DESCRIPTION

Wicked problems in China, workshop with design students from Tongji University at Design Factory, Sanghai

TRANSCRIPT

Civil service seen as golden rice bowl

According to state media, 133 million candidates had entered

their names for the contest, although only 97 million actually

took the written exams. This means each job vacancy is being

chased by 54 candidates. The hottest one is 4124:1. Those who

pass the first written exams will have to take more tests, such as

oral exams, special skill exams and background checks.

While the nominal starting salary for a low-ranking civil-service

job may not be much, there are various benefits, such as free

medical care and a lifetime retirement stipend. In addition, there

are always the expectations of raises and promotions - not to

mention reaping "gray income" through the power that comes

with civil-service jobs. It is no wonder that such a job is seen by

university graduates as a "golden rice bowl".
