feeling of self worth.

2. Situational-About what we do.

3. Task-A specific activitiy.

{Attitude toward the language and the people who speak it.

Positive attitude=faster acquisition

Your feelings about your teacher effect your performance!

Motivation:

Two types.

Integration: Desire to identify with the target language group.

Instrumental: Learning for the sake of making money off it later.

{Research shows its better to learn for the love than the $$$$$

Instrumental Motivation

Anxiety:

{ {Trait anxiety-anxious by nature.

State anxiety-anxious over the task at hand.

Anxiety is the Enemy!!!!

1. Teach students to recognize symptoms.

2. Teach anxiety is only temporary. 3. Provide multiple chances for success. 4. Encourage risk taking. 5. Create a non-threating environment. 6. Lighten the mood. 7. Plan activities for varied learning

styles.

Defeat it with:

{First hand contact with the native speakers of the target language.

Acculturation:

Four Stages: 1. Excited to be some place new. 2. Culture shock. 3. Recovery. 4. Accepting place in new culture.

Acculturation

Personality:

1. Risk taking 2. Lack of inhibition 3. Toleration of ambiguity

Characteristics that aid success.

Ethnicity:

{Teachers can increase awareness of others by role play to show the relationships of dominate groups to non-dominate groups.

Bring diversity to the classroom

Teachers:

{Learning a “new” language is as much about understanding a different people as it is learning new vocabulary.

The front line troops in battling inequality!
