Looking for serious on-the-job writing experience

while simultaneously benefiting the environment?

Apply to be a Communications Intern with Appalachian Voices, a regional

environmental non-profit organization based in Boone. Openings include

editorial, marketing, graphic design and web design positions.

Our Communications Interns gain hands-on, intensive writing and

communications experience through numerous outlets including the

organization’s semi-monthly regional newspaper The Appalachian Voice, the weekly Front

Porch Blog, our monthly e-newsletter The Advocate, promotional materials, social networking,

and a monthly page in The Mountain Times newspaper. Internships are often tailored to meet

the student’s overall goals and career objectives.

Interns will keep up-to-date with news and current events relating to Appalachia and the

environment. Subjects of focus include mountaintop removal coal mining, air pollution,

forestry, land stewardship and water issues, as well as Appalachian culture, outdoor

adventure and naturalist topics.

Qualifications should include:

• Excellent research, communication and organizational skills

• Interest in environmental issues and Appalachian culture

• Detail-oriented• Ability to meet deadlines and work well in a fast-paced office

• Knowledge of journalistic writing and online/blog writing

• Competence with word processing, spreadsheet and online blogging tools

• Interest in journalism and/or non-profit communications work

• Knowledgeable with social networking tools such as Twitter and Facebook

• Familiarity with Adobe products, HTML code and AP style a plus

• Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision

• A well-developed sense of humor
