PREFACE

。Color。Humanities。Art。Island

Lee,Wo-Shih

From the Magistrate of Kinmen County

Temples, houses of inheritance, residences, historical landmarks, and monumental gateways enrich the island of Kinmen with architectures expressing styles of forms and spaces. These ancient treasures speak the concepts of Five-elements,Five-directions, and Five-colors from the philosophy of Han Dynasty. With such vivid heritage, Kinmen not only is embedded with cultural cultivations but also open to diverse mores. Although she has suffered from warfare through out history, Kinmen nonetheless stands still to the confrontations of military threats with respectful courage and dignity. The conflicts didn’t shadow her beauty. In the contrary, she shines even more with splendid colors and unique characteristics of traditional Chinese people’s legacy. Yet, this culturally enriched land cultivates her people with the quality of conventional Chinese ethnicity of honoring the wisdom of simplicity, honesty, and literature. With mild disposition along with resolute spirits, the people of Kinmen help irrigate this land further to a whole new paradise of culture.

According to historical documentations, Kinmen was the birthplace of many extinguished intellectuals, government officials, and persons of virtue. These outstanding achievements were reflected in the vivid styles of local architectures, such as the designs and decorations on doors, arches, altars, windows, columns and so on. These brilliant elements are turned to symbols that indicate luck, prosperity, wellbeing, and success that their ancestors had accomplished. The calligraphy carved on the tablet hung in the front of the ancestral shrine was delicately composed with specific meanings, decorations, and forms. In terms of color applications, the blue Chinese characters on golden tablet, or golden characters on black one represents the imperial honors on academic achievements. According to the concept of Five-elements, the color of blue indicates wood, meaning east, spring, brightness, and sky. In addition, the color of gold represents firmness. There are also tablets with golden characters on green background specifies the great attainments of the ancestors that have become the lasting honors that the families hold and follow.

The conventional appearances of the Goddess of Ma-Zhu wearing in yellow and the God of Guan-Gon in green are all derived from the daily customs, concepts of things and the points of view on nature, lives, and religions. In addition, the lion statue in red scarf often seen in the island has developed new meanings in the twenty-first century. The exhibitor, Ms. Hsieh, Lan-fen, has created her poster design works by first studying the new meanings of colors seen and applied in the daily lives in modern Kinmen. Through the process of transforming these visual representations of Kinmen into graphic design elements, Ms. Hsieh has brought us a wonderful collection of art works celebrating the fabulous colors of the spanking island.
