Teacher:TrainingTeaching you to teach English
Thinking in EnglishWhere better to learn the art of teaching English than Oxford –
a city that is in so many ways the home of the language itself.
Leading Teacher Training Centre in the UK
Founded in 1996 BSC has quickly established itself as one of the UK’s most respected specialist English
language Teacher Training centres. We offer a wide range of courses catering to the needs of UK
and overseas ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teachers, from those who are just setting
out on their teaching career to those who wish to extend their skills and knowledge with ongoing
professional development.
About our Trainers
Thanks to the skill and dedication of our team of teacher trainers we have a very high success rate
in our training courses.
Each of our trainers is a highly qualified professional and a practising teacher possessing as a minimum
a degree, an English teaching diploma (DELTA) and many years teaching experience. Our trainers are
committed to helping each of our trainees to develop their skills as a teacher and to give them direction
along their particular career path. Some staff have Master’s Degrees in linguistics and our trainers are
dedicated to the concept of lifelong learning.
Opportunities in the UK and overseas…
Thanks to the skills and dedication of our trainers our courses have a very high success rate and, once
your course is completed, our experienced staff are on hand to help and advise you on the next step in
your career path.
For CELTA graduates, work is plentiful in the UK during July and August and also at Easter. At other times
of the year it is more likely you will find employment if you are willing to be flexible about working
hours. Schools in the UK are more likely to offer work to teachers with at least a couple of years’
experience.
For a full time permanent contract you are usually expected to have the DELTA.
Most newly qualified teachers initially find work overseas, and at present the areas most in need
of English teachers are Eastern Europe, the Far East and South America. In some countries a degree
is required in order to obtain a work permit (e.g Japan). In other countries tertiary level qualifications
such as SRN, HND and Cert. ED may be acceptable for work permit purposes. Our Teacher Training Centre
has a notice-board with the latest job opportunities in the UK and overseas and we have developed a
world-wide network of contacts to pass on to you.

Oxford a very special atmosphere as one of the world’s great centres of teaching excellence.
A city made for teaching...
Walking around Oxford you will discover a vibrant
city with fine architecture, attractive parks and
beautiful colleges, some dating back 800 years.
Oxford is situated in the heart of England, only 60
minutes by train from London, and is surrounded
by some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain.
Some of Britain’s finest towns and villages are
within easy reach of Oxford, including the Roman
spa town of Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon, the
birthplace of William Shakespeare.
Unique learning experience
British Study Centres Oxford was founded in 1996.
Thanks to a large growth in student numbers, the
school moved to a fantastic newly refurbished
building in the city centre in March 2008.
Our brand new building is located in the heart
of Oxford, in the historic St. Giles district,
close to the High Street, Carfax Tower and the
pedestrianised Cornmarket area with its trendy
covered market, shops and cafés. The school is
also just a short walk from the beautiful Christ
Church meadow and College, which was featured
in the recent Harry Potter films.
During the course you will have access to a full
range of teaching materials, our dedicated Teacher
Training library, free WiFi internet and email
access and free photocopier use. Our specialist
Teacher Training library is particularly appreciated
by trainees and offers a comprehensive and
up-to-date range of books and materials for loan
during your course. In addition to all the titles
recommended on the UCLES CELTA and DELTA
reading lists, we stock a comprehensive range of
materials in applied linguistics and other ELT areas.
We also subscribe to all the major ELT monthly
journals to keep you up to date on the latest
developments in the industry.
Living in Oxford
If you are not already resident in the Oxford
area and are looking for accommodation during
the course, we are happy to arrange one of the
following accommodation options for you.
Homestay is our most popular accommodation
option. We have a large selection of trusted local
families in our homestay database offering a
choice of bed & breakfast, half-board or
self-catering.
Another option is student house accommodation,
which gives students the opportunity to live
in a shared, communal environment. All of
our student houses are located within walking
distance (usually 20 – 25 minutes) of the school.
Our Oxford school is located in the centre of the old city, close to Cornmarket.
Why take the CELTA?
Over 10,000 people successfully complete their
CELTA every year and the course is recognised by
employers worldwide. Each course is externally
validated by the University of Cambridge so you
can be assured of the quality. We offer a 4 week
intensive course designed to be a springboard for
those wishing to teach. It is also suitable for those
who have some teaching experience but who
wish to gain a formal internationally recognised
qualification in order to develop their career.
Course dates and duration
At British Study Centres we offer a high level of
personalised service by trained and experienced
professionals within a friendly and relaxed
atmosphere. We generally run one course each
month (please see our fee sheet and website
for exact start dates). Courses last 4 weeks and are
full-time. You will usually be at the school from
9am to around 5pm daily. Please see the sample
timetable opposite for a more detailed schedule.
Eligibility
Candidates should be 20 or over by the start
of course although we will consider applicants
between the ages of 18 and 20 at our discretion.
Applicants should have a good standard of
education (e.g. UK university entrance level) and
have an awareness and high level of competence
in written and spoken English in order to be able
to follow the course. For non-native speakers
we recommend an English level equivalent to
Cambridge Advanced English ‘A’ grade or IELTS 8.0.
Course Components
Language Awareness – The LA component is
designed to familiarise trainees with aspects of
the English language. It focuses on grammar &
structure (form), meaning in context (function)
and the sound system of the English language
(phonology).
Methodology of language teaching & learning
This involves the analysis and appreciation of
various methods, styles and strategies for both
language teaching and learning. You are also
introduced to a range of teaching aids and
classroom management techniques.
CELTA coursesThe Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults
(CELTA) is by far the UK’s most popular professional qualification
in English language teaching.
“Doing a CELTA
course at BSC
was amazing.
The school has
a relaxed, friendly atmosphere
which made it a great place
to study. The students in the
classes were lively and eager
to learn which created a great
atmosphere for them and the
trainees to learn in.”

