Honor Code
The Briar Woods High School community embodies a spirit of mutual trust and intellectual honesty
that is essential to the nature of the school. As members of this community we uphold the values of
honesty, integrity, responsibility, accountability, and respect the property of others.
An honor code is a physical representation of the values that our students should embody. In our
environment of mutual respect, we hope that our students will do the right thing even when no one
is looking. Our desire is for our students to be successful while being trustworthy. The honor code
is not meant as an imposition, but rather a guide for all students and faculty to follow. For these
reasons, Briar Woods High School will uphold the following Honor Code:
On My Honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this test, quiz, or
assignment.
This is to be written and signed by students on all assignments that are handed in for a grade (unless
otherwise directed by the teacher). Refusal to comply with the written and signed pledge will result
in denial of credit for the assignment.
The functions of the Honor Code are to communicate the meaning and importance of academic
honesty to all students of the school and to maintain a high standard of conduct in academic affairs.
The Honor Code is a physical representation of the values that all Briar Woods students should
embody.
Our expectation at Briar Woods is that students will not engage in the following unacceptable
behaviors:
A: Cheating
An honorable student understands that cheating includes the actual giving or
receiving of any work other than his/her own. Such acts include, but are not limited to, copying
from other student(s), talking during a test or quiz, passing test or quiz information, unauthorized
use of study aids/notes/books/data/phones, etc.
B: Plagiarism
A student with integrity understands that plagiarism includes the copying of the
language, structure, programming, ideas and/or thoughts of another and passing off the same as your
own original work. Such acts include, but are not limited to, having a parent or another person write
an assignment ( including the purchase of works on-line) or do a project which is then submitted as
one’s own work; failing to use proper documentation and bibliography ( verbatim or paraphrased).
―Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or ideas without giving proper credit, or any credit at all,
to the writer of the original.‖ (A Guide to MLA Documentation, 1999)
C: Falsification/Lying/Fabrication
A student of good character knows that these include statements of any untruth,
either orally or in writing, with respect to any circumstances relevant to one’s academic work, or
attempts thereof. Such acts include, but are not limited to, forgery of official signatures, tampering
with official records, adding/deleting/manipulating information on academic work, changing an
examination or other academic work after the testing period or due date of the assignment, lying or
failing to give complete information to a teacher.

D: Stealing/Theft
A student who mutually respects other members of the Briar Woods community
will always respect the personal property of others at all times. Stealing is the intentional taking of
the property (including school property) of another without the owner’s consent or permission. The
prohibition of theft includes personal and academic property of others. This shall also include any
damage to personal or school property. If a violation occurs the following procedures will take
place:
1. The infraction is reported to the administration.
2. The penalty includes up to a suspension from school.
3. The School Resource Officer is notified.
4. Depending on the value of the property/damages, criminal charges may be filed.
Teachers’ Responsibilities:
1. Commit to the principles of the BW Honor Code.
2. Clearly outline and define unacceptable behaviors within the teacher’s course.
3. Address the degree to which students may collaborate on the completion of assignments,
making distinctions where necessary as to assignment types.
4. Clearly outline the responsibility each group member must bear for a collaborative project.
5. Address the use of study aids in course work.
6. Facilitate student discussion on honesty, integrity, and character.
7. Teachers have the discretion to implement the honor code in a given incident as they see
fit.
8. When a teacher believes an infraction of the Honor Code has occurred they must gather the
evidence at hand and meet with an administrator. Collectively the teacher and
administrator must concur that a violation has happened in order to proceed with the
procedures under the first offense.
Students’ Responsibilities:
1. Commit to the principles of the BW Honor Code.
2. A student who has committed an Honor Code infraction is obligated to report that
infraction to a teacher/administrator.
3. A student who has believed he/she has witnessed an Honor Code infraction is obligated to
confront the individual and attempt to persuade him/her to turn themselves in to a
teacher/administrator. If the accused individual(s) does not turn themselves in, then the
witness is obligated to inform a teacher/administrator.
If a student violates the Honor Code, the following actions may take place:
Possible Consequences:
1. The student will receive a ―0‖ (zero) on the assignment without an opportunity for
make-up work. Teachers have the right to give a zero. Teachers do have the
discretion to allow an opportunity for make-up work.
2. The teacher will inform the student’s parents of the infraction.
3. The student’s guidance counselor will be notified.
4. Honor Societies will be notified. In accordance with the honor societies’ by-laws and
national charters, a student may be removed from membership.
5. Refer the incident to the administration.
6. When infractions occur, administrators have the following options at their disposal:

a. Meet with the student.
b. Record the incident in the student’s comprehensive file.
c. Other disciplinary action may take place by the administrator in regards to the
seriousness of the infraction. This can include Saturday School, In School
Restriction, or other actions deemed necessary.

University.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Student Behavior
Students assume the responsibility of being active participants in creating a positive academic and
social environment at BWHS. The expectations are that students will conduct themselves in a
manner that reflects respect for themselves and others, promotes school citizenship, and contributes
to the achievement of all members of the BRIAR WOODS HIGH SCHOOL community.
Academic Information
BWHS provides outstanding educational opportunities for its students. Teachers, counselors, and
support staff are committed to helping each student become successful. It is vitally important for
each student to prepare for a successful and enjoyable high school experience by careful planning
and goal setting. It is essential to work closely with counselors and to refer to the Program of
Studies booklet.
Guidance
The guidance office is staffed by a team of professional counselors and a career specialist. The
guidance program is designed to promote academic-educational, personal-social, and career
development. As an integral part of the school program, counseling and guidance build a
foundation for learning based on positive attitudes toward school and learning, personal
responsibility, respect for self and others, and knowledge and skills for employment. Counselors’
assignments are based on the student’s last name. The guidance office is open daily from 8:15 a.m.
to 4:15 p.m.
The Career Resource Center is open to students and parents/guardians for research on colleges,
financial aid, career planning, and vocational training and opportunities. The career resource
coordinator is available to offer assistance Monday through Friday. Most of the materials in our
library may be checked out.
The guidance office encourages parents/guardians and students to take advantage of these resources.
Subject Load
Students in grades 9 through 11 are required to be enrolled in a minimum of seven (7) subjects or
their equivalent. Any variation requires the principal’s permission.
Eligibility for Interscholastic Competition
In order to be eligible to participate in any Virginia High School League competition, a student must
be currently enrolled in five (5) subjects for credit or the equivalent and must have passed five (5)
subjects for credit or the equivalent the previous semester.
Report Cards
Each nine weeks, each student will be given a report card. If indicated on the report card, additional
comment sheets are provided by subject teachers. These report cards must be taken home to the

