Cardinals return
experience, talent in 2017
It would difficult for one to
look at the 2017 Millington varsity
girls’ soccer roster and not find a
reason to smile.
With a roster featuring 11
seniors and 10 returning starters,
Millington Coach Andrew Selich
has every reason to be optimistic for
the upcoming season. In fact, the
third year coach sees a lot of
potential for his team this year.
“We certainly return a lot of
talent and experience,” Coach
Selich said. “But we need to
remember more than anything that
we still need to work hard every day
in practice and every game if we are
to be successful in 2017.”
Once again the Cardinals
will compete in the Tri-Valley East
Conference, a tough conference
which features state powerhouse
teams like Birch Run and
Frankenmuth, as well as an up-and-
comer like North Branch.
“Our league is tough,”
Selich said. “Birch Run is the
favorite this year, but Frankenmuth
and North Branch are both capable
of winning the title. Not to mention
we have to play Garber twice in
league play this year, so whoever
wins our league definitely has to
earn it.
“We are just hoping, that by
season’s end, we can be
competitive.”

Years Played: 2016,17
An experienced Meacham
back in goal for Cardinals
There was no bigger
question entering the 2016 season
than that of who was going to be the
team’s goalie?
After losing a goalie to
injury in 2015 and having to
returning goalie on roster for 2016,
Coach Andrew Selich was forced to
look outside the box for an answer
to the question.
The answer turned out to be
Jenna Meacham.
Meacham joined the team
last spring, after not having played
soccer since her youth, but it didn’t
take her long to get comfortable
being the player charged with
stopping shots for the Cardinals.
“Jenna took to the goalie
position like a natural last season,”
Coach Selich said. “Of course she
started a little slowly, but who
wouldn’t in a situation like that. The
goalie position in soccer is one of
the most important in all of sports,
and Jenna became, through the
course of the season, one of the best
goalies in the area.”
Meacham set a new school
record in 2016 for wins in a season
by a Millington goalie with nine.
She also set a school record for
shutouts in a season (7) and
recorded four shutouts in league
play.
For that, Meacham was
named First Team All-Conference
in the Tri-Valley East, and was
named the team’s Most Valuable
Player at the conclusion of the
season.
“She has experience and
confidence now,” Coach Selich
said. “I expect she will break more
records in 2017.”

been on the varsity volleyball and varsity
basketball teams.
#2 – Makayla Bremer Junior – Midfielder
Years Played: 2015, 16, 17
Bremer continues to hold
down the left for Cards
For two years now,
Makayla Bremer has been the
starting left Midfielder for
Millington, and this year will no
different for the Cardinals.
Bremer has been a fixture
on the left side of the field since
her varsity career began, and her
coach says it was all by her
doing that made it that way.
“Makayla asked her
freshman year if she could play
the left outside mid position,”
Coach Andrew Selich said. “She
had no problems holding down
that side of the field as a
freshman and she was even
better last year. It’s really nice to
get some offense out of what is
normally a defensive type of
position.”
Bremer made the biggest
jump in offensive production of
any returning starter last year,
increasing her goals scored from
four her freshman year to 12 in
her sophomore season.
That increased production
led to post season honors as well,
as Bremer was named First Team
All-Conference and was also
selected to the All-District team
last season.
“Makayla is a
phenomenal soccer player,”
Coach Selich said. “The sky is
the limit with her ability and I
think she will elevate her game
again in 2017.”

#3 – Kayla Petzold Senior – Midfielder
Years Played: 2014, 15, 16, 17
A healthy Petzold moves
to Midfield in 2017
Kayla Petzold entered the
2016 season on a mission.
After having missed the
entire 2015 season while
recuperating from knee surgery,
Petzold faced her junior year with a
lot to prove. Could she get back to
full strength? One look at her
performance from last year answers
that question.
Petzold ended her junior
year scoring a total of 11 goals
while also adding nine assists in 20
games, all while playing whatever
position was asked of her by the
coach.
“Kayla is an extremely
versatile soccer player,” Coach
Andrew Selich said. “I’ve coached
Kayla in soccer since AYSO, and I
believe that she could play any
position on the field and be one of
our best players at that position.
This year, since she is 100%
healthy, we are moving her to
midfield, where her strength and
versatility will benefit us the most.”
Petzold was named
Honorable Mention All-Conference
in the Tri-Valley East a year ago,
and was also selected to the All-
District team.
Another three-sport athlete,
Petzold has also garnered Honorable
Mention honors in basketball and
volleyball as well.
“Since she missed a full
season, I feel that Kayla has just
scratched the surface on what she
can do on the soccer field,” Coach
Selich said. “I’m excited to see what
she can do in 2017.”

