MS SOCIETY OF CANADA, SIMCOE COUNTY CHAPTER – July 2013 PAGE 2
Message from the Board Summer is officially here and with that brings exciting upcoming
fundraising events including, the 9th Annual MS Leap of Faith Beach
Volleyball Tournament, the Annual A&W Cruisin’ for a Cause Day and the
Barrie Dragon Boat Festival. Please note that our general email address has
changed to MS.SimcoeCounty@mssociety.ca.
We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all of our wonderful supporters, volunteers
and participants who truly contribute to making each event a success. We strive to create
awareness about multiple sclerosis in our local communities through various fundraising and
education events.
The MS Society of Canada has appeared in the MoneySense Magazine’s review of Canadian
charitable organizations for the fourth year in a row. The review is currently only available
online. This year, the MS Society is listed inaccurately under ‘Hospital Foundations’ category
and the rating is based upon 2011 financial information, because of the timing of the survey.
The MS Society’s key messages are below:
Key Message 1: Every dollar that we raise is invested in people living with MS.
2011 Program Investments:
$9.8 million: research - research grants, scholarships, fellowships, and support of our
endMS Research & Training Network
$10.8 million: client services - including MS clinics, education programs, self-help
groups, recreational and social programs, information and referral services, financial
support for daily living or equipment needs, etc.
$6.9 million: public education and awareness - awareness campaigns, newsletters
$4.0 million: chapter and volunteer support and development - volunteer recruitment
and training, as well as chapter support from division and national offices
$1.7 million: government and community relations - educating all levels of
government about needed changes to benefit people living with MS and assistance to
clients dealing with local transit and accessibility issues.
Key Message 2: We raise much needed funds to remain a leader in driving MS
research in Canada and providing valuable client services including: education
programs, information and referral services, self-help groups and financial support
for daily living or equipment needs to people with MS.
We rely on grassroots events, personal and corporate gifts and the goodwill of Canadians impacted by MS so that we can continually offer financial assistance for mobility equipment and safety devices, support counselling and other programs that
address basic quality of life issues of people living with MS.
Over the past several years, we have experienced an increase in requests for services.
In 2012, over $10.4 million was spent on services for people affected by MS including: education programs, information and referral services, self-help groups,
social and recreation programs and financial support for daily living or equipment needs.
Key Message 3: Without the funds that donors entrust us with, we would not be able to increase our capacity to work with governments to create and improve policies
that will benefit people affected by MS. We work with governments to enhance employment supports and income security for people
with MS, increase caregiver supports, fund patient oriented health research and continue to build sustainable healthcare that is equitable and timely.
We steward every dollar to ensure it has the greatest impact on people living with MS.
In conjunction with our MS awareness campaign in May (1 Day in May), we launched an
online advocacy campaign with a focus on enhancing income security and caregiver support.
Additional information:
We are committed to lowering our cost of fundraising while we continue to provide
programs and services to people with MS and fund MS research. In 2012, our overall
cost of fundraising has gone down from $0.41 to $0.39.
In 2012, our administration expenses remained less than 7 per cent. As one example,
administration costs include things like the phones and computers we use to
communicate with people living with MS.
We invest in staff who are entrusted to deliver much needed services, advance our
government advocacy agenda and lead Canada’s largest MS research program.
With your support, respect and involvement, the Simcoe County Chapter remains committed
to the MS mission. Your input and ideas are important and invaluable. Feel free to contact us
by mail, email or telephone. With your feedback and the efforts of our membership,
volunteers, and community, we can achieve significant growth.
Together we can help support the fight to end MS
In dedication and service,
Board of Directors
MS Society of Canada, Simcoe County Chapter
Mission: To be a leader in finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and

MS Summer Camp (Aug 17-24)
Congratulations to our very own Chapter Youth
Committee Director, Whitney Murray, who has
been accepted to attend the MS Summer Camp
in Calgary this August as a peer support leader.
One of our casual volunteers, Joe Cross, will be
joining Whitney also as a peer support worker.
The MS Summer Camp is very lucky to have
these two volunteers who will be just great
with the children and teens.
There is still time to register for this year’s
MS Summer Camp for youths aged 8-21 who have a diagnosis of MS.
This year, the camp will be held at Easter Seals Camp Horizon outside of Calgary, Alberta near the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The camp is fully accessible and staffed with trained counselors. A wide variety of activities include archery, swimming, river rafting, campfires,
hiking, arts and crafts, nature games, a ropes course, and much more!
Campers are also introduced to peer support leaders who are successful young adults living with MS. This gives campers the opportunity to meet older peers who have followed their dreams despite their MS diagnosis. The camp (and travel) is FREE thanks to the generous
support of the Slaight Family Foundation and Fondation Bergeron-Jetté. A promotional camp video, further information and the registration form can be found at www.mssociety.ca/camp.

Media Alert
Science Translational Medicine: Antigen-Specific Tolerance by Autologous Myelin
Peptide–Coupled Cells: A Phase 1 Trial in Multiple Sclerosis
Northwestern University: Study Shows Positive Results for New MS Therapy
Yahoo Canada: New MS Treatment 'Tricks' Immune System
Summary:
Nine people with relapsing-remitting or secondary-progressive MS participated in the
phase 1 clinical trial. Each patient’s white blood cells were used to deliver myelin
antigens – specific components of myelin that are believed to be attacked in MS –
throughout the body. By doing this the harmful immune cells, which cause further
disease progression, recognize myelin as harmless and develop tolerance to proteins
in the myelin sheath, meaning they no longer attack the myelin sheath.
Two people with MS who showed increased MS disease activity prior to the study
experienced one MS relapse 10 to 16 days after receiving the treatment.
Although the patient numbers are small in this first human study, the safety, feasibility
and early results suggest that this approach may provide a promising avenue for future
trials. The study was not designed to detect the effectiveness of an experimental
treatment.
Key Messages:
The phase 1 clinical trial provides insights into a treatment that focuses on tolerization –
a process by which harmful cells implicated in MS become tolerant to protein
components within myelin and no longer exhibit harmful, self-reactive effects.
The safety, feasibility and early results in the small phase 1 clinical trial suggest that the
tolerization approach may provide a promising new avenue for future clinical treatment
trials. However, the authors note that further, large-scale trials are necessary to
evaluate the safety and efficacy of this treatment for people living with MS.
We look forward to the progress of the investigational treatment approach studied in the
phase 1 clinical trial that will help uncover new therapies for people living with MS.