students’ parents or guardians. The nine-week’ grade is composed of all evaluations made during
the grading period. These may include daily assignments, homework, quizzes, tests, projects, class
participation, and other instructional tasks. There are four nine-week grading periods in a year.
At the end of each semester, semester examinations are given in all subjects. The semester grade is
determined by averaging the examination grade and the grades for two nine-week marking periods.
The final year-end grade is determined by averaging the first and second semester grades. The final
year-end grade determines whether a student passes or fails a particular course (unless the course is
only a semester in length.)
Peer Tutoring
The Peer Tutoring program at Briar Woods is in its fifth year. It is the intent of Briar Woods Tutors
to provide students with a safe, comfortable, and successful learning environment; to assist students
in identifying their learning styles and developing appropriate study strategies; and, to collaborate
with students on learning course material. Mrs. Marilyn Clerkin and Mrs. Linda Gross are the
faculty coordinators. Students are encouraged to apply for a tutor should they need one, and forms
can be found in the Guidance office, Library, Room 307 and/or Mrs. Clerkin’s web page. For
additional information on the tutoring program, go to Mrs. Clerkin’s web page under ―Staff‖ located
on the Briar Woods home page. There is a link to the ―Tutor Request‖ form. Students who request
a peer tutor must attend tutoring sessions, or they are dropped from the program.
Honor Roll
Students who attain a B average or better (with no D’s, F’s or Incompletes) for each nine-week
grading period will earn placement on the honor roll. The honor roll is posted in the parent
newsletter at the end of each grading period.
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society was created to promote and recognize excellence in scholarship
leadership, service, and character. In order to be eligible for consideration, students must have
attained a 3.25 grade point average by the beginning of their junior year. Eligible students are
required to submit a list of their activities, which show they have provided service to their school
and community. Each faculty member is asked to provide information as to the worthiness of each
eligible student in the areas of leadership and character. A faculty council then evaluates all the
information received and selects students for membership in the National Honor Society. It should
be noted that in order to be selected, the candidate must be outstanding in the areas of leadership,
character and service
Library/Media Center
The mission of our library is to ensure student and staff access,
both physical and intellectual, to resources in a variety of formats;
to provide opportunities to attain and master skills necessary for effective use
of these resources; and to promote reading and lifelong learning.
Visiting the Library
The library/media center is open 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Thursday; the library is
open 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Friday. We can accommodate up to three classes for instruction

and use of library resources at one time. Students may come individually with passes during the
school day.
Using the library during school hours:
Please see hall pass information contained in this handbook/agenda.
Passes are required at all times during school hours (9:00 a.m. – 3:48 p.m.). Each student
must sign his/her own name at the circulation desk. Students are not permitted to sign each
other in.
o Lunch—agenda signed by staff in cafeteria
o Class—teachers may send up to five students from a class. Each student must
have his/her own signed agenda pass from the sending teacher.
o FLEX—pass issued by library as receiving teacher (just like all other FLEX
passes).
During FLEX the library also provides a place for peer tutoring. See Mrs. Clerkin for more
information.
Students may also obtain a FLEX pass from the Computer Lab staff (in 603) to use the
Computer Lab during FLEX.
Passes are NOT required before or after school. Students do not need to sign in before or after
school.
Collection and Circulation
We encourage students to become familiar with library resources and services. We also encourage
students and faculty to recommend titles.
The collection consists of more than 14,000 books, 100 audio books, 80 newspaper and magazine
titles, and a number of DVD and video titles. Students may also borrow books from any library in
Loudoun County Public Schools through interlibrary loan. Forms and assistance are available at the
circulation desk.
Nonfiction and fiction books may be checked out for two weeks. Reference books may be checked
out after 3:48 p.m. and returned before 9:00 a.m. the following school day. Magazines may be
checked out for one week. All materials except reference books may be renewed.
The library webpage provides access to the catalog, online subscription databases, electronic books,
pathfinders, citation sources, and additional links. Resources accessed through the webpage are
available from school or home, ―24/7.‖
The library has an active Library Club. Please contact the library staff for more information or to
join.
Copying/ Printing
A coin-operated copier is available for student use. Copies cost 5¢. The copier accepts dollar bills
and will provide change! Students may print using the computer network. Printing is restricted to
school assignments.

FLEX Period
FLEX occurs every B-Day during 6th
period. Students report back to their classes according to the
published FLEX schedule. FLEX guidelines are as follows:
FLEX is a student centered time that should include student generated activities.
All attendance rules and guidelines apply during the FLEX period.
Students are required to have a FLEX pass prior to the beginning of the FLEX period.
Students must obtain a FLEX pass from the requesting teacher in order to be
released from class (this includes passes issued to go to the library or the computer
lab).
No students should be in the hall for the first 20 minutes and last 20 minutes of FLEX.
Once a student FLEX’s out of a class, they are to remain at that location for the remainder
for the period.
No student should be in the halls during FLEX without a proper pass.
Technology/Computer Use
The information systems and Internet access available at BWHS are intended for educational
purposes only. The use of the information systems is a privilege, not a right.
The term ―information systems‖ as used herein includes, but is not limited to, the following:
hardware, software, communication lines and devices, graphing calculators, terminals, printers, CD-
ROM devices, tape drivers, scanners, and any computers.
The term ―users‖ as used herein includes all staff members, students, volunteers, parents, and other
individuals using any portion or the information systems (technology resources).
The information systems are operated for the benefit of all. All users are expected to assist in the
successful operation of the facilities. Users should not do, or attempt to do, anything that might
disrupt the operation of the network or equipment and/or interfere with the learning of students.
The following guidelines are intended to help users understand appropriate use. All access to
information systems shall be pre-approved by the principal or program manager. BRIAR WOODS
HIGH SCHOOL may restrict or terminate any user’s access, without prior notice, if such action is
deemed necessary to maintain computing availability and security for other users or the systems.
Disciplinary action may also be imposed as stated in the Loudoun County Public School Student
Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) handbook.
Ethical Conduct for Electronic Users
With the use of information resources and information technology, it is the responsibility of all
users:
to recognize and honor the intellectual property of others
to comply with legal restrictions regarding plagiarism and copyright by citing all information
sources utilized.
to restrict the use of information systems and resources to the mission or function of the school
system; the use of computer systems for personal use unrelated to the mission of the school
system or for private gain is prohibited.

