The image Stained glass showing a crowned
lion from the east window in the Weston Room
at the Maughan Library in Chancery
Lane, London WC2. This room stands
on the site of the former estate of the
Masters of the Rolls, and fragments
of mediaeval glass from their chapel
were incorporated into the windows of this part
of the building when it was reconstructed in 1898
as part of the Public Record Office Building.
King’s College London took over the building,
known as ‘the Strong-box of the Empire’, in the
1990s. The College cleaned and restored the
glass as part of its award-winning conversion
of the building into a library for the
Schools of its Strand Campus, which
was officially opened by Her Majesty
the Queen in 2002. The room also
houses three monuments to Masters
of the Rolls, of which the most important is in
terracotta by Pietro Torrigiano and dates from
the early sixteenth century, as well as a fine
late-Victorian mosaic floor, discovered during
the restoration work.
