...for visiting the University of Chester, Parkgate Road Campus. This pack has been put together to help you get the most out of your visit.
Please note there will be no access inside University accommodation on this tour.
Pages 10-11 of this pack gives a brief introduction to the various types of accommodation available at Chester. If you choose to attend one of our Open Days or Applicant Days, then you will have the opportunity to visit examples of University owned accommodation.
The security of the University campuses is provided by the porters 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Regular patrols are made by the porters and the campuses are also monitored by Closed Circuit Television Systems (CCTV).
If you wish to speak to an academic member of staff during your visit, we recommend contacting 01244 511000 prior to your visit to arrange a meeting.
However, please note, that our academic staff are committedto their teaching responsibilities and their availability may consequently be restricted.

Opened in 2004 the Binks Building
is a state-of-the-art multipurpose facility.
BINKS BUILDING

The Binks Building houses a range of lecture theatres and seminar rooms. Lectures largely involve note taking and consist of large groups where lecturers introduce key concepts; seminar groups are smaller, more informal, and students get to spend more contact time with their lecturers and the rest of the group.
An open access computer area is also available in the Binks Building. These are available to all registered students and do not need to be booked in advance. All computers are linked into the University’s intranet. We also have the facilities to record lectures from guest speakers and upload this to the University’s intranet for staff and students to view again.

STUDENT SUPPORT AND GUIDANCELocated within the Binks Building, our Student Support and Guidance was awarded the British Quality Foundation’s UK Excellence Award for sustainable business excellence in 2014.
Incorporated within Student Support and Guidance are Student Development (who run a range of volunteering schemes); the Chaplaincy; Student Information Centre; the Disability and Specific Needs Officer; and the Counselling Service.
• Student Support and Guidance is the first point of contact if students have any problems; academic, financial or personal.
• Student Support and Guidance also look after the interests of international students.
Chester is often at the forefront of the North West’s figures for graduate employment.
• Students can continue to use Careers and Employability for up to three years after they graduate.• Students can gain advice in person, phone or by email.• Career guidance can be given on a one-to- one basis through personal appointments.• Careers and Employability aim to maximise the progression of students and graduates into employment or further study.• Careers and Employability run various workshops and events throughout the year and work closely with academic departments.• Extensive industry links provide work placement opportunities for students.

The Study Skills collection houses resources available to help students with every aspect of their academic
work, as well as their personal development.
We also have a Learning Support Unit which run study skills sessions and
workshops throughout the academic year.

The library is open until midnight during term time and during assessment, and has 24 hour access to 123 computers in the library computer base.

FITNESS SUITE
Leaving the library, return to the Binks Building and use the zebra crossing to continue straight ahead. Once you have passed the Millennium Alumni Garden on your left, continue to the left and up the slope towards theFitness Suite (number 11 on your campus map)

Located in the heart of the Parkgate Road Campus, the Fitness Suite offers an affordable, convenient and student friendly facility available to all University staff and students.
Offering a wide range of cardio-vascular, resistance and free weight equipment; the Fitness Suite is staffed by a team of friendly, approachable and qualified instructors on hand to provide you with all the support and guidance you need to obtain any goal you set your mind to.
There are different payment options, ranging from: Academic year membership, monthly or Pay as You Go. Fitness Suite members are entitled to a full health and safety induction; 2 x 45 minute personal training sessions per week; unlimited 6 week fitness programming; health and fitness programming; health and fitness assessments; and a wide range of exercise classes (free for Academic year and monthly membership).
The Gymnasium, provides a high quality dance and aerobic area. It is fully equipped with a full size mirrored wall, a bar and a newly refurbished sprung floor.
The Sports Hall on the Chester Campus is a modern, fully equipped venue which is suitable to house a variety of indoor activities such as Netball, Basketball, Volleyball and Badminton with a viewing area for University matches.
Exercise classes are delivered by qualified, motivating and energetic instructors throughout the week.
The Hockey Specific Astro is available for sports teams and recreational use for hockey and lacrosse training and matches.
Grass pitches are maintained to a high standard throughout the year and are located at the Kingsway Buildings.
Two glass backed squash courts are situated on the Chester Campus and are available throughout the academic year for a small fee. Rackets can be hired from the Fitness Suite and balls are available for purchase.
The University Swimming Pool is situated on the Chester Campus. It is a 5-lane pool with a maximum depth of 3.5 metres and is 25 metres in length. The pool is open to all staff and students for recreational use at certain times throughout the week, free of charge.
The Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) offers a state of the art artificial grass playing surface available for all University staff and students to use free of charge. Fully floodlit, it holds 3 x 7-a-side or 1 x 11-a-side pitches, fully equipped for both football and rugby.
The 3-lane all weather running track that runs alongside the MUGA is also available for all students and staff to use free of charge.
The 2 x full sized outdoor tennis courts are fully floodlit and available for all University staff and students all year round for a small hourly fee. Rackets can be hired from the Fitness Centre and balls are available for purchase.