to help maintain the integrity of the school information systems; deliberate tampering or
experimentation is not allowed. It is a violation to modify config.sys, autoexec.bat, system
folder, or control panel files, or any file that would alter the workstation/system settings,
without prior approval of the instructor or program manager.
Educational Use
The information systems are intended for educational purposes. Users are responsible for the ethical
and educational use of their network accounts.
No games are to be played at any time on any school computer.
Only school-related files are to be saved on accounts. Storing commercial software and/or
games or hidden files to accounts is not permitted.
Saving to the hard disk drive is granted only by permission of the network administrator.
Respect for Others
Users should respect the rights of others using a lab and/or network. Users are required to do the
following:
Use assigned workstation, if required by teacher.
Be considerate when using scarce resources.
Always log off workstations.
Avoid deliberately attempting to disrupt system performance and/or interfering with work of
another user.
Leave equipment and room in good condition for next user/class.
Respect for Security
Accounts on the systems at BWHS are considered secure, although absolute security of any data
cannot be guaranteed.
Use only your account/password. It is a violation to give access to your account to any other
user.
Users may not read, modify or remove files and/or mail owned by other users without prior
approval by the instructor or program manager.
Each account owner is responsible for all actions under his/her account.
Respect for Property
Software Installation:
Software may be installed on the school information systems (including all individual workstations)
only with prior approval of the network system administrator or program manager.
Software Copyright:
The only software to be used on systems in the school are those products for which the school owns
a valid license or the school may legally use.
Licensed/copyrighted software is not generally available for borrowing and may be used at
other sites only with approval of the network administrator.
Users shall not download copyrighted software from the Internet or further transmit it in any
form without compliance with all terms of a pre-authorized licensing agreement.
Infringement or violations of U.S. or international copyright laws or restrictions will not be
tolerated.
Any attempt to circumvent the licensing control or to copy software is prohibited.

Hardware:
Report equipment problems immediately to the instructor.
Leave workstations and peripherals in their designated places.
Keep work areas neat and clean; gum, food, or drink, or personal grooming in any area where
computers are located is not allowed.
Do not remove any parts of computers or peripherals (i.e. letters off keyboards, mouse parts,
etc.).
Adult supervision is mandatory.
Mail Usage
Students do not have electronic communication (including e-mail) privileges unless authorized by
the administration.
Responsibilities:
Electronic communication (e-mail) is to be restricted to appropriate communication and must
comply with BWHS SR&R standards.
All mail communication must reflect the sender’s account ID.
Make sure any mail you receive does not contain pornographic material, inappropriate
information or text-encoded files that are potentially dangerous to the integrity of the hardware
on the school premises.
Real-time messaging, bulletin boards and/or on-line chat may only be used with permission of
the instructor.
Do no reveal personal information in correspondence with unknown parties.
Internet/World Wide Web Usage
The term ―Internet access‖ includes all methodologies used to connect to individual computer
networks around the world.
The term ―World Wide Web‖ (WWW) is an Internet service that organizes the information using
graphics and point-and-click technology. Each document can contain embedded reference to
images, audio, or other documents. Users can browse for information by following references. The
term ―home page‖ as used herein is a page of information accessible through the WWW. The page
can contain a mixture of graphics and text and can include embedded references to other such pages.
Responsibilities:
The user exercising his/her privilege to use the Internet, as an educational resource shall also accept
responsibility for all material received under his/her account. The purpose of Internet use at BRIAR
WOODS HIGH SCHOOL is to support research and education. All Internet use must comply with
this purpose as indicated in the LCPS Student’s Rights and Responsibilities handbook, the LCPS
Acceptable Use Agreement for Secondary Students, and the BWHS Technology/Computer Use
Policy. Users are prohibited from accessing portions of the Internet that do not comply with these
policies. Students are cautioned not to type personal information into any Internet/www site. Note:
Any infringement of this policy will result in disciplinary action that will include, but not be limited
to, termination of the user’s account.

Student Responsibilities
The following are in accordance with policies adopted by the Loudoun County School Board
and as such are not subject to exception:
Alcohol
Students shall not possess, distribute, use, or be under the influence of alcohol on school property,
including school buses, or during any school-sponsored activity at any time. Violation of this policy
for the first time will result in a ten day out-of-school suspension, three days which must be fulfilled
by attending a three-day Substance Abuse Education class sponsored by Loudoun County Public
Schools.
A second violation of this policy shall result in a ten day out-of-school suspension and assignment
to the Substance Abuse Education Program at Douglass Alternative School in accordance with the
rules governing that program. Any further violation of this policy may result in a recommendation
by the Principal for long-term suspension from school by the Superintendent or expulsion from
school by the School Board. Students suspected of being under the influence of alcohol may be
required to submit to a breath-analysis test.
For the purpose of this policy, the term ―alcohol‖ shall mean the product known as ethyl or grain
alcohol obtained by distillation of any fermented liquor, rectified either once or more often,
whatever the origin, synthetic ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol and denatured alcohol, or any other
form of alcohol.
The terms ―product or liquid‖ are intended to mean those terms in the broadest sense and shall
include such products as cough syrup (whether prescription or otherwise), mouthwash, extracts, and
any other such products or material, whether solid or liquid, which contain alcohol.
In addition, state law provides a fine of up to $500.00 and/or 6 months in jail for possession of
alcohol on school property.
Drugs
Students who are under the influence of drugs while under school authority or while on school
property, and students who possess drug paraphernalia (as defined in §18.2-265.1 of the Code of
Virginia) while under school authority or while on school property shall be subject to disciplinary
action, which may include assignment to the Substance Abuse Education Program as specified in
the Administrative Regulations to this policy, long term suspension from school, referral to the
School Board for expulsion in accordance with Policy §8-28, or such other action as may be deemed
appropriate by the Division Superintendent or the School Board.

