Combustion Reactions By: Glizyl Luna

What are the different types of chemical reactions?

● Combustion● Synthesis● Decomposition● Single displacement● Double displacement● Acid-Base

What is a combustion reaction? A combustion reaction

takes place when a fuel and an oxidant react, producing heat or heat and light.

What is the fire triangle?● The fire triangle

what produces the fire which is first oxygen, then heat, then the fuel and the chemical, exothermic reaction that is the fire.

What is activation energy?

● It is the amount of energy needed to start the reaction.

Why is heat/energy a necessary part of the triangle?

● Without sufficient heat a fire cannot begin.

● Without the three things: heat, oxygen and fuel, the fire won't begin.

How is the cook top of you stove a real life example of a fire

triangle?● The stove use

oxygen, heat, and fuel to cook food on the stove.

What is a combustion engine?● It is an engine in which the

combustion of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer in a combustion chamber.

● The expansion of the high temperature and pressure gases, produced by the combustion, applies force to a moveable component of the engine such as pistons or turbine blades by moving it over a distance.

How does a combustion engine work?

● It is a motion from gasoline is to burn the gasoline inside an engine.

How are NASCAR engines different from street cars?

● The NASCAR engines have more combustion because they go at higher speeds.

● The street cars have a smaller engine because they don't need as much fuel as a NASCAR because their not going at high speeds.

How does nitrous oxide help engines perform better?

● When you heat nitrous oxide to about 570 degrees F, it splits into oxygen and nitrogen. So the injection of nitrous oxide into an engine means that more oxygen is available during combustion.

● More oxygen, more fuel, allowing the engine to produce more power.

Documented example of cheating in NASCARAfter the race the roof of Jimmie Johnson's car was too low. That reduced aerodynamic drag and lower center of gravity is an obvious performance benefit. Behind him second place finisher, and teammate, Kyle Busch's car was found to have quarter-panel heights that were too high, again and aerodynamic advantage. When the penalties were handed down on Tuesday following the race NASCAR did lay out some stiff penalties, but not stiff enough. Jimmie Johnson lost 25 driver points, 25 car owner points and a $35,000 fine. His crew chief was suspended for two races. Kyle Busch face a similar penalty, 25 points for both driver and car owner, tow race suspension for his crew chief and a $25,000 fine. Effectively Jimmie Johnson was assigned third place points and allowed to keep the lion's share of the money.
