are the main projects -or themes- you have been recently working on concerning NCRE or the environment? In case they are generation plans, where are the located and which are their main characteristics? Our products include turbines mounted on concrete towers. We have already begun the installation of the temporary factory of 120-meter concrete towers to supply the San Gabriel wind project, of 183MW, in La Araucanía.
Which elements characterize and/or distinguish your company? We are a company that cares about delivering excellent-quality equipment at the best price, and as such, we are an ideal supplier for highly-competitive markets as energy tenders. We also have a wide range of solutions that may be adapted to each client’s diverse projects and needs.
How important is NCRE participation in the Chilean electric system? The contribution of renewable energy to the system is crucial for the country to stop depending on imported resources, and, at the same time, to reach a clean energy matrix. In fact, they are so important that- in a not too distant future- they will no longer be “non-conventional”, supplying the country with clean, safe and sustainable energy.
Why would you recommend being an ACERA member? The importance of belonging to a guild representing the interests of the sector is fundamental. ACERA has positioned itself as a valid interlocutor within the industry, being able of generating the debate required to foster the development of our industry.

What are the main projects -or themes- you have been recently working on concerning NCRE or the environment? In case they are generation plans, where are the located and which are their main characteristics?Among the many NCRE projects we have worked on, we can highlight the Chañaral de Aceituno Wind Farm, the Lagunas Solar Park, the Vallenar Solar Park, the Quilapilun Solar Park, the Aguas Blancas Solar Park, the Sol de Atacama Photovoltaic Park, the Ovalle II Solar Park, the Willka Photovoltaic Park, the Peldehue Solar Park, and the Don Sebastian Solar Park.
Which elements characterize and/or distinguish your company? The company has developed values aimed at providing environmental consulting services with a sustainable development vision. Thus, every solution provided to the customers tries to balance environmental protection with economic development and equity, in a framework of social harmony and respect for the communities involved.
How important is NCRE participation in the Chilean electric system? One of the advantages of this kind of centrals is their zero or low greenhouse emissions, with the subsequent positive impact on the environment. The advance of NCRE in the country provides a 100% viable energy solution versus energy megaprojects with a high environmental impact, avoiding the reliance on a unique source of energy and diversifying the matrix.
Why would you recommend being an ACERA member? ACERA plays a key role in communicating the multiple benefits of NCRE investment for this country, its population and those who carry out these projects. It is essential to have an entity capable of centralizing one vision and representing it in front of the country’s authorities and the stakeholders in general.