School Responsibilities
Schools are responsible for maintaining an atmosphere conducive to learning and for protecting
students from illegal and harmful influences. Students have a responsibility to obey the laws and
school rules and to be free from the influence of drugs while in school. All members of the school
community are subject to the laws, and school personnel have the obligation to report suspected
violations of laws to proper authorities.
Student Responsibilities
Students are strictly prohibited from possessing, distributing, using, or being under the influence of
any drug (including anabolic steroids), and chemical substance that affects the brain or nervous
system, or any substance represented to be or believed to be a drug or chemical substance that
affects the brain or nervous system or from possession of any drug-related paraphernalia while
under school authority or on school property.
Possession or distribution of controlled substances, imitation controlled substances and marijuana,
all as defined in title 18.2 or the Code of Virginia, while under school authority, on school property,
or at a school-sponsored activity (as prohibited in § 18.2-255.2 of the Code of Virginia) is strictly
prohibited. Any student who brings a controlled substance, an imitation controlled substance, or
marijuana onto school property or to a school-sponsored activity or who possesses one or more of
the above while under school authority shall be expelled from school in accordance with Policy § 8-
28.
The School Board may determine, based on the facts of a particular case that special circumstances
exist and that other disciplinary action may be appropriate. If the School Board finds that special
circumstances exist, recommended action may include assignment to the Substance Abuse
Education Program as specified in the Administrative Regulations to this policy, long-term
suspension from school or such other action as may be deemed appropriate by the School Board.
This policy is applicable to students at all grade levels.
Students who are under the influence of drugs while under school authority or while on school
property and students who possess drug paraphernalia (as defined in § 18.2-26.5.1 of the Code of
Virginia) while under school authority or while on school property shall be subject to disciplinary
action, which may include assignment to the Substance Abuse Education Program as specified in
the Administrative Regulations to this policy, long-term suspension from school, referral to the
School Board for expulsion in accordance with Policy § 8-28, or such other action as may be
deemed appropriate by the Division Superintendent or the School Board.
Students are expected to cooperate with school personnel who are investigating violations of the
drug policy, including acceptance of school personnel’s right to conduct reasonable searches of
students’ personal belongings in accordance with Policy § 8-2 of the policies. Failure of any student
to permit such reasonable search will be considered in defiance of school authority and may result in
involuntary transfer, long-term suspension, or expulsion from school.
Publications or other printed matter which advocate the use of illegal drugs or the abuse of legal
drugs, or which portray such use or abuse as socially acceptable behavior, or which advertise the
sale of counterfeit or ―look alike‖ or ―act alike‖ drugs or drug-related paraphernalia are prohibited
from sale or distribution on school property. Any student selling or distributing such matter on
school property shall be subject to school discipline.

Tobacco Policy
The purpose of this policy is to educate students and parents about the health risks of tobacco,
effective methods for cessation of tobacco use, and the law pertaining to underage tobacco
possession.
Possession of tobacco products by students shall result in the following actions:
First Offense - Confiscation and one day of In-School Restriction.
Second Offense - Three days of In-School Restriction.
Third/Fourth Offense - Tobacco violation charges filed with Juvenile Court Offenses Services.
(18 year old students will be treated as additional offenses.)
Additional Offenses - Suspension for three days and charges filed if applicable.
Use of tobacco products by students shall result in the following actions:
First Offense - Three days of In-School Restriction and completion of a smoking
cessation project to include parental involvement.
Second/Third Offense - Tobacco violation charges filed with Juvenile Offenses Court Services.
(18 year old students will be treated as additional offenses.)
Additional Offenses - Suspension for three days and charges filed if applicable.
Laser Pointers
Students are prohibited from possessing laser pointers on any public school property, school bus, or
attending any school function or activity. Any student found to possess a laser pointer in violation
of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action and seizure of the device by school officials.
Weapons
Possession or use of a weapon by a student while under the control or supervision of school system
personnel is prohibited. The term ―weapon‖ is intended to be construed broadly and includes any
instrument or device which, by its design or use, is capable of causing injury, harm, or threat of
injury or harm to the physical well-being of another person. A ―weapon‖ as used in this policy
includes, but is not limited to the following:
Category A:
1) Any stun weapon or taser;
2) Any pistol shotgun, rifle, revolver, or other weapon designed or intended to propel a
missile of any kind whether loaded or unloaded, whether operable or inoperable;
3) Any dirk, Bowie knife, switchblade, ballistic knife, or razor, sling shot, spring stick, brass
or metal knuckles, or blackjack;
4) Any flailing instrument consisting of two or more rigid parts connected in such a manner as
to allow the to swing freely, which may be known as nunchahka, nunchuck, nunchaku,
shuriken, or fighting chain;
5) Any disc or whatever configuration, having at least two points or pointed blades, and which
is designed to be thrown as a throwing star or oriental dart;
6) Any weapons of the like kind as those enumerated in items 1 through 5 hereof;

