Significance of theproblemChildhood obesity iscomplex and rapidly growingglobal healthproblemgreatly affecting thepopulation ofMexico, can havenumerousadversehealtheffects, andcontributestoincreased chronicdiseases in adulthood (WHO, 2016).

33%of childrenintheUnited Statesareobese (AmericanHeart Association, 2014).

Hispanics makeup 12%of thepopulation inJacksonCounty, Oregon (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014)

In2012, thechildhood obesity prevalence inMexicanchildrenages 11-19 was34.9%, rankingMexicoasnumberone in childhood obesity (Instituto Nacional deSalud Publica, 2012)

Recommendations• Continue current school effortsof education to

childrenand families, increasingwaterconsumption andbanning sodas

• Educate that childrenages9-19 shouldconsume daily portionsasfollows: 4-5 vegetables, 2-5 fruits, 10-12 grains, 1-2 legumes,4-5 animal proteinsand 1-2 servingsofdairy(Mexican Secretaria deSalud, 2016).

• Local andstatewidecampaignstodecreaseconsumption of packagedproductsand sugarydrinksandtoconsume abalanced dietmust beemphasized.

• Connect familiesof school children toexistingcommunity resources

• Rationale: School-basedinterventionsincluding teacher education, supportiveenvironments,nutritioncurriculum, physicaleducation andparental nutritionclassesresultsareeffective indecreasing BMIs andimproving eating behaviors (Barcardi-Gascon et . al., 2012)

Conclusions• Puentecillas isactively utilizing anecological

model totarget childhoodobesity

• FifthgradeBMIdata showsobesity andoverweight isstill anissue indicating theinfluence of culture, food availability, andupstreamstructural determinantsonthisnational populationhealthepidemic.

• Next steps: evaluatecultural barriersandareasfor policy change,parent’s learning stylesandefficacy of classesbeing offered.