The ideal way to find out if teaching English is the career for you…
If you are not sure if the 4-week CELTA course is right for you but you would like to find out more, then why not take advantage of our one-day ‘Taster’ course?
We run a number of these days during the year (please see fee sheet for precise dates). Courses cost £50 and fees can be offset
against the cost of a CELTA course if you choose to enrol on a CELTA course following the Taster day.
The Taster days run from 09.15 to 17.00 and are led by one of our experienced Teacher Trainers.
Content includes: Language Awareness and Analysis, Lesson Planning, Teaching Vocabulary and Classroom Management.
One-Day Taster Courses
2
Teaching practice – The course is very practical in
nature. Under the guidance of your tutor, you will
spend each afternoon either teaching students or
observing your peers. Course time is set aside for
the preparation of these lessons and your tutor
will assist and guide you throughout your time
with us. You will gain experience in teaching at
two distinct levels.
Classroom observation – During the course
you will be timetabled for 6 hours of classroom
observation. This will give you the opportunity
to see experienced teachers in action. These
observations are complemented by specific
observation tasks, which will be referred to
throughout the course.
Written assignments – Candidates need to
complete 4 written assignments which range from
formal language analysis to a study of teaching
materials. They are graded on a pass or fail basis
and candidates must pass 3 out of 4 assignments.
Assessment
Assessment is made on a continual basis (there
is no final exam). Particular emphasis is given to
teaching appropriate lessons effectively. Candidates
are assessed continually and kept up to date
with their progress throughout the course during
regular tutorial sessions. Final assessment is made
on three main areas: Professional Development,
Written Assignments and Teaching Practice. Final
grades are in negotiation with an external assessor
from the University of Cambridge. There are three
pass grades - Pass, Pass ‘B’ and Pass ‘A’.
Enrolment Procedure
If you wish to apply for a place on the course,
please complete either an online or the attached
application form. Places are allocated on the
basis of group and individual interviews. If you
are based overseas or live some distance from
the school, we are happy to arrange telephone
interviews. Due to the high demand for our
courses we encourage candidates to return
completed application forms as soon as possible.
Interview
Candidates should allow two hours for the
interview. As part of the interview, you will be
given some language awareness tasks. This is
designed to help us assess your ability to analyse
language. It is not a test of your knowledge
of grammar rules. If you don’t feel particularly
confident, you might want to look at ‘English
Grammar in Use’ (Murphy) or ‘Learning Teaching’
(Scrivener) for the more practical side of teaching.
We will also give you some tasks to take home
and complete so that you are fully prepared for
the start of the course
Post Interview
Once you are offered a place, we will let you think
about it for a while by keeping your place for 48
hours. If you would like to take up the offer, you
will need to send us the deposit within this time.
We ask that you pay the balance of the course
fees a minimum of 4 weeks before the start of
the course.

Why take a DELTA?
The Diploma in English Language Teaching to
Adults (DELTA) is a teaching qualification for
experienced teachers of English as a foreign or
second language. The course is accredited and
approved by the University of Cambridge (UCLES)
and is aimed at teachers with (usually) an initial
teaching qualification such as the CELTA plus at
least two years’ experience. This experience
should be with different levels of students and
preferably include teaching ESP, exam classes
and/or some teaching outside the UK. A degree
is preferred.
The DELTA course is valuable for the following
reasons: first, it helps you to develop as a teacher,
by extending your knowledge and understanding
of the principles behind your practice, and by
increasing the range of your techniques and
methods. Through feedback on your own teaching
practice, we also help you to improve your
teaching skills within the classroom. Second, it
is an essential qualification if you wish to further
your career into academic management, teacher
training or materials writing.
The course is part-time and trainees are observed
teaching their own classes in their own schools.
For this reason, trainees must be in EFL work with
adults (group classes) in or near Oxford for the
duration of the course.
The course is a challenging one and hard work!
However, the vast majority of teachers who
have taken it believe it has improved them as
teachers as well as providing them with career
opportunities. DELTA-qualified teachers often go
on to work in academic management, materials
writing and publishing.
Our tutors have been providing DELTA courses
together in Oxford since 1998 and have worked
on CELTA and DELTA courses before that. All of our
DELTA trainers are also DELTA assessors. We have
a proven track record of success in preparing
teachers to take and pass the DELTA.
Enrolment procedure
Candidates’ applications are assessed on the
following basis: interview with the course tutor,
written assignment (one hour), and language
analysis tasks. Participants are required to provide
their own classes for teaching practice. However,
British Study Centres will arrange classes for teaching
practice in exceptional circumstances, for example
in cases where participants become unable to
provide their own classes during the course.
DELTA coursesDesigned for those wishing to take their teaching to a higher
professional level, the Cambridge DELTA award is a common
requirement for full-time teaching work in the UK.