7) Any weapon, including a starter gun, which will, or is designed, or may readily be
converted, to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or the frame or receiver of any
such weapon;
8) Any firearm muffler or firearm silencer; or
9) Any ―destructive device‖ defined as (i) any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas, bomb,
grenade, rocket; (ii) any weapon including shotguns; and (iii) any combination of parts
either designed or intended for use in converting any device into any destructive device
described in this subsection and from which a destructive device may be readily assembled.
―Destructive device‖ shall not include any device which is not designed or redesigned for
use as a weapon and which is redesigned for use as a signaling, pyrotechnic, line-throwing,
safety, or other similar device.
Category B:
1) Any knife or other instrument or device, not included in Category A, having as a part
thereof a blade designed to cut or a point designed to penetrate;
2) Any instrument or device, not included in Category A, which has as one of its designed
purposes use thereof as a weapon;
3) Any chemical or chemical compound that produces an adverse effect on the normal
functions of the human body;
4) Any instrument, device or substance not included in Category A, which could injure, harm,
endanger, or induce fear in another person, including ―toy‖ or ―look alike‖ weapons.
Penalties for Violation
Any student who violates this policy with respect to a Category A weapon shall be expelled from
Loudoun County Public Schools (The School Board may, however, determine, based on the facts of
the particular case, that special circumstances exist and another disciplinary action or term of
expulsion is appropriate). Any student in violation of any other terms of this policy shall be subject
to expulsion from Loudoun County Public Schools, or to such lesser disciplinary action, including
long-term suspension, as may be deemed appropriate.
Dress and Grooming
The primary responsibility for the proper dress and grooming of students rests with the parent or
guardian of each student.
The school has the responsibility, however, to see that the cleanliness, dress, and grooming of
students does not present a danger to the health or safety of others or prevents them from performing
regular required school activities, does not cause a disruption of the orderly functioning of the
school, and does not cause excessive wear or damage to school property.
The following guidelines will be observed by all students:
a. Clothing that exposes the midriff, chest, shoulders, back, or buttocks is inappropriate for
school and is not permitted. Shorts, dresses, and skirts cannot be shorter than mid-thigh.
b. Beach attire may not be worn to school.
c. Undergarments may not be worn as outer garments or be overly visible.
d. Clothing or hair that is detrimental to the safety, health, or general welfare of a student is
not allowed.
e. Shoes must be worn at all times.
f. See-through clothing may not be worn.
g. Clothing may not contain obscene material or be sexually suggestive, promote the use of
alcohol or illegal drugs, or advocate the violation of any law or school policy.
h. Wallet chains are prohibited.
i. Head apparel such as hats, headbands, bandanas, hoods, etc. may not be worn.

j. Clothing with improper, suggestive, obscene, vulgar, lewd or racial language is
inappropriate.
k. Clothing which advertises illegal substances such as tobacco, drugs and alcohol is
inappropriate.
l. Sunglasses may not be worn in the building.
m. Pajamas, pajama pants, bedroom slippers and other sleeping apparel may not be worn in
the school building.
Students who violate this policy are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including
suspension from school.
Harassment/Threats
Harassment or threats to the well-being of a student or a staff member either verbally or in writing
will face serious disciplinary action. This action could include expulsion from school. In addition,
charges will be filed through the police department.
Verbal Abuse
Verbal abuse of staff members will not be tolerated. Any student who verbally abuses a staff
member (including profanity) will face serious disciplinary consequences, up to and including
possible expulsion from school. In addition, charges will be filed through the police department.
Cheating
Honesty in your work is a reflection of your character. Students found guilty of cheating will be
given a grade of zero on the test, examination, or work involved, and may receive in-school
restriction or other disciplinary action. In addition, the student’s parents/guardians will be notified.

School Jurisdiction
Students are responsible for their behavior from the time they leave their house in the morning until
the time they return home after school. During this period of time, students are considered to be
under school jurisdiction.
Display of Affection and Sexual Behaviors
Embracing, kissing, and sexual behaviors will not be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action
up to and including suspension from school.

Gangs
Under no circumstances are students permitted to reflect any behaviors which are tied to gang
activity. This pertains to dress, signs, headgear (including head bands) and tattoos. The school
works closely with the School Resource office and School Safety and Security Specialist regarding
trends and activities.
Sportsmanship at All School Activities
(Home and Away)
BRIAR WOODS HIGH SCHOOL is a member of the Virginia High School League.
Unsportsmanlike acts of any kind are prohibited at all activities. Failure to comply with the rules
and regulations pertaining to sportsmanship could lead to our school being placed on probation by
the Virginia High School League. Failure to display good sportsmanship at school activities could
lead to suspension from school activities and/or other appropriate discipline.
Restrooms
Help us keep them clean by disposing of trash in trash cans and flushing after use. Please be
considerate of others.
School Store
The Falcons' Nest is located in room 401 and is open before school. A variety of Falcon clothing,
school supplies, and spirit products are available
In-School Restriction
―ISR‖ is an abbreviation for ―In-School Restriction‖. The term ―restriction‖ applies in that many
privileges afforded during ―regular‖ class attendance are denied. While in I.S.R., students may not
attend after-school functions including athletic practices UNTIL THE DAY AFTER they complete
the I.S.R. assignment
.
Saturday School
SATURDAY SCHOOL (SAS) meets from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. No bus service is available
for students participating in SAS. Students assigned to SAS must bring appropriate schoolwork
and/or reading material. Students should also come prepared to participate in community service
projects, which may include manual labor. Students who do not come prepared, arrive late, leave
early, sleep and talk or otherwise disrupt SAS will be sent home and/or assigned appropriate
additional penalties. Failure to report to SAS will result in further disciplinary action.
Suspension
A student may be suspended by an administrator for behavior which interferes with the education of
others, prevents the orderly operation of the school, threatens any individual’s physical well-being,
or knowingly violates a rule for which the penalty is suspension. Such suspension shall not exceed
ten school days. Cause for suspension shall include, but shall not be limited to, any of the
following:
1. willful or continued disobedience of school rules and regulations or school personnel;