Leaving the Fitness Suite, continue right and then left around the Thomas Building (number 25 on your campus map). Once you are at the front of the Thomas Building, you will notice two large residences to your left and right: Fisher House and Astbury House. These are just two forms of University accommodation available, for a full outline of accommodation locations please see your campus map, however we remind you that there is no access to University accommodation on this tour.

Although we cannot guarantee all first year students accommodation, we have an extensive list of private sector properties available to rent. Students often comment on the close-knit student community around campus created by the proximity of University and private sector housing. So, it really makes no difference whether you live in University owned or private sector accommodation.

Santander Universities began its activity in the UK in 2007 with the commitment to support higher education. Working in partnership with the University of Chester and the Chester Students’ Union. The University of Chester signed a 3 year-agreement with Santander Universities in July 2012 which brings the following benefits to the University:

CHAPEL
Built in 1847 by former students, the University Chapel is open Monday to Friday offering regular services throughout the week, as well as being a venue for major University services and occasional weddings, baptisms and memorial services for students and staff, past and present. It has just undergone a major make-over to bring it

Chaplaincy House (Longfield House, adjacent to the Binks Building) is open every day for students who would like to drop in for a cuppa and chat to one of the Chaplains, about life, the universe or anything or simply to come and find some quiet space in comfortable surroundings.
The Christian Union (CU) - currently the largest Society in the SU run popular initiatives such as:• “Txt a toastie” scheme• “Cuppa” - CU members meet in town and give out tea and coffee to students leaving clubs in town on Wednesday nights.
Continue past Santander and turn left to make your way to the chapel.(number 6 on your campus map).

WHITE’S DINING ROOM
White’s Dining Room offers a wide selection of hot and cold food and has a relaxing area with a large screen TV and sofas.
• Students who are in full board or semi catered accommodation (see Accommodation Facts section on page 10) would usually eat their meals in here. However paying customers can also use White’s Dining Room.• There are a variety of food areas including a sandwich bar, salad bar, jacket potato/panini bar and an area where a range of home-made hot dishes are served.• Self-catered students or students living in private sector accommodation can also participate in the meal schemes.
The Chester catering services have won a Healthy Eating Option Award and a
customer service award.
Special dietary requirements can be catered for at White’s Dining Room.

CHESTER STUDENTS’ UNION
As part of the National Union of Students (NUS), the Chester Students’ Union (CSU) is there to represent the student voice on a range of issues.
The President and Vice Presidents are elected on an annual basis from the student body.
The bar also has pool tables and large screen TV, making it a popular social area for students.
CSU is responsible for organising Freshers’ Week and other entertainment such as quiz nights, karaoke and comedy nights.
CSU has over 100 clubs and societies. The sporting clubs and societies play in the Sports League (BUCS) (British Universities and College).
CH1, the students’ union bar has a licence until 3am and also hosts nights out in partner nightclubs.
Every penny spent in CSU goes back into improving Union services and facilities.
