Child Vaccination Program For Under-5 Children

Immunization is a process of making a person immune or resistant to any infectious disease. The process is typically done with the administration of a vaccine. As vaccines can stimulate the body’s own immune system, the person gets protection against all subsequent infections or diseases. The vaccines are given for vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs).

Immunization:

Immunization has proved to be one of the most effective public health interventions for protection of children who are under 5 years of age, especially. The protection is basically against the life threatening conditions which can be considered as preventable if diagnosed timely.

The major focus of the MoHFW and UIP is to achieve a great reduction in the child mortality and morbidity rate in India, by providing vaccines of the all the preventable diseases to each district and state in the country. Majorly, the efforts are made for all the children, under child vaccination program in India, and for the mothers and pregnant women.

Why is the disease called lockjaw?

In this disease, the muscle spasms in the face and further, neck will lead to the inability for the mouth to open. This is one of the most common symptoms of tetanus and that’s why the disease is called lockjaw.

According to CES 2009, around 61% of India’s birth cohort which is about 26 million (largest in the world) are fully immunized. In India, the under-5 child mortality rate has been reduced from ~233 to ~63 (per 1000) in the last five decades. However, it has been reported that vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) are still very much responsible for over 5 lakh deaths (annually) in India where routine immunization program in India is seriously lacking behind.