2. defiance of the authority of any teacher, principal, or other person having authority in the
school; including not giving your name when requested;
3. conduct that endangers or threatens the physical well-being of other students or school
personnel including laser pointers.
4. physical assault upon another person, including fighting and nonconsensual touching;
5. willful damage to school property or that of another person;
6. theft or attempted theft of school property or the personal property of another person;
7. participation in unauthorized occupancy of any school property in violation of a directive,
or failure to leave promptly any school property after having been directed to do so by the
principal or other person in charge;
8. use or possession of any weapon or explosives, including fireworks, on school property;
9. violation of attendance regulations, including leaving school without permission
10. cursing or verbal abuse of another person or directing obscene gestures to another person;
11. willful interruption or disruption of any school or part thereof;
12. any threat to bomb, burn, or damage in any manner a school building or other school
property or the property of another person;
13. violation of the alcohol policy;
14. violation of the drug policy;
15. violation of the tobacco policy;
16. lying or giving false information, verbally or in writing, to a school employee, including
forgery or the knowing use of forged writing;
17. failure to abide by restrictions or punishments of a lesser nature.
18. violation of any law of the Commonwealth while on school property or of any policy for
which the prescribed punishment is suspension.
Present School Board Policy states that students shall be involuntarily transferred by the
Division Superintendent from one school to another when they have committed acts specified
in Policy 8-27, Subsection A, and normal disciplinary measures, including suspension from
school, have failed to correct such behavior.
Absences
If you are absent, you must bring a written note signed by your parent or guardian explaining your
absence. This must be presented before school begins to the Attendance Secretary, who is located
in the main foyer. If you do not bring a note to explain your absence, one is due the next day.
General Attendance Policies
The Commonwealth of Virginia has compulsory attendance laws for all students less than eighteen
years of age. It is the primary responsibility of the parents or guardians to have their son or
daughter in attendance at all times. The only absences permitted by law are as follows:
1. medical appointment
2. personal illness
3. death in immediate family
4. summons to appear in court
5. religious holidays
The above also applies to tardies to school and early dismissals. The principal is given certain
discretionary powers in extenuating circumstances or emergency situations to grant permission to be
absent or to excuse tardies for reasons other than those listed above. It is the policy of BRIAR
WOODS HIGH SCHOOL to grant such permission under the discretionary statute only when a real
emergency exists or when extreme extenuating circumstances make it the sensible thing to do.

Make-Up of Work Missed Because of Absence
You are responsible for initiating immediate action with your teacher when you have been absent.
Usually, for non-suspension absences a reasonable amount of time is considered to be one day for
each day missed.
Students returning from suspension absences are expected to have work completed upon return
unless special arrangements are made with the teacher in advance.
It is important to notify the teacher as soon as possible if there are circumstances warranting special
consideration.
If you miss a previously announced test, quiz, paper, or project, you must be prepared to make up
the activity or turn it in upon return unless you have cleared it with the teacher.
If you are present for part of the day, previously announced assignments are due that day.
If you do not make up the work in the allotted time, you will receive a failing grade.
Attendance and Activities
If a student is absent from school, he or she cannot be an active participant in a school-sponsored
activity that day. For example, a student absent during the school day could not practice or
participate in band, debate, drama, sports, etc. that day. In order to participate in an extra-curricular
activity on any given day, a student must report to school no later than 9:15 a.m. Any student sent
home because of illness will not be permitted to return to school in the afternoon or evening to
participate in an extra-curricular activity.
Early Dismissals
Once a student arrives on school grounds whether by walking, cycling, riding in a car or on a bus,
he or she may not leave school grounds before the end of the day without prior written permission.
Students violating this rule are subject to suspension from school. Students may be officially
dismissed during the school day for one of the reasons given for excused absences. A student
desiring to leave the school grounds during the school day must present a note from his parents or
guardian to the attendance officials in the foyer prior to homeroom. The note is to contain the
reason and time of departure, the student’s full name, and the signature and telephone number of the
parent or guardian writing the note. The student will receive an Early Dismissal Pass if the request
is excusable. The names of students having early dismissals will appear on the daily absentee sheet
with the time of departure noted. Students who fail to report to the attendance officials to obtain
an early dismissal slip will not be released until dismissal is verified by an administrator.
Early dismissals cannot be arranged over the phone. They must be arranged through a
written note from the parent or guardian.
Students must sign out in the attendance office before leaving for an early dismissal. Failure to sign
out may result in disciplinary action. Students returning to school on the same day that they have an
early dismissal must sign in at the foyer before returning to class. Students who do not return must
turn in their completed Early Dismissal slips the next day. These rules apply to students regardless
of age. Students who are age eighteen or older are not exempted from dismissal rules or other
school rules and regulations.

Tardy Policy
Students are expected to attend school on time. Tardies will be excused for the same reasons listed
for excused absences.
Promptness to class is essential for maintaining instructional consistency which promotes
learning.
Students will be allowed 2 unexcused tardies per nine weeks. The third tardy to class will
result in Saturday School. Subsequent tardies will result in disciplinary action.
Valuables/Thefts
Large amounts of money, walkmans, Ipods, cell phones, MP 3 players, etc. should not be brought to
school. If these items are brought to school, they should be kept in the locker, or in a safe
place, for use before or after school only. Students should not leave valuables unsecured.
THE SCHOOL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS.
General Procedures
General administrative procedures and policies are outlined below. Failure to abide by these
regulations may result in denial of the privilege involved, disciplinary action or both.
Student Lockers
All lockers (gym and hall) are provided by the school as a convenience to the student. They do not
become the exclusive property of the student. They are provided for the express purpose of keeping
clothing, books, lunches, and other materials necessary for the school day.
The principal or his designee reserves the right to enter any student locker at any time when he feels
it necessary and proper to do so. Lockers are expected to be kept clean and neat. Writing on lockers
is not permitted. At the conclusion of the school year each locker will be opened and inspected for
damage, writing, or decals. If the locker is not left in satisfactory condition, the student will be
assigned a deficiency. Report cards will not be issued until the problem is resolved. Students are not
to tell anyone the combinations to their lockers. Large amounts of money or items or great value
should not be kept in lockers. The school cannot assume responsibility for items taken from
lockers.
Remember: If you give the combination of your locker to another student, the security of that
locker has been violated. You are responsible for everything that is stored in your locker.

