Warmly remembered moments from radio’s golden past will come back to you as you listen to the rich gleaning of song and comedy that makes up this album. Wide and varied though the selections are, some¬ body’s favorite is bound to have been left out, for the world of radio in the Thirties and Forties was a world brimming with unique and well¬ loved personalities. Nonetheless, a glance at the table of contents will prove that twelve of the greatest among the greats are represented in performances of some of their most characteristic material.
Back in the decades before television, much of daytime radio was given over to those fifteen-minute segments of harrowing heartache known affectionately as “soap operas.” But at night, listeners across the land were treated to a wide variety of programs. Week after week Bing Crosby’s warbling baritone filled the living rooms of the nation, as did the higher, nasal tenor of Rudy Vallee, the darling of the college kids of the Flapper Age. The country-bred wisdom of Will Rogers, the mischievous, side-of-the-mouth comments of W. C. Fields, the scatter-brained antics of Gracie Allen, the untiring high spirits and warm-hearted humor of Eddie Cantor, the inimitable (though often imitated) singing of A1 Jolson, the voice of Kate Smith, as big and generous as her heart—these are some of the figures who used the airwaves to write their names indelibly into the memories of millions of Americans.
We once again hear and thrill to the voices of these and other stars of radio’s great yesteryear. Those who lived through that era will find this album a precious souvenir and a delightful experience. And those of the younger generation will have a rare chance to discover why their parents still keep that old mahogany-veneered radio among other cherished mementos of a vanished age.