#6 – Alyssa Cook Senior – Defense
Years Played: 2015, 16, 17
An experienced Cook
seeks to add depth to ‘D’
After spending most of her
sophomore working as a midfielder,
Alyssa Cook made the switch in
2016 to play defense full time. The
move worked.
Cook added some much-
needed depth that the defense
lacked due to the graduation of
some players from the previous
season. And her training with the
midfielders gave Cook an advantage
that most teams lack on the back
line.
“The season Alyssa spent
with the midfielders really worked
out well for her and the team,”
Coach Andrew Selich said. “Alyssa
spent time every day at practice
working on footwork, ball handling
and especially ball handing in and
out of traffic, and those skills are so
important. Alyssa has those skills
now and she has become a
defensive player who can move the
ball out of traffic and reverse the
attack on the field.”
Cook started five games on
the back line for the Cardinals in
2016, and picked up the first assist
of her career in a 7-0 win at
LakeVille. After not playing her
freshman year, Cook has appeared
in 33 games over the past two
seasons, and entering her senior
campaign, Selich expects that Cook
will again add some much needed
depth to the defense.
“We haven’t had much
experience in our players over the
past two years,” Coach Selich said.
“This year is different. We have
players like Alyssa, confident
players who are going to make a
difference in 2017.”

Wolfington returns to lead
defense in senior season
No one has appeared in
more soccer games over the past
three seasons as Molly Wolfington.
And this season, Wolfington
appears ready to add to that total.
Wolfington is back for her
fourth season for the Cardinals, and
in that time, has logged more games
played and more time on the soccer
field than any other current player.
At her sweeper position, Molly has
been incredibly consistent during
her career, and that has paid off for
her team.
“Molly is such a smart
ballplayer,” Coach Andrew Selich
said. “She has such a high soccer
IQ, and has always been
comfortable playing defense. She
has started every game for me the
past two seasons at the center back
position on defense and has played
really well. She always seems to be
in the right spot at the right time.”
After losing the starting GK
her sophomore season, Wolfington
was instrumental in helping keep
shots off goal. With a new goalie in
net last year as well, again
Wolfington’s leadership helped, as
the Cardinals ‘D’ stepped up when
it was called upon.
Wolfington was named
Honorable Mention All-Conference
after her sophomore season in
which she recorded 195 defensive
stops.
“Molly is so technically
solid,” Coach Selich said. “It’s been
a pleasure to watch her play over
the years and it will be so again to
watch her do what she does best
during the 2017 season.”

o Wolfington has appeared in more games for
Millington varsity soccer than any other current
senior on the roster. She has appeared in 52
games in three seasons.
o Molly holds the school single-season record in
soccer with 195 defensive steals/stops. She set
that record during her sophomore season.
Kociba emerges as one of
top defensive players
Entering the 2016 season.
Gabby Kociba was a player without
a position.
In her freshman year in
2015, Kociba started out on defense
before making the switch to goalie
after senior GK Madison Jones
broke her thumb in the fourth game
of the season.
Kociba appeared in 14
games in net for the Cardinals in
2015, finishing the season with a 7-
7 record while making 208 saves.
But the plan all along was always to
eventually get Kociba back on
defense, so Coach Andrew Selich
waited on what to do with Gabby
while at the same time searching for
a new goalie for 2016.
“Gabby was so good on
defense her freshman season that we
knew that was her natural position.
She was the only option we had at
goalie after the injury to Jones, and
we were willing to have Gabby play
at GK her sophomore season as
well. When Jenna Meacham joined
the team to play goalie, that was
when we knew we could Gabby
back to where we needed her most.”
Kociba started every game
in 2016 on defense, and emerged as
a force during the season. She was
selected Honorable Mention All-
Conference in the Tri-Valley East,
and this year her coach expects her
to continue her ascent as one of the
best defensive players in the league.
“Gabby has a full season of
experience now playing on the back
line,” Coach Selich said. “Her
toughness and speed are second to
none and we are expecting big
things from Gabby Kociba in 2017.”

