“Bimodal IT” posits that IT organizations of the future will have two separate
flavors: Type 1 is traditional IT, focused on stability and efficiency, while Type 2 is
an experimental, agile organization focused on time-to-market, rapid application
evolution, and, in particular, tight alignment with business units.

Dorado 4300 / 6300 / 8300 Availability
• Good - Single instruction processing module – Very infrequent failure (5 years MTBS), but
– Persistent failure may result in outage for hours for repair and recovery
• Better - HA configuration provides standby hardware to reboot quickly. Decision to failover is a human decision. Future development will optionally allow the management server S/W to decide– Automate the failover process once the decision has been made
– Small number of minutes to recover
• Best - XPC-L clustering – Multi-server for performance
– Multi-server for highest availability, near non-stop(database software versions must be the same on all servers)

Dorado 4300 / 6300 / 8300 High Availability
• Active and Standby PMMs comprise an HA configuration
• Standby PMM is in a “warm” state, dedicated to providing high availability.
• Each PMM in partition shares the PSIOPs that provide connection to mass storage.
• Failover control by user, via simple one-button command
• Reduces failover time and increases failover automation to meet or exceed processes typically performed on a partitioned Dorado CMOS system.
• Each partition of a two partition system can be configured as HA.

Dorado OS 2200 Systems Today – Summary
• Assembled by Unisys supply chain
• Hardware components specified and tested by engineering and assembled following guidelines defined by engineering
• For Intel based Dorado systems, a layer of “firmware” generally referred to in engineering as “System Architecture Interface Layer (SAIL)” has been developed by Unisys engineering and is installed by Unisys supply chain, to enable the specified Intel based system to take on the personality of a Dorado system
• When this system is installed at a customer site, the OS 2200 system software, provided by Unisys and partners, is installed on the system
• This allows the system to connect to existing storage peripherals containing OS 2200 file systems and programs, and execute and operate on those files and program without change

OS 2200 Software Series – Summary
• Intent of OS 2200 Series is to support deployment of this entire software execution stack in a more flexible manner
– Varying hardware platforms chosen by clients but meeting minimum specifications identified by Unisys engineering
– Various Cloud and virtualization environments
– Without the requirement for supply chain assembly
– Majority of the installation occurring on site by the client or Unisys services
– This will occur in a set of phases, over a period of several years, with increasing levels of capability, performance, automation, and availability / reliability, in each subsequent release
