Connection to Class ReadingIn the article “Five Ways to Integrate: Using Strategies from Contemporary Art” by

Julia Marshall, there are many examples of how teachers can incorporate art into current curriculum and the different strategies they can use to expand student knowledge about the arts in a non traditional way. She states that “Art educators have also embraced integration as a way to explore concepts from all areas of inquiry through art and to connect art to real life issues and ideas” (13). This applies to media affecting children’s views on different topics around the world, including body image, obesity, advertisements, and productions of art for specific groups of people. She also talk about how when students look at the same concepts but in a different way, they can find new meanings and understand the materials much better and can expand their knowledge as a direct result. This shows impact of showing students different ways to analyze could introduce them to an entirely new learning experience, such as media advertising like this!

Teaching Philosophy-How to apply learning through art

• Shows how influential media can be in learning• Shows the interactive role art can play in choices• Art can be fun and interesting (colorful &

appealing) • Can be used for visuals as reminders to things they

have learned in the past• Meaning and learning are connected through ideas• Promotes creativity, originality, and imagination

while still at school in the classroom
