Marcin WerlaPoznań Supercomputing and Networking Center

Long-term preservationor long-term access?

• Access to digital resources shouldnot be treated as one time activity

– Get funding

– Digitize and describe objects

– Make a website

– Finish the project / end of funding

– Maintain in „Works? Don’t touch it!” mode

Project

Organized set of human activities, aimed on achieving defined result, limited in defined period of time,

with specific beginning and ending, usually done by a team,

using defined amount of resources.

Example: museum digitization project, where the result is to start a website with 50 000 objects,

before the end of 2017.

Service

undertaken by ones,aimed on

delivering specific values/benefits to others.

Our challenge

• All digital library components generate costs

• In smaller institutions there may be no proper hard IT infrastructure to reuse for a digital library

• Apart from costs - lack of expertiseto cope with IT infrastructure

• How to simplify deploymentand reduce the cost of having a digital library without limiting its value for end users?
