CLOSET LAUNDRY PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS

Is it rightfor your closet?First, determine if yourcloset is large enough to accommodate the washer and dryer. Adding electricity andplumbing typically involves hiring anelectrician and a plumber. Choose a spaceadjacent to an existingbath to save money andtime on the installation.

ADEQUATE SPACELook for a dryer approved for installation in a compact space like an alcove or closet. Most installations require aminimum 5-inch clearancebehind the dryer for anexhaust vent with an elbow.

VENTINGMost dryers need a vent tothe outdoors (not into a wall, attic, or crawl space). Ventless dryers collectmoisture into a pan that must be emptied regularly.

GAS OR ELECTRICMost compact dryer unitsare electric, but a gas dryer will likely reduce drying time. For gas models, you’ll needa gas line—contact a utility company to install one. Otherwise, go electric. If your closet is 36 inches deep, a standard-size dryer should t the space.

POWER SUPPLYProperly grounded three-prong receptacles should bewithin reach of the appliance power supply cord. Hire a licensed electrician to add this or ensure the existingsupply meets your needs.

WATERHot and cold water-supply lines, as well as a drain, must feed into the closet. To prevent damaging leaks, choose tear-resistant braided steel hoses. Install a recessed washer box to avoid crimped water lines.
