Do you work for or patronize a business that goes the extra mile to protect the environment? Do you know of any businesses that inspire you to go green? If so, please take the time to nominate them for the third annual Keene Green Business of the Year
Award. This award recognizes those socially respon-sible businesses that have developed innovative and committed practices or programs resulting in envi-ronmental improvements, cost savings, energy con-servation, environmental stewardship, greenhouse gas reductions, or resource use efficiency. Last year, the Green Business of the Year Award was awarded to The Inn at Valley Farms. The honor was awarded by the Keene Cities for Climate Protection Committee (www.ci.keene.nh.us/government/boards-commis-sions/cities-climate-protect), in partnership with the Hannah Grimes Center (www.hannahgrimes.com), Monadnock Sustainability Network (www.sustain-ablemonadnock.com), and Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce (www.keenechamber.com).
The Cities for Climate Protection Committee of the City of Keene decided to develop the award program as a way to encourage local businesses to adopt greener practices and serve as environmental and social leaders in the community. The aim is also to bring public attention to these efforts for positive change. After a review of the nominations submitted for last year’s award, The Inn at Valley Farms stood out as an exceptional example of what a local business
can do to be socially responsible. The Inn at Valley Farms demonstrated commit-
ment and dedication across the board toward green efforts and sustainability. Their green practices include: comprehensive recycling and composting (including vermicomposting), extensive use of locally grown food, use of green cleaning products, use of recycled content paper products, energy efficient appliances, and lighting throughout the Inn. This pasture-based farm was also praised for its commit-ment to sustainable farming practices including no-till gardening, intensive rotational grazing, continu-ally reviewing operations, purchasing, and farming practices for improvement and their commitment to education of guests and customers through agritour-ism events (www.walpolevalleyfarms.com), public tours (www.walpolevalleyfarms.com/farm-tours/), and an on-site interpretive center created in partner-ship with Antioch New England Graduate School students (www.antiochne.edu/).
Right now the search is on to find, and recog-nize, the next greatest and greenest business in the Monadnock Region that is going above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of the environment and the region. Share your opinion on who should be given the tribute of Green Business of the Year in 2011 by nominating a business who has demonstrated its commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
Eligibility is limited to for-profit businesses in the Monadnock Region. Nominations can be made by anyone and are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, March 2nd. This honor is being awarded by the Keene Cities for Climate Protection Committee in partnership with the Hannah Grimes Center, the Monadnock Sustain-ability Network and the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce. The award ceremony will be held dur-ing the week of Earth Day. Nomination information
