PHYSICAL HAZARD

Common Laboratory Hazards

Because laboratories involve numerous chemicals, procedures, and operations, they require extensive safety precautions. Laboratory safety involves chemical safety, fire safety, electrical safety, and other safety issues.

Examples of common hazards include the following:

• Chemical hazards:Toxins, corrosives, flammables, and reactives

• Biological hazards:Microbes, animals, plants, and genetically modified agents

• Radiation hazards:Ionizing and nonionizing radiation

• Physical hazards:Heating devices, noise, projectiles, fire, cold, etc.

• Electrical hazards:Fire and shock

• Mechanical hazards: Moving machinery

MY TOPIC

• Airborne hazardous materials:Vapors, dust, etc.

• Ergonomic factors:Standing, repetitive motion

An accident caused by improper heating…

An accident caused by improper heating…

A student was heating a test tube containing a mixture of chemical liquids. Instead of heating the mixture gently, he heated it strongly without shaking.

• After heating , he immediately put the test tube under the nose of a girl student standing next to him for her to smell the gas evolved.

Continue,,,,

Both students were not wearing safety spectacles .The hot mixture of chemicals , liquids suddenly squirted out of the test tube onto the left eye and face of the girl student , who screamed consequently for help.

• The laboratory technician immediately took the injury student to the preparation room and washed her left eye and face with distilled water continuously until the ambulance personnel summoned by the school arrived.

Continue,,,,

The injured student was taken

to the hospital and given medical treatment.

Fortunately , the students’s injuries were not permanent , but she had suffered a great deal of pain and had to take sick leave for a week.

PREVENTS

Students should wear safety spectacles when doing experiments.

Students should follow relevant experimental procedures closely when doing experiments (eg: when only gentle heating is required do not apply strong heating).

• During experiments, student should execute these techniques properly.(eg shaking a test tube of chemical liquids properly on heating ; smelling gases evolved from a test tube by means of waving the gases towards the nose , but not directly above the test tube) .

• Teachers should ensure that students are aware of the relevant experimental technique before doing experiments.
