BULGARIAN NATIONAL COSTUME

A SPECIFIC CULTURAL CHARACTERISTIC OF BULGARIAN PEOPLE

Traditional national costume is hand-made

and is a result of woman’s skills, taste

and imagination

The main materials are:linen, hemp, wool, cotton and silk

The whole costume is richly embroidered

Plenty of embroideries are used

There are different kinds of women’s costumes:

With two aprons With one apron

Pinafore /a whole dress/

Sayan / a top on the blouse/

Different kinds of headgear:flowers

headscarf

kerchief

silver belt buckles round the waist

Gold coins round the neck

Leather moccasins on feet

Men’s costumes are usually two types – black and white

Men usually wear a wide woolen waist-belt

There are six ethnographic regions in Bulgaria and each one has its own

specific features

The diversity of Bulgarian national costumes is influenced by the costumes of

the neighbouring countries

The first region - Dobrudza

The second region - Pirin

The third region – The Rhodopes

The fourth one – The Northern region

The fifth one – The Thracian region

The sixth region - Shopski

One of the biggest Bulgarian painters - Vladimir Dimitrov - The Master, was inspired by the

colourful costumes of young women for

his best paintings
