Design Studio Method A Workshop with Boulder County

TONIGHT

HUH?

…a Lean UX method that helps multidisciplinary teams come up with a lot of ideas to solve a well-framed problem.

multidisciplinary teams +

a lot of ideas

maybe you’ve heard…

“MY IDEAS ARE BEST”

“I’LL JUST FIGURE IT OUT”

“MY IDEAS DON’T MATTER”

“I NEED SPACE TO SKETCH”

???

“I’LL START WITH PIXELS”

1. Generate a lot of ideas quickly

2.Create a shared understanding of the problem

3.Allow for ideas from various perspectives

4.Create a culture of ownership around the future product vision

WHY DO THIS?

I. Knowledge Sharing

II.Sketching

III.Presentation

IV.Critique

V. Iteration

FIVE MAJOR PARTS

1. Present the problem*

2. Discuss research findings, personas, customer goals,

business goals, market opportunities, challenges, etc.

*Needs to be prepared ahead of time

OUR SCENARIOAdam (our persona) is riding to work and encounters a broken glass kombucha* bottle on the shoulder. He swerves to avoid it and is worried that it could be dangerous for other riders.

Find a way for Adam to report the hazard to BoCo so crews can clean it up.

* No worries, the kombucha was organic, vegan and unharmed.

OK, Sketch 6 DIFFERENT ideas…

You have 6 Minutes…

GO!

I’ll bet your first idea isn’t your best

Time kills the censor

You got this!

HOW’D IT GO?

PART III - PRESENTATION*

• Choose your strongest concept (could be parts of each) • Tie concept back to goals and persona • Take ONE MINUTE to pitch your idea

*This typically takes 5 minutes per person. This is condensed.

PART IV - CRITIQUE*• Everyone is equal (as one person speaks, others listen) • Don’t try to problem-solve (that’s for the next round) • Ask questions as needed • Reflect back on the persona and goals

*This typically takes 5-10 minutes per person. This is condensed.

OK, Sketch ONE idea based on the feedback you received

You have 10 Minutes…

GO!

It’s ok to steal and borrow :)

It’s one page though - details are ok now

You got this!

PRESENT + CRITIQUE

NOW, THE FINAL TEAM - GENERATED CONCEPT

• Add your team name to the top of the page

• Tell your story through visuals and text if needed

• Remember to solve for both the business and customer needs

ANY VOLUNTEERS?

• The output of the workshop is NOT the final solution

• Document and synthesize all of the concepts to identify the best opportunities for moving forward

• Begin building prototypes to test with customers
