PRESSOE'S RAMBLES Good month to you all. By now everyone’s cars should be sorted and polished ready for some fantastic summer outings that are planned. Good to see some of the newer members out and about on the runs and getting involved with the club. Last month, we had some great activities that were attended by a lot of club members. At Mt Tarrengower hill climb there were six of us who participated in the dash up the hill and as a club did very well with Neale Wust taking the trophy, for best presented car.

Rod Thomson winning his class again and handling the new chicane with ease. If you haven’t had a go at this hill, I would recommend that you do it as it is very challenging and you will have a great time and meet some fantastic people. Then it was time to run the annual Rally and this took us down to Warburton for the night, on those beautiful roads through the Yarra Valley and listening to the melodic tunes of a Bridgeport rotary RX7.

I have launched a full investigation* into how Gaye and myself managed to win this even t and well done to Chris and Sandy on coming 3rd in their first rally. Well done to the organizers Kath and Brendan and Damien and Annette for running the weekend so well, maybe a little bit too well. Hope you all are well and will see you at our next monthly meeting. We were delighted to have 10 cars and 16 fellow car enthusiasts arrive for a drive on a very overcast day. We got a nice surprise to have Col and Jenny arrive in a beautiful new red Holden Commodore SS Redline - Col’s broad smile told the story.

Interesting Roads

We headed through Strathfieldsaye , Axe Creek, Emu Creek, by the side of Mt Alexander, along some twisty roads to Golden Point where we were joined by Noel and Lyn Roberts. On reaching Chewton, we wound our way back to Harcourt, past vineyards and rolling hills, which are lovely and green at present. After we turned into Springs Rd., on a bend were two large dogs wandering loose. We all proceeded without any incidents - good driving

everyone.

At Bradies Tavern, our destination, we enjoyed a delicious 2 course meal, thanks Brenton.

Gayle and Ern Jenkin's daughter joined us with her baby boy Brooks and proud Dad Brenton What a beautiful baby and proud grandparents, they are. It made us feel good and we finished our drive on a lovely note. Thank you all for coming Thanks to Bruce and Janie Tonkin.

The Leader's STEALH BOMBER!

It was a great day for a cruise around some of the roads I terrorised as a young gun. In-fact on one of those roads, I rolled a car. There was a great line up of like-minded enthusiasts. Orders were given that all members had to be in their cars and ready to go, engines running before we left the car park. This worked and the group stayed together well. We progress into town, left at the fountain and out to Spring Gully. From there we crossed to Diamond Hill Road and creatively progressed back to Sedgwick Road, continuing to the other end of Rodger's mountain which we did in reverse. Lots of stiff necks no doubt, and seamed a lot further going that way.

Ken Beale - Tribute.

We saw the sad loss of our esteemed member and past President Ken Beale, on the 3rd October. I know Kathie, Andrew and Chris were very moved by the show of support by Ken's many Family and Friends and in particular, from members of the BSCCC at Ken's funeral. Ken, my Brother-in-Law and I go back nearly fifty years, and I can honestly say that I am really going to miss his mateship, as I know many of you will. He had a heart transplant on the 6th of February and was doing real well, apart from a few setbacks. In May, he was out of Hospital, walking and eating and things were looking real good. Then he started getting infections, one after another and he just couldn't get on top of them and finally there was no energy or strength left to fight them, and he had had enough. Ken has left a great legacy and wonderful memories. There is a Masonic saying, "Live respected and die regretted." Ken has done just that. Roger Huthnance.

Vinyl Clean / Shine

I was given some useful information, re a widely used, recognised and promoted product, that makes the vinyl in your car, look great. From discussion, I understand that much this person's business is dash repairs, caused by this product - which he described as causing a cancer, in the vinyl. Because it is silicone-based, it eventually penetrates the vinyl, therefore eating into the dashboard. I have discarded this product and recently did a detail clean on my car, just using warm water and a microfibre cloth. Of course, the lustre was less so, but nevertheless, quite tidy. It was suggested that warm water and wool wash, could be used as a clean - FYI.

Seeking your contributions to “Memory Lane” I am sure there are heaps of car photos, experiences and memories, that need to be dusted off, shared and enjoyed, among our members. Just send me pictures of your past cars - good, bad and indifferent, restorations, bad buys, divorce material, you name it! - with a précis . The quality is not so important - as I can perhaps improve them, with editing. Anyway, nostalgia - has its imperfections. If you need photos scanned, bring them along, with some info. Another Car Maker - from Vietnam Vietnam now proposes to be a car manufacturer in their own right, with their new marque, VINFAST.

On October 9, 2018, VinFast Limited was granted a $ 950 million loan from Euler Hermes, an export credit agency under the German government, to import machinery, for production.

The first two products from the newly established car company include a mid-size sedan

and SUV, that were presented at the recent 2018 Paris auto show. Rather than develop its

own models, Vinfast has chosen to rebody existing cars for its first two products - based on

the previous-generation BMW 5-Series and X5.

Starting with Italdesign’s winning concepts, the cars’ designs were then further developed

and completed by Pininfarina, working closely with Vinfast design.

One powertrain will be available at launch - a BMW-designed 2.0-litre turbocharged four,

that will be built under license.

Vinfast quotes a 0-62 mph time of 7.1 seconds for the Lux A2.0 and a time of 7.3 seconds for

the Lux SA RWD.

Do We Need Another Car Maker?

Maybe, like having a national airline - it's partly a matter of national prestige, technology transfer and employment. Surely, there is a worldwide over -capacity of auto production - not to mention the potential tectonic changes coming in the motor industry: hybrid and electric cars, autonomous driving, on-call cars, via your phone - does raise some questions of the long term viability of the current industry, not to mention the numerous emerging brands, from China. Owning a car will become optional to many people, thus reducing demand. There will be less cars sitting around, idle for hours on end. Interestingly, redundant engineers, from Ford, Holden and Toyota, have been involved in the development of these models. In the future, there will be a major challenges to the industry, including suppliers - many of those parts that make an internal combustion engine, will disappear. Amalgamations will

occur and some brands will disappear. Governments will lose petrol excise/taxes and will require new sources of revenue. Additionally, gearboxes will be simplified or eliminated, drive shafts, out. Maybe, even conventional braking systems, and wiring looms may be simplified, etc. etc. there will be a major disruption (and opportunities) in the automotive supply industry. Already, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Nissan, Audi and Hyundai have pure electric vehicles for release and DYSON plans to build EVs in Singapore in 2020, There are plans for 21charging sites from Adelaide to Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane by Chargefox - delivering 400kms in 15 minutes. Ultimately, millions of fossil fuel vehicles, will be crushed OR in some cases - become objects d 'art. China currently, has over 2 million EV/hybrid cars on the road. Questions:

where will all the required electricity come from.

how environmentally sound is the production and disposal of lithium batteries.

So, in the interim, let’s enjoy our internal combustion steeds, their characteristics, especially, the endeavour, technical achievements, their huge stimulus to economic and engineering activity, their contribution to prosperity, conferred mobility and enjoyment, not to mention their considerable and magnificent histories. It is a great collection of classic cars, which head from Melbourne to Langwarren,

where the cars will be on display for the general public. Cruden Farm consists of a mansion home and stunning gardens.

All gate money collected from the general public goes to the Peter Mac Foundation. The day’s event for BSCCC members will commence at 6:30am at Kangaroo Flat and then proceed to the start of the rally at the Deaf Foundation at 597 St Kilda Rd.
