BUS SAFETY

There are many different types of buses

• School buses• City buses• Cross-country buses

Buses are wonderful in many ways but because of their size, they need to be used with caution.

Today we are going to explore school bus safety!

Lets pretend..

• This setup we made is our school bus.

• We have the drivers seat, passenger seats, the aisle, and two desks representing our door.

• The long yard stick coming from the front to the side of the school bus is called the crossbar. This makes you walk in front of the bus in order for the driver to see you.

Identifying Danger Zones

Where do you think danger zones around a school bus are located?

These are places around the bus where it is difficult for the driver to see. They are unsafe because the driver is seated too high to see you.

How do we keep away from these danger zones?

Always stay at least 10 feet or 5 BIG steps away from the school bus

in front, behind, and on the sides of the bus.

Waiting for a Bus

Lets think about what we should do while we wait for the school bus..

• Where do you think I should stand to wait for the school bus?

• This area is where the driver knows to stop in order to drop off an pick up students so they are sure to see us there!

Important rules to remember while waiting at the bus stop

• Only stand or sit at the bus stop at least 5 big steps away from the edge of the road.

• Stay close to the adult in the charge and never leave them.

• Stay in control of your body, do not be running or playing!

Boarding a Bus

What happens when the school bus arrives at our stop?

When the school bus driver signals that it is safe we will get on the bus.

When we enter the bus we want to make sure to walk up the steps and use the handrail to climb them.

Who and what will you see when you get on the school bus?

Safe Behavior when Riding a

School Bus

• Once someone steps onto a school bus, they are now called passengers.

• Passengers have responsibilities:1. Find your seat quickly2. Stay seated when the bus is moving3. Do not bother the school bus driver4. Be polite to other passengers and talk

quietly5. Keep hand to yourself and items in your

lap

Exiting a School Bus

When exiting the school bus..

• You move toward the door to exit once the bus has came to a complete stop at your stop.

• Hold the hand rails as you get off the bus, just like when you entered the bus.

• Remember to move 5 BIG steps away from the school bus.

Sometimes we have to cross the street to get to where we need to go..

• Walk to the edge of the extended crossbar.• Make contact with the bus driver to make sure they

see you (nod or wave).• Move around the bus’s crossbar and cross the front

of the bus with your head up and look out in front.• At the far edge of the bus you will stop and look left-

right-left to see if vehicles are coming. Wait for driver’s signal to cross and then walk to other side of the street.

If for some reason you drop something before getting on or off the school bus, you should tell the school bus driver immediately and ask them

to retrieve it.

NEVER run after it or try to pick it up yourself.
