et against the backdrop of two devastating wars that engulfed the world, the music of 'Grant us Peace' explores the deeply personal sorrow produced by human conflict and the longing and hope for a promised peace. Henryk Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs evokes a mother’s lament over the loss of a son, punctuated by a young girl’s prayer for her weeping mother. Taking as its

texts the poetry of the fifteenth century monastery, the twentieth century concentration camp and the war-scarred Polish countryside, the symphony ends in a quiet, radiant expression of hope in a peace that can only be found in a world beyond.

At times hauntingly ethereal, jarringly dissonant and grandly martial, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem weaves poetry by Walt Whitman and other sources into a wrenchingly honest examination of the effect of warfare on common life and human relation-ships. In the end, however, the drumbeat of the battlefield is overwritten in a flowing reminder of biblical promise and in praise to the God of heavenly peace.

Together, these two great works remind us that, though the readiness to make war is a sad and shameful hallmark of human nature, the whole truth about humankind includes a divine promise of everlasting peace. They enable us to understand and speak about war in terms not merely political, they teach us how to grieve with those who grieve and mourn with those who mourn and, above all, they bestow on us the transcendent blessing of hope.

Irving Chorale and Plymouth Park Methodist Present Mozart's Requiem The Chancel Choir of Plymouth Park United Methodist Church and the Irving Chorale will be joining together to perform W.A. Mozart's masterpiece Requiem on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of PPUMC. This historic piece will be presented as a service of worship in honor of All Saint's Day. The performance will also commemorate the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth in 1756. The combined chorus will be accompanied by full chamber orchestra and or-gan, with talented singers from within the chorus participating as soloists. The Requiem is one of Mozart's finest and most-recognized works. It was begun commissioned in July of 1791, and re-mained incomplete at the time of Mozart's death on December 8, 1791. Many legends and myths are associated with the Requiem's composition, including Mozart's belief that he was composing the work for his own funeral. This is highly doubt-ful, as Mozart's letters describe him as being in fair health until only a few weeks before his death, allowing him to complete several other pressing projects of the time, including his opera The Magic Flute. When illness did befall him, it did take him quickly. Mozart was confined to his bed on November 20, 1791, and died a little over two weeks later of what is believed to have been acute rheumatic fever. Mozart was 35. We will never know all the details surrounding the mysterious circumstances contributing to the composition of the Requiem, but what we do have is a colossal work that has for centuries been a monument to those who have gone before us. It is the hope of the PPUMC Chancel Choir and the Irving Chorale that this performance be a fitting tribute to the deceased. maining seats will be up for grabs, so if you want to keep your good seats from last season, now's the time to renew! Don't

worry if you aren't sure about your schedule yet, as ticket exchanges are free throughout the season subscription drive end-

ing January 31, 2007.

The Living Opera's 2007 season will take place at the Plaza Theater in Garland for the March and April shows, and at the

Countrywide Theater at the Eisemann Center in Richardson for the June and July productions. These are small, intimate

theaters with limited seating, so if you want to get the best seats, you need to subscribe soon! In 2006, 3 of 8 performances

were completely sold out and the rest were all at 85%-95% capacity!

Fine Arts Chamber Players (FACP) opens its 26th Season of the free Bancroft Family Concerts series at the Dallas Museum

of Art on Saturday, October 28th at 3:00 p.m. in Horchow Auditorium. The Dallas Museum of Art is located at 1717 North

So named because its musicians all have October birthdays, The October Trio members are Susan Dedrich-Pejovich - Prin-

cipal Harp of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Mary Karen Clardy - Professor of Flute at the University of North Texas and

Barbara Sudweeks - Interim Principal Viola of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

In memory of Charles Barr, bassist with the Cleveland Orchestra and son of Dallas oboists Eric and Catherine Barr, the pro-

gram will open with Variation for Harp and Bass from Alberto Ginastera's Variaciones Concertantes, Op. 23 (1953) featuring

guest bassist, Nicolas Tsolainas, Principal Bass of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

The October Trio will perform Garten von Freuden und Traurigkeiten by Sofia Gubaidulina for flute, viola and harp, Duo by

François Devienne for flute and viola, the World Premiere of Trio by Justin Writer, The Garden of Adonis by Alan Hovhaness

for flute and harp, and Le Soleil Multicolore by Jacques Bondon.

The Bancroft Family Concerts series is made possible by Sue and Christopher Bancroft. FACP’s October 28th concert is

sponsored by Neiman Marcus. Season sponsors include The Arts District Foundation, TACA, the City of Dallas Office of

For over a quarter of a century, FACP has presented free chamber music programs for the enrichment of North Texas area

residents. Concerts annually showcase over fifty outstanding Metroplex professional musicians drawn from the Dallas Sym-

phony Orchestra, The Dallas Opera Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony, and faculties of leading area music schools. In

addition to the free Bancroft Family Concerts, FACP presents the free Basically Beethoven Festival in July. Each year,

FACP’s educational outreach programs, Dream Collectors and Community Classics, provide over 200 free events in area

Tuzer Ballet presents the 22nd annual Nutcracker

Richardson, TX – TUZER BALLET, under the artistic direction of Tanju and Patricia Tuzer, presents their 22nd annual beloved holiday masterpiece “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, December 23rd at 2 pm and 8 pm and Sunday, Decem-ber 24th at 2 pm, at Charles W. Returning as the delightful Sugarplum Fairy will be guest artist Pollyanna Ribeiro and as her partner, Christopher Budzynski both formerly of the Boston Ballet. What is Cooperative Arts News?

The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list members with news of member organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest. The Rules: 1) Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return. Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future notifications by e-mailing the list manager. 2) In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any unwanted "Spamming", all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that need to go out, they may be grouped together in "digest" format to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to the list. If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely manner.
