Hiding mountain of truth with bushesof lies: Naqvi on anti-CAA protests

MUMBAI, Dec 28:

Union Minister MukhtarAbbas Naqvi today said that thoseopposing the Citizenship(Amendment) Act and NationalRegister of Citizens were trying tohide a "mountain of truth withbushes of lies".

Addressing a press conferencehere as part of the BJP's awarenesscampaign over the contentiousCAA and NRC, he also said thatMuslims were not living in Indiaout of "compulsion" but due totheir "commitment to national-ism".

"Some people with narrowpolitical interests are spreadingdisinformation among a particularsection of society on the CAA,NRC and National PopulationRegister and trying to hide amountain of truth with bushes oflies," he said.

There is no threat to the citi-zenship of any Indian Muslimfrom the CAA, NRC or any otherlaw, he said.

"The Narendra ModiGovernment is working towardsdevelopment without discrimina-

tion," the Union minister forminority affairs said.

Prime Minister Modi has madeit clear that CAAwas brought in togive citizenship (to persecutedminorities from Pakistan,Bangladesh and Afghanistan) andnot take it away from existing citi-zens, Naqvi said.

The NRC conducted in Assamwas limited to that State, and theexercise would not pose any threatto Indian Muslims, he said.

Muslims from other countriescould obtain citizenship under theCitizenship Act even before theamendment, he said.

While Pakistan is "hell forminorities, India is heaven", hesaid, adding that this reality wasunacceptable to "divisive forcesout to weaken the country".

Asked about a police official inMeerut in Uttar Pradesh reported-ly asking anti-CAA protesters to"go to Pakistan", Naqvi said actionshould be taken against the officialif it was found to be true.

On a question on RSS chiefMohan Bhagwat calling all 130crore Indians as "Hindus", theminister said, "when two lakh(Indian) people go for Haj, theyare called Hindi". (PTI)

Chidambaram says Army chief should ‘mind his business’

THIRUVANATHAPURAM/HYDERABAD, Dec 28:

Army Chief Bipin Rawattoday received more flak fromopposition parties for criticisingpeople leading protests againstthe Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA), with senior Congressleader P Chidambaram saying itis not the business of the Army totell politicians what they shoulddo and the General should “mindhis business.”

Attacking Rawat over hisremarks, CPI (M) general secre-tary Sitaram Yechury said it waspoliticisation of the armed forcesand warned that if the “dangeroustrend” continues it will be “like

the role of Army in Pakistan”.They were reacting to

Rawat’s remarks made at a healthsummit on Thursday.

“Leaders are not those wholead people in inappropriatedirections, as we are witnessingin a large number of universityand college students, the waythey are leading masses ofcrowds to carry out arson andviolence in our cities and towns. This is not leadership,” the ArmyChief had said.

After Rawat’s remarks trig-gered a storm, Army had issued aclarification, saying the ArmyChief has not referred to theCAA.

“He has not referred to anypolitical event, personality. Hewas addressing the future citizensof India who are students. (It ishis) righteous duty to guide stu-dents on whom shall depend thefuture of the Nation. In Kashmirvalley, youths were misguidedthe first, by people whom theytrusted as leaders,” the Armystatement said.

However, Chidambaram wascritical of Rawat’s remarks.

“Now, the Army General isbeing asked to speak up. Is it thejob of the Army General? TheDGP... The Army General arebeing asked to support the gov-ernment. It is a shame. Let meappeal to General Rawat.... Youhead the Army and mind yourbusiness... What politicians willdo, politicians will do,” the for-mer union minister said.

“It is not the business of theArmy to tell politicians what weshould do. Just as it is not ourbusiness to tell you how to fighta war. You fight war accordingto your ideas and we will man-age the politics of the country,”he said.

He was speaking at a rallyagainst the new Act organisedby Kerala Pradesh CongressCommittee (KPCC) in front ofRaj Bhavan in Thiruvanant-hapuram.

Taking strong exception toRawat’s comments on “domesticpolitics”, Yechury said that ithad happened “for the first timein independent India”. (PTI)