#12 – Taylor Wirsing Junior – Forward Years Played: 2016, 17
Wirsing looking to build
on first year success
Coming into the 2016
season, Taylor Wirsing had not
played soccer since her days in
AYSO. Wirsing spent her first
spring in high school playing on the
junior varsity softball team. For her
sophomore season, Wirsing made
the jump to soccer, and that move
paid off for the Cardinals.
Wirsing emerged in 2016 as
one of the top forwards on the
Millington squad, ending the season
with eight goals and six assists.
And, according to her coach, her
presence on the field made a
difference in the production of her
teammates as well.
“Taylor plays with no fear
whatsoever,” Coach Andrew Selich
said. “Even at the beginning of last
season, she had no experience in
high school soccer and had not
played a soccer game since she was
in the 7th grade. But that didn’t deter
Taylor one bit. She plays with a
toughness that suits her well and
began to pay off for her as the
season wore on.”
Wirsing’s best game of last
season came in an 8-0 home win
over Caro. In that game, she
registered the first Hat Trick of her
career while also adding two assists
for a total of five points in one
game.
“That Caro game just
showed the talent that Taylor has,”
Coach Selich said. “I expect now
that she has a season of playing
behind her, we will see more games
like that from Taylor in 2017.”

o In a 3-0 win over Caro on May 4, 2016, Lee
recorded a career-high three assists. She was
named Player of the Game for her efforts.
o Lee was named the Cardinals’ Defensive Player
of the Year after the 2016 season.
Defensive POY Lee is back
for senior season
After missing the final six
games of her sophomore year due to
an ankle injury, Cassy Lee entered
the 2016 season with something to
prove. Lee wanted to show that the
injury did not slow her down and
that she could still be a dominant
player on the field for the Cardinals.
By seasons end, Lee proved that and
more.
Lee emerged in 2016 as one
of the area’s best Defensive
Midfielders, routinely drawing the
job of shadowing up the opposing
team’s top scorer. And more often
than not, Lee was up for the
challenge.
“Cassy did not have an easy
job in front of her last season,”
Coach Andrew Selich said. “We had
her match up against opponent’s top
playmakers and scorers and she did
the job we asked of her. Our goals
against last year went from 84 in
2015 to 37, and Cassy was a big
part of that. I expect more of the
same in 2017.”
Lee not only proved to be a
defensive force in 2016, but her
ability to move the ball began to pay
off as well. She ended the season
with nine assists, and scored a goal
in a game at Garber.
For her efforts, Lee was
selected Honorable Mention All-
Conference in the Tri-Valley East
and was also named Second Team
All-Area by The Tuscola County
Advertiser in 2016.
“Cassy is an extremely
smart and talented player,” Coach
Selich said. “And she plays smart
and logs a lot of minutes for us. She
should have a great senior season.”

Ostrander looking for
breakout junior season
A player on the rise, junior
Forward Regan Ostrander is,
according to her coach, ready for a
breakout season.
In two seasons on the
varsity, Ostrander has totaled three
goals, but in that time, the talented
junior was younger, competing
against juniors and seniors from
some of the best teams in the
conference.
Now, Ostrander is an
upperclassmen, and she is looking
to show the rest of the league what
she can do in 2017.
“Regan is a three-sport
athlete, and those are rare in this day
and age” Coach Andrew Selich said.
“And she has committed to working
out in her previous two sports this
school season, and you can see the
results of her efforts. Regan looks
stronger and faster, and that will pay
off for her this season.”
Ostrander was on the
varsity volleyball and varsity
basketball teams this year. She been
on the varsity soccer team since her
freshmen season in 2015, spending
most of her time playing forward
and midfield.
This season, Ostrander will
make the move to forward full time
for the Cardinals, a move which has
Coach Selich excited to see the
outcome.
“We are really looking
forward to seeing Regan on the field
this season,” Coach Selich said. “I
think she will do some great things
this year for us and she will
continue to grow as a player.”

