“DMD” or “EMBC” could be used to provide conformance to therequirements for the “minimum effective modal bandwidth-length product” of
2000 MHz.km.Both defined the optical source as meeting the requirements of the IEEE
specification for the 10GBASE-SR VCSEL.
IEC 60793-2-10: 2004 and EN 60793-2-10: 2007
Cabling standards update
DMD = differential mode delayEMBC = calculated effective modal bandwidth
OM43500500
4700-
50/125
Continues to apply the two equivalent approaches - “DMD” and “EMBC” but now makesthe requirement independent of the optical source by creating a “standard” launchcondition template.
The potential confusion comes from the fact the new standard template does notprovide values of 2000 MHz.km and 4700 MHz.km as shown in the table above forCategories OM3 and OM4 cabled optical fibres respectively - instead the revised EMBC
limits equate to values of 1770 MHz.km and 4160 MHz.km respectively.
Optical fibres meeting these requirements under the standard launch condition templateare expected to provide effective modal bandwidths of 2000 MHz.km and 4700 MHz.kmusing the IEEE 10GBASE-SR VCSEL

NOTE 1: If concatenating different OSx cabled optical fibres manufactured with different optical fibre types, refer to IEC/TR 62000:2010.NOTE 2: B1.1 optical fibre is not recommended where channels may contain both category OS1 and OS2 cabled optical fibrea
b
NOTE 1 in ISO/IEC 11801 is unhelpful and is reworded as follows:“The values for total connecting hardware attenuation in channels (see clause 5) is based on the assumption that the optical fibres in the channel areof the same type (i.e. B1.3 or B6_a).”
NOTE 2 in ISO/IEC 11801 is not needed
