Cool Tools Calibrated Bezel Template Instructions This document is a general instruction on how to use our bezel templates. To learn more about these templates and applications for bezeled gemstones, check out both of our videos, Art Nouveau Pendant by Lisel Crowley and Calibrated Bezel Templates in Metal Clay.

BezelTemplate

• Matchyourstonetothestonesize(left).Thisholewillbeusedforthefirstcutwhichisalsotheinsideseatforyourgemstone.

• Chooseyourdesiredbezelwallthickness(right).Thiscutwillbetheoutsidewallofthebezel.

1. Placeyourgemstoneonyourworksurface.Withtheculetsideup,determinethedepthofthebezelrequired.Stackourrollingframesuntiltheyarethesameheightofthegemstone.Usethesnakerollertoverify.Ifthesnakerollertouchesthestone,addmorerollingframes.

2. Placealumpoffreshmetalclayontheworksurface.Usingthesnakeroller,pressdownontotheclay

creatingpancake.

3. Choosethetemplatethatmatchesyourgemstoneinbothsizeandshape.

4. Usingthestonesizeofthetemplate,placethetemplateontheslabofclay,pressdownslightly.Cutandremovetheclayfromthetemplate.Itisimportanttoholdtheultraclaypickatananglethatroughlymatchestheangleoftheculet.Thiswillkeepthegemstonefromfallingthroughthebackofthebezel.

5. Refinetheangleandremoveanyadditionalexcessclay.

6. Placeyourgemstoneintotheopening.

7. Usingthesnakerollerpressdownonthegemstonetoseatitintotheclay.Itisagoodideatobrushtheclaywithwateratthispointtohelptheclaystaymoist.Thispreventspossiblecrackingofthemetalclay.

8. Removetherollingframes.Usingthetemplate,choosethewallthicknessyoudesireforthespecificgemstoneyouareusing.Centerthetemplatearoundthestoneandpressdownslightly.

9. Holdingthetemplatefirmlyontheclay,cuttheoutsidebezelwallwithyourclaypick.Makethiscut,straightupanddownorperpendicular.

10. Removetheexcessclay.

11. Allowtodryandthenrefine.Yourbezeledgemstoneisnowreadytobefiredorcanbeaddedtoyournextproject.