#19 – Christina Grignani Senior – Midfielder
Years Played: 2014, 15, 16, 17
Grignani seeks to lead
Cardinals in senior season
Christina Grignani enters
her fourth year on the varsity for
Millington soccer, and the senior
Center Midfielder is on a mission in
2017.
Last season, Grignani
scored a career-high 10 goals while
adding nine assists from an outside
midfield position. For her final
campaign in the red and white,
Grignani is moving full time to play
Center Midfield, and according to
her coach, the move has energized
the All-Conference senior.
“Christina has worked
really hard to be ready for this
season,” Coach Andrew Selich said.
“Christina is immensely talented
and her career stats reflect that. But
she has spent a lot of time on the
field playing outside and defensive
midfield positions. Moving her to
the middle should free her up
offensively and we are all excited to
see the outcome of that.”
Grignani was selected First
Team All-Conference and All-
District after her sophomore season.
Last year, Grignani was an
Honorable Mention All-Conference
selection.
In three seasons, Grignani
has totaled 20 goals and 21 assists
in 52 career games. Grignani also
played two seasons on the
Millington varsity volleyball team
and participates in equestrian as
well.
“Christina plays with a lot
of energy and is a very smart
player,” Coach Selich said. “I know
she will have a big year for us in
2017.”
#20 – Kayla Hitsman Junior – Defense
Years Played: 2016, 17
Hitsman shakes off injury-
filled first season
A newcomer to the varsity in
2016, perhaps no one had a more
frustrating season than Kayla
Hitsman.
Having played high school
softball her freshman year, Hitsman
looked poised to be a contributor
right from the start on defense for the
Cardinals. But injuries set the then-
sophomore back, and by the time she
had worked her health back to where
it needed to be the season was near
an end.
This year has been different
for the junior though. Hitsman has
committed herself to being in the
weight room more to strengthen
herself up for the rough haul of the
soccer season. And according to the
coach, it looks as though all the hard
work is going to pay off for Kayla.
“Playing 20 or more games
in soccer in three months in the
spring can be tough on the body, and
I think Kayla underestimated how
tough it would be,” Coach Andrew
Selich said. “I had coached Kayla in
AYSO, so I know she has the talent
to succeed in high school. I just think
taking the extra year off perhaps set
her a little behind everyone else, and
you could tell with the little nagging
injuries she had that perhaps that was
the case. This year, though, she looks
ready. I think we are going to see a
different Kayla Hitsman on the field
in 2017.”
Hitsman will undoubtedly
add in 2017 some depth to an already
talented and experienced defense,
which will only help the Cardinals in
the long run.
“It’s a long season, and
having depth will make us better,”
Coach Selich said. “Having a player
like Kayla Hitsman makes us better.”

Babcock excited to play
defense again for Cards
Perhaps no player’s
personality on the roster for
Millington fits their position so
perfectly than does that of Lauren
Babcock.
A senior, Babcock has been
a fixture on the defensive backline
for the Cardinals since her
sophomore season. That year,
Lauren was inserted into the
starting lineup in the fourth game of
the year after an injury to a starter.
According to her coach, it was a
perfect fit.
“Lauren’s mentality and her
personality just fit so perfectly for
defense,” Millington coach Andrew
Selich said. “She is the nicest kid in
the world off the field. But when
the game starts, Lauren is as feisty
as any player I have ever coached.
She can play rough and she is fast,
so she was a natural fit on defense
and she has been ever since.”
Since being installed as a
starter her sophomore season,
Babcock has started 34 straight
games at her position as right
outside back on the defense. She
was an integral part of the team’s
defensive maturity that saw it go
from 84 goals allowed in 2015 to
just 37 goals allowed a season ago.
The hopes are that season, the
defense will be even better than
that.
“We have a lot of
experience on our defense and
Lauren is a part of that,” Coach
Selich said. “I expect Lauren will
continue to grow as a player and
have another good season for

#25 – Erin Blumberg Junior – Defense
Years Played: 2016, 17
Blumberg strives to
contribute to defense
Erin Blumberg joined the
Millington girls’ varsity soccer
team for her sophomore season in
2016, and after a sometimes
frustrating first year, the junior is
ready to contribute to her team this
year in 2017.
After not having played
soccer her freshmen season,
Blumberg spent most of last year
playing catch up on learning the
intricacies of playing defense in
high school soccer. Early on in the
season, the lack of playing
experience was apparent, but by
season’s end the now-junior looked
like a different player all together.
“Erin is a tough kid,”
Coach Andrew Selich said. “I
coached her in AYSO and she was
a very solid defensive player. Her
freshman year she did not go out for
soccer and I think the year away
hurt her as far as where she was
with understanding the game. Last
year was her learning year, and it
seemed to work for her.”
A lefty, Blumberg has a big
leg and surprising speed that makes
for a nice blend in a defensive
player. Going into her junior year,
she has spent a lot of time working
out and getting prepared for the
rigors of the sometimes rough
soccer season.
“Erin is more prepared for
this season than she was a year
ago,” Coach Selich said. “She
seems mentally prepared and
physically prepared. That will
benefit us in 2017.”

