Reading books about China such as: A History of Chinese Civilization (Jacques Gernet, 1982) and China: A New History (John King Fairbank, 1992).

Reading articles like: “Inflation Up in China on Lunar New Year Spending” (New York Times, Feburary 9, 2012).

China celebrates many holidays that America does such as New Year's Day, Labor Day, and National Day, but China still celebrates many of the traditional Chinese holidays as well.

The Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is considered to be the most important holiday in China and is celebrated throughout the entire nation.

The Lantern Festival, The Mid-Autumn Festival, and The Winter Solstice Festival are all very important and widely celebrated days in the Chinese culture.

Education is required for children ages 6-15. Parents have to pay a small fee for the student’s books and uniforms.

Classes average 35 students.

Students are required to attend school 6 days a week. School starts at around 7am and lasts until at least 4pm (most of the time later). Saturdays only have morning classes in Math and Science.

The 3 main types of Chinese traditional clothing are: the pien-fu, the ch'ang-p'ao, and the shen-i.

Pien-fu is an ancient type of Chinese dress worn at ceremonial events by both men and women. It has two pieces: a tunic-like top that comes to the knees and a skirt that reaches the ankles.

The Ch'ang-p'ao or long robe is a one-piece garment that reaches from the shoulders down to the heels. It is a traditional dress for women and is often made in silky fabrics with elaborate embroidery.

The shen-i type of clothing is a combination of the pien-fu and the ch'ang-pao. The shen-i has a tunic and a skirt or trousers, but the tunic and the skirt are sewn together and thus become one piece like the ch'ang-pao. The shen-i style is the most common style worn.

Ping Pang Qiu (ping pong) is a very popular sport in China. Others include, chess, cricket, basketball, baseball, and badminton.

Dragon boat racing dates back about 2500 years and remains a traditional event held every year in China.

China is known as the People’s Republic.

China is a communist party-led state.

China started building the Great Wall in the Seventh Century BC for protection of their borders from other small countries.

For over 2,000 years the Great Wall was extended, modified and rebuilt.

The great Wall is over 3,700 miles long!!!!
