Welcome to the Grand
Opening of the SUTD-MIT
International Design Centre
(IDC). It is with great pride,
humility, and excitement that
we share with you this
historic milestone of the IDC.
Just a mere six years ago, the
IDC was a dream, a vision,
and an expectation for
Singapore and its citizens.
Now it is a full blown reality.
The IDC connects the world
from Boston, to Singapore, to
Hangzhou. It supports over
500 personnel and 140 current
projects. The IDC has
produced over 1,200 research
publications, over 40 patents,
over 100 creations, and over
130 international awards.
These numbers grow and
multiply each moment of
each day. The IDC is
currently rated in the top ten
of design research enterprises
in the world. At the very
least, the IDC enriches the
Singapore landscape of
research, technology and
design, and seeks to catalyze

Singapore as a design hub
for the region and global
economy. There is no
doubt or dispute that the
IDC is the largest design
research, design science,
and design application
centre in the world. We
humbly seek to leverage
this scale and propagate
our unique brand with
partners from all
disciplines and cultures.
Thank you for being a part
of this special day. Let’s
seek to Design and
Innovate together!!
acknowledges the support
of the Singapore Ministry of
Education, in addition to
guests from numerous other
government and industrial
organisations. We are
thankful to have strong
backing in our endeavours
from SUTD’s President and
Provost, Profs Tom

INTERNATIONAL
DESIGN
CENTRE (IDC)
The SUTD-MIT International
Design Centre (IDC) is a
world premier scholarly hub
for technologically-intensive
design science, research and
practice. It is a multi-million
dollar Centre based both in
Singapore at SUTD, and in
Cambridge, MA, USA at
MIT, with academic and
industrial partners from
around the world. IDC
faculty, researchers and
students work together to
design devices, products,
systems, services and the

built environment that
address strategic needs of
Singapore, the greater Asian
region, the US, and the global
community. At the same
time, the IDC studies and
advances the design process
and design science, seeking
to develop new tools and
methods for design practice
and education. The IDC is
organised and concentrates
its efforts on three Grand
Challenges: Sustainable Built
Environment, Design with
the Developing World, and
ICT-enabled Devices for
Better Living, in conjunction
with six Design Research
Thrusts: Experimental
Design, Fostering Creativity,
Visualisation and
Prototyping, Design
Computation, Decision
Making, and Global
Collaboration. Through this
concentration, the IDC
creates quality research,
talent, curricula, and value
for the innovation ecosystem.

“Your program is
definitely the best
design thinking
workshop I've
attended. What
stood out is the
values that you
impart a Design
Thinker should have
- collaboration and
empathy. After all,
most of the time we
are innovating for
the good of our
users.” -Bank of Singapore:

Recent IDC Creations
The image on the left shows
IDC co-Director, Prof Kristin
Wood, and IDC Research
Scientist, Dr Bradley
Camburn presenting IDC
creations, Harmonic
Levitator and Tectonic
Origami to Prime Minister,
Mr Lee Hsien Loong.
The Harmonic Levitator is a
brass musical instrument,
inspired by the traditional
singing bowl. It represents,
the creativity,
innovativeness, and
technology development of
the students, graduates,
researchers, faculty, and staff
of SUTD. The free motion is
enabled with a novel
magnetic levitation array.
Tectonic Origami is an
invention that transforms
from a planar surface to a
three dimensional form
using Euclidean geometric
relationships. The walls are
engraved with detailing of
the antique pavilion located
on campus.