o Blumberg picked up her first career start in
2016 on defense in a home game against USA.
That game was played under the lights on
Alumni Field and Millington won 7-0.
o Blumberg was on the golf team during the
spring sports season of her freshman year.
#26 – Allie Claveau Senior – Forward
Years Played: 2014, 15, 16, 17
Claveau enters final
season confident
Allie Claveau has spent
time during her first three seasons
on varsity working out at every
position.
Her freshman season she
played forward. Then she was
moved to defense during her
sophomore season. And last year
Allie was moved back to forward.
With all the movement
around the field, the now-senior
was never able to get comfortable
at any position. Now, as she enters
her final season of play for the
Cardinals, Claveau will once again
be a forward so being able to
concentrate on a position she
knows how to play has the senior
confident and excited.
“Allie has felt that she was
never able to get comfortable on
the field,” Coach Andrew Selich
said. “She spent her first season
working with the offense and then I
moved her to defense when I
became coach. I moved her again
last season, so it’s mostly my fault.
I fell now like she has learned the
position after spending all of last
season working on it.”
Claveau came close several
times last season to scoring her first
career goal. She hit the post in
games against LakeVille, USA,
Caro and SASA, so this year her
coach expects that she will finally
have the experience to get that
elusive goal.
“Allie works hard and I
believe that this is her year,” Coach
Selich said. “Allie Claveau works
hard every day and has a great
attitude and that will pay off for her
in 2017.”

#30 – Elizabeth Selich Junior – Forward
Years Played: 2015, 16, 17
Selich enters 3rd year with
high hopes for Cardinals
Elizabeth Selich entered the
area soccer scene as a freshman in
2015, and didn’t take long to
establish herself as one of the top
playmakers in the league.
Selich started all 18 games
for the Cardinals in 2015 at the
Center Midfield position, and ended
up leading the team with 18 assists.
She also added seven goals in her
first season, all of which was good
enough to earn her First-Team All-
Conference honors at the end of the
season.
Not to be outdone in her
sophomore season, Selich increased
her assist total in 2016 to 21, while
also adding eight goals for the
Cardinals. She started in all 20
games a season ago, and ended up
being named First-Team All-
Conference in the Tri-Valley East,
as well as named to the All-District
team and selected First Team All-
Area by The Tuscola County
Advertiser.
“Elizabeth is a force on the
soccer field,” Coach Andrew Selich
said. “She always seems to find the
ball whether in the air or in traffic.
She is a good athlete with
surprisingly good speed, and is a
natural leader on the field.”
Elizabeth Selich will be
counted upon again this season to
provide some offensive spark for
the Cardinals as the junior will
spend more times this season
playing the forward position.
“She will be upfront more
for us this year,” Coach Selich said.
“That should pay off for us in terms
of offensive production.”

#36 – Lindsay Socia Senior – Forward
Years Played: 2014, 15, 16, 17
Socia hopes to build on
strong finish of 2016
It’s doubtful that one could
find a more frustrated senior on this
year’s roster than that of Lindsay
Socia.
A veteran for the Cardinals,
Socia has appeared in just 27 games
in her previous three seasons,
mostly due to nagging injuries that
have lingered for some time now.
Entering her senior season, though,
it appears as if the speedy forward
has finally put the past and those
injuries behind her.
“Lindsay has assured me
that, for the first time in a long
time, she is 100% healthy,” Coach
Andrew Selich said. “She has
injured and re-injured her ankle so
many times during the past three
years, but she has worked on
strengthening the tendons around
the joint. This should make her
stronger and less likely to get hurt
in 2017.”
Socia broke through late in
2016 and picked her first career
goal in a 6-0 win at SASA. She
later added another one in the same
game and scored a third goal of the
season in an 8-0 home win over
Caro in late May.
“Lindsay has good speed
and uses it well and it finally paid
off for her last season,” Coach
Selich said. “Her speed makes such
a huge difference when she is in 1
v. 1 opportunities. Keeping her
healthy will be a major bonus for us
this year.
“If we are going to be
successful in 2017, we are going to
need a healthy Lindsay Socia.”
Four newcomers add
depth to Cardinal roster
A group of newcomers this
season will be counted upon to add
some much-needed depth for the
Millington girls varsity soccer
team.
Senior Mikala Torrey,
Sophomore Rebekah Williams, and
freshmen Kendall Bowman and
Shelby Dues will be looked upon
by Coach Andrew Selich to bolster
the team’s depth, an area that has
been somewhat depleted during the
third-year coach’s first two seasons
at the helm of the program.
“My first year, by our last
game, a playoff game against Flint
Powers, I think that, due to
injuries, we had just four or five
girls in uniform on the bench,”
Coach Selich said. “We were
forced during the final games to
stretch out the minutes of our
starters which in turn tired us out.
We had to do that too many times
down the final stretch of the
season.
"You need a roster of 18-
19 players that can all give you
quality minutes if you want to be a
good team. Fresh legs mean fast
legs, and we have a chance at that
this season with a deeper roster of
players.”
Even though the
newcomers have yet to suit up in a
game for Millington, Coach Selich
seems assured that the team will be
better off with the five players on
the roster.
“I know that each of the
four new players on our team this
season will add something positive
for us in 2017.”
