In England people remember that Jesus Christ was born in the town of Bethlehem, about 2000 years ago.

Today, Christmas is a very important time in the Christian year, it is also very important to those,

who don’t go to church. It is a time for buying and giving presents, having parties, and being with

family.

People start to decorate their shops, streets and houses.

Families buy christmas trees, put them inside the house and put colourful

decorations on them.

Santa Claus often comes when the children are sleeping.

Children leave the stockings for Santa Claus by the fireplace when they go to bed. In Britain Santa Claus is

usually called Father Christmas.

The Christmas Holiday begins on 24th December: Christmas Eve. People stop work. Christmas dinner is in the afternoon. It is the biggest meal of the day. Before they start to eat, people pull crackers. They make a loud noise and have a small game inside.

Christmas Day,25th December, is a holiday. Children wake up very early and open their presents aroud the

tree.

Dinner is usually turkey with lots of winter vegetables and then a Christmas pudding. People spend this time

at home with their family or visiting family.

Many people go to church at midnight on Christmas Eve. They hear the Christmas story and sing carols.

At three o'clock many people in Britain turn their televisions on because the Queen says ''Happy

Christmas'' to everyone.