Student Parking Facilities
Parking facilities are provided at BRIAR WOODS HIGH SCHOOL as a convenience to students
who drive to school. Parking on school grounds is a privilege that may be granted by the principal
to students who meet the following conditions:
1. Each student must register any licensed vehicle he or she drives to school in the Security
Office and purchase a school parking permit each year.
2. Parking permits must be displayed at all times.
3. Students must park in the area designated for student parking only.
4. Once on school grounds, students will not be allowed to leave until school is dismissed or
unless permission has been obtained in the school office.
5. Students may not sit in parked vehicles or linger in the parking area.
6. Students may not return to their cars during the day without a pass from the office.
7. Traffic laws, school regulations, and normal safety procedures must be observed at all
times.
8. Cars without permits are not permitted on campus.
9. You are responsible for the conduct of others and the content of your vehicle while on
school grounds and while driving to and from school.
Violations of parking rules will result in suspension or revoking of parking privileges. Those
students without a parking sticker who park on school grounds are subject to disciplinary action by
the school administration.
Student Medication
A. General
All medicines should be administered to students by their parents/guardian at home if at all possible.
Medicine administered at school will strictly follow this policy. Any student who fails to follow this
policy or whose parents fail to follow this policy will be excluded from school until compliance is
assured. The principal shall determine whether or not there is compliance with the provision of this
policy.
If it is necessary that a medication be given during the school hours, the following regulations must
be followed:
Medication must be brought to school in the original container with appropriate label intact.
Parent/guardian must bring medication to the nurse, health aide, or designee. Medication will be
kept in a locked medicine area of the clinic.
B. Prescription Medication
The nurse/health aide must have written instructions from the physician in order to administer
prescription medications. These should include:
Student’s name
Name and purpose of medicine
Dosage and time of administration
End date for administering the medicine
Parent/guardian signature giving permission to administer medicine and to contact physician if
necessary
Physician’s signature

All prescription medicine must be in the original pharmacy bottle with proper label containing the
student’s name, medication, dosage, and instructions for administration. If you ask, the pharmacy
will give you an extra bottle for liquid or tablets with the proper amount of medicine for school.
C. Non-Prescription Medicine
Must be in an original package with the name of the medicine and instructions.
Must have a signed and dated note on form H6 from the parent/guardian regarding when
and how much medicine to administer.
Will be given according to the amount listed on the package for your child’s age and weight unless
the doctor’s orders on a medication form indicate differently.
D. Emergency Life Saving Measures
The parent/guardian of any student that has a condition that would require emergency, life-saving
medication or other measures must inform the principal of the condition and provide instructions
from the attending physician on measures to be taken, including administering any medication.
These instructions should cover measures to be taken while the student may be on a school bus or
other times when medicine is not immediately available.
E. Safekeeping of Medication
All medication must be kept by the school nurse or the principal in a secure, locked place known by
and accessible to any person who may have to administer life-saving medication. Students may not
carry or keep medications in their lockers, sport bags, book bags, or on their persons. If a student
has a chronic disease or allergy that requires an emergency dose of life-saving medication to be kept
on his person at all times, a statement from the attending physician on the type of medication,
dosage, and method of administration should be provided for the school nurse. Parents may wish to
leave a second dose of this medication in the custody of the school nurse. Parents are asked to call
the school nurse if they have any questions about the administration of student medications.
Children who have fevers should be kept at home for at least 24 hours after fever subsides.
Be sure to keep emergency contact phone numbers and information up-to-date so that we
can reach you if your child is ill or injured.
Student Telephone Calls
A phone is available in the main office for emergency calls only. THE USE OF CELL PHONES
IS PROHIBITED DURING SCHOOL HOURS ANYWHERE IN THE BUILDING.
Visitors
All visitors to BRIAR WOODS HIGH SCHOOL must report directly to the main office to sign in
and receive a Visitor’s pass. Students may not bring friends from other schools to attend class with
them unless prior approval is obtained from the principal to do so. Permission will only be granted
in a case where a teacher feels that a visit by a student will be educationally beneficial to the
students in the class.

Bus Expectations
Bus safety is everyone’s responsibility. Students are expected to behave appropriately on buses and
at bus stops at all times. Failure to act responsibly will result in disciplinary consequences which
can include denial of the privilege to ride school transportation.
Cafeteria
Students must report directly to the cafeteria with their class at the scheduled time and remain in the
cafeteria. Lunches must be eaten in the cafeteria. Students are required to return their lunch trays
and dispose of trash in the appropriate containers. Students will not be released from the cafeteria
until the bell rings Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during the lunch period or
go to any areas other than those outlined above.
Senior Privileges
Seniors will be excused for lunch two minutes before other students.
Seniors may take their lunch to Senior Court or remain in the cafeteria.
School Facilities/Vandalism
BRIAR WOODS HIGH SCHOOL and the equipment it contains are provided at great expense by
the taxpayers of Loudoun County. Every student should refrain from defacing or destroying school
property. Each student should make every effort to encourage his friends and fellow students to
respect school property. We hope that everyone will develop pride in keeping our school clean and
the furniture in good repair. Any student who chooses to deface or destroy any school property is
subject to immediate suspension from school and will be responsible for restitution.
Clinic Procedures
Clinic Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
When a student is too sick to remain in class, he or she is too sick to remain in school. Students
may remain in the clinic for one class period only. If a student needs to be absent from classes
for more than one period, parents will be contacted to arrange for the student to be sent home.
Students must have a pass to be seen in the clinic. Students reporting to the clinic without a
pass will be issued a tardy slip – emergencies excepted.
The nurse cannot treat a student without an emergency card on file.
The clinic stocks only adult-strength generic Tylenol (acetaminophen). In order for your child
to receive acetaminophen upon request, the emergency card must be checked off and signed.
Any student requiring chewable acetaminophen or Advil must have a parent bring it from home
with a completed medication form.
If your student has severe bee sting or food allergies and requires Epi-pens, please be sure you
send them to the clinic as soon as school begins with completed medication forms.
All students with asthma that need to use inhalers at school must pick up medication and inhaler
forms. Forms must be completed by your health provider and parent and returned to the nurse
as soon as possible.
All physical education excuses authorized by parents are to be given directly to the PE
teacher. All physical education excuses authorized by a physician are to be given to the nurse.

