SimulationLaboratory Guidelines

Do not store or consume food or drink in the laboratory.

No smoking. No excuses.

Know the location of the nearest emergency shower, first aid kit, fire fighting equipment, exit and evacuation assembly area.

Dispose of specialised wastes (e.g. sharps, broken glassware, and chemical) in containers reserved for the particular type of waste.

Needles are not to be re-capped.

Inform your lecturer, supervisor or technician of any chemical spill. Clean up spills immediately and thoroughly. Seek advice if you are unsure of what to do.

Neither pens nor markers are allowed near the mannequins at any time.

Students to conduct themselves in a professional manner. No running or inappropriate behaviour in the laboratory at any time.

All students to wear Charles Darwin University Uniform and abide by the Uniform Policy. (see “Uniform Policy”)

Mobile phones must be turned off in nursing laboratory.

Ask for assistance if you are unsure of what to do.

Bags brought into the laboratory must be stored as directed. Security of the contents remains the responsibility of the student.

The mannequins, instruments and equipment used during the simulation are expensive and fragile and must be handled with care.

Anyone found wilfully damaging equipment will be excluded from laboratories. This will result in an automatic Withdrawn Fail (WF) grade of the unit.

All accidents must be reported to the Technical Officer and an Incident Form completed.

Any faults with instruments or equipment must be immediately reported to the supervisor or Technical Officer.

No unauthorised repairs to instruments or equipment.

All equipment is to be cleaned after use and returned to where it belongs. Beds are to be returned to their position with mannequins positioned in beds correctly and the beds MUST be made neatly.

Mannequins are to be handled only as directed and are not to be stacked.

The moving of mannequins onto and off beds is a two person task. No exceptions.

All benches are to be wiped clean after use and all rubbish is to be put into rubbish bins.

Wash hands with soap and water before leaving and when returning to the laboratory.

Always exercise care when opening and closing doors and entering or leaving the laboratory.
