In information technology, a networkis a series of points or nodes
interconnected by communicationpaths. Networks can interconnectwith other networks and contain
subnetworks.

ORK ANYTHING MORE THAN
PEOPLE KNOW
A network is not only about knowing people in
the society. It has boundaries and has costs associated with
it to enter and exit. You have to be willing toshare information. You also have to be able to
maintain boundaries.
These networks have constrains as well as
advantages.

1) Electrical network
An interconnection of electrical elements suchas resistors, inductors, capacitors.
2) Biological neural networkA population of physically interconnected neurons or a
whose inputs or signalling targets
3) Social network A social structure made up of individuals (or
organizations) called "nodes", which are tied (connected)by one or more specific types of interdependency, suchas friendship, kinship, common interest, financialexchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationshipsof beliefs, knowledge or prestige.

4) Business networking
A socioeconomic activity by which groups of like-mindedbusiness people recognize, create, or act upon businessopportunities..
5) Radio network -
A network system which distributes programming tomultiple stations simultaneously for coverage beyond the
limits of a single broadcast signal.
6) Telecommunications network
A collection of terminals, links and nodes which connecttogether to enable telecommunication between users ofthe terminals.

Network not necessarily people
knowing each other. It can beanything as long as they link toeach other by any means

Why might there be advantages in
being at the edge of a networkrather than in the
centre?

1.Tacit knowledge flows effortlessly fromperson to person. What is Tacit
knowledge? It is knowledge that is difficult to transferto another person by means of writing it
down or verbalising it.
Example: the ability to speak a languageor use algebra is based on explicit
knowledge but is difficult to explicitlytransfer to users.

2. Ability to employ specialised labour.People in that area are skilled and alreadytrained to do the job. This saves time and
money for the business. Also because theskilled workers understand that there aregood prospects for the industry in that
region
3. There are many beneficial facilitiesdeveloped in the region. Example:
Technical education institutes, Publicservices ( well-integrated transport).

1. Everyone is specialised in one product.
2. The industry lacks variety.
3. The industry is in pressure due the presence
of political institutions
4. Makes it difficult for other industries tocreate a base in that network- the workers will
only be specialised in skills relevant to that one
product.

5. The policy-making institutions areheavily dependant that industry alone. This can be disastrous if the industry
collapses.
6. Few services available for othereconomic activities

1.Have various options. You are not restricted toonly one type of network.
2.If other networks are available which are more
beneficial then you can easily merge with them, which might not be so easy for firm deeplyembedded in a particular network.
3.There are little costs of entering & exiting theindustry.
4. Less pressure due to high expectation
-

1.No chance for shared learning with other firms
2.No local tacit knowledge
3.Few dedicated services
4. Lack specialisation of labour
5. No political presence

Advantages of being in the centre Advantages of being in the edge
1.Tacit knowledge 1.Have various options
2. Availability of specialised labour 2.can easily merge with other
networks which bring more benefitsfrom the previous networks
3.There are many beneficial facilitiesand services
3.There are little costs of entering &exiting the industry.
4.Less pressure due to highexpectation
5.Makes a firm marginal