Distribution of Literature or Other Materials
Anyone wishing to distribute literature, information, or other materials on school property must first
have permission of the principal. Posters for club activities must be approved by the Activity
Coordinator.
Disruptive Behavior
Any behavior which threatens the orderly, safe operation of a class or the school is prohibited. This
includes physical and verbal disruption.
Textbooks
Textbooks are furnished free by the county. Students are completely responsible for books that are
lost or damaged and will be charged accordingly. Students must sign their names in all books which
are issued to them.
Remaining After School for an Activity
Students are to leave the school grounds immediately after school is dismissed. Students may
remain in the building for an activity or to work only if under the supervision of a teacher or
designated representative of the administration. The 3:48 bell indicates the closing of school for all
students not in supervised activities. Students will not be allowed to enter the building once the
designated activity has ended.
Bus Transportation
Students who ride on a school bus in the morning must return home on the bus in the afternoon
unless excused in writing by the office. Such permission will not be granted unless a written request
from parents or guardians are submitted or an adult member of the immediate family calls or comes
to the school to meet the student. Students will not be permitted to go home on a bus or in a car
pool to spend the night with a friend unless written permission is given by the parent or guardian.
Buses depart Briar Woods promptly at 4:00 p.m.
Hall Passes
ANY STUDENT EXCUSED FROM A CLASS MUST USE THE STUDENT HALL PASS
FORMS IN THE BACK OF THIS HANDBOOK. No hall passes will be issued for the first 20
minutes and last 20 minutes of a class period unless it is an emergency. The form must be
signed, dated, and timed by the excusing teacher. Students will not be excused from study hall
without a pass from a teacher or the guidance office. Students found in the halls without properly
authorized hall passes will be assigned detention. Repeated violations can result in suspensions. If
this handbook is lost, you must purchase an additional copy for $5.00.
Athletic Program
Virginia High School League (VHSL) – Includes athletics, various drama, debate, forensics and
academic competitions Member of Group AA, Region II, Dulles District.
Athletes must read, sign, and abide by the Loudoun Student Athletic Handbook’s rules and
procedures.

Eligibility for VHSL Activities
*Must have been enrolled in a minimum of 5 subjects and passed 5 subjects the previous semester
*Cannot have been enrolled for more than 8 consecutive semesters
*Must not have reached the 19th
birthday on or before the first day of August of the year
participating
*Must have completed a VHSL physical form
*Sportsmanship – We take pride in promoting first class athletic programs and in supporting the
VHSL Sportsmanship Code. Student participants and spectators are expected to demonstrate good
sportsmanship by following the VHSL sportsmanship standards. We cheer for our teammates and
fellow students in a positive way and do not show negative, taunting, or disrespectful behavior in
any way. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action which
can include removal from participation and/or attendance at events.

*Coaches conduct preseason meeting for parents and students to review expectations, training rules,
and sportsmanship.
Student Responsibilities *Follow the rules.
*Turn in forms on time.
*Be sure to update your emergency information regularly.
*Inform the attendance secretary of address and phone changes.
*All money collected for school activities should be turned in to the appropriate staff member
immediately. Under NO circumstances should money be taken out of the building.
*All soft drink containers must be stored in lockers. Glass containers are not permitted. Drink and
vending machines are turned off during the day and should be used only at designated times.
Fire Drills/Emergency Evacuations
Students must follow procedures by evacuating the building in an orderly manner and remaining
with their class. If separated from your class, report to the nearest staff member and identify
yourself.
ERP – This is our lockdown drill where students and teachers move away from the door and
windows and the teacher locks the door. Students must vacate the halls and bathrooms and report to
the nearest classroom. We must account for you.
Make up work due to absence
*You are responsible for initiating immediate action with YOUR TEACHER WHEN YOU HAVE
BEEN ABSENT. Usually, for non-suspension absences a reasonable amount of time is considered
to be one day for each day missed. Students returning from suspension absences are expected to
have work completed upon return unless special arrangements are made with the teacher in advance.
It is important to notify the teacher as soon as possible if there are circumstances warranting special
consideration. If you miss a previously announced test, quiz, paper, or project, you must be
prepared to make up the activity or turn it in upon return unless you have cleared it with the teacher.
If you are present for part of the day, previously announced assignments are due that day. If you do
not make up the work in the allotted time, you will receive a failing grade.

Unauthorized Area
It is expected that you understand the importance of being where you’re supposed to be when
you’re supposed to be there. Being in unauthorized areas raises suspicions and can result in
disciplinary consequences. Students may not linger in or go out to parking lots without permission.
Hallways/Running/Loitering
Students may not loiter in halls after bells have rung. Running in the halls endangers everyone;
therefore it is NOT permitted.

Homework
Homework is designed as a meaningful way to reinforce previous learning, to practice skills, to
review, to prepare for future learning, or to enhance learning. Homework has a specific purpose. It
is not intended to be busy work or to replace important classroom instruction; therefore all students
are expected to complete homework on time in preparation for class. You need to realize that
failure to do homework can hurt your preparation and lower your grade.
Insurance
Students and parents are encouraged to purchase student insurance. Information is sent home at the
beginning of the year. Unfortunately, accidents do happen and the school’s insurance does not
routinely cover student accidents.
FLEX Period
FLEX occurs every B-Day during 6th
period. Students report back to their classes according to the
published FLEX schedule. FLEX guidelines are as follows:
FLEX is a student centered time that should include student generated activities.
All attendance rules and guidelines apply during the FLEX period.
Students are required to have a FLEX pass prior to the beginning of the FLEX period.
Students must have a FLEX pass from the requesting teacher in order to be released from
class. This pass must filled out in full and signed by the requesting teacher first.
Students must sign out of their assigned FLEX class.
No students should be in the hall for the first 20 minutes and last 20 minutes of FLEX.
Once a student FLEX’s out of a class, they are to remain at that location for the remainder
for the period.
No student should be in the halls during FLEX without a proper pass.
